  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upset about not having the fixed 2/3" Scarlet??

I know you tried, Jim. It's just hard to be in the right spot between "everything changes" and "trust us." I loved the idea of the fixes scarlet as an entry point to the Red world, to high resolution and high framerates. You are certainly right about 4k being the future. But 3k would have been my perfect training ground. I hope one day I'll be able to be part of the true redusers.

4K is NOW....Future is ....

Is that the Vegan Burger where they use lettuce instead of a bun? No, a good burger or sandwich always starts with the bread. Warm, soft slightly greasy bun . . . mmmmmm
No it is not vegan,it is a burger with the lettuce some kind of a lettuce wrap burger :)

I cannot wait until our Scarlet arrives. This is our first Red purchase and we've been wanting to buy a camera from you guys for a long time. This is also our first real digital cinema camera (funny how that works...). I love film, but there's no question that digital opens up a ton of creative options that just aren't practical with film. (Just as I would argue film still has some qualities that are hard for digital to replicate properly. Not necessarily things that are better, just things that are different and are worthwhile in certain circumstances.)

Yup, lettuce instead of bun. Yuk. Give me my warm, soft bun. Cold wet lettuce just don't git 'er done. Speaking of cold - heading to fridge for a Stone IPA then off to bed. Awesome day RED TEAM!!

I love protein-style! Such a nice balance of nutrients from a health point-of-view and it's a really tasty burger. Somehow it's both filling and... not quite sure how to put this... refreshing? Odd to call a burger that.

Anyway, I miss In-N-Out so much and I am jealous that you guys can get it whenever you want to.

An interchangeable Scarlet 3K 2/3 version would have been the perfect run'n'gun rig... Too bad.

There's a difference between not being able to satisfy everyone... and telling everyone you're going to release a cheap 3K option for 3-4 years, only to replace it by a higher costing model at the very end.
Even though this model is still miles ahead of the competition, it still kind of feels like a bait-and-switch action.

Sorry you feel that way. The delays in development exposed the fact that 3K is not future-proof. And we make cameras for professionals. or those that aspire to be professionals. We had a hard time justifying a 3K professional camera. The fact that the 8X fixed zoom had a fatal flaw (couldn't hold focus from wide to tele)... was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I think Scarlet is now too close to Epic.
I wish Red's next design would be "Scarlet Jr",
"The real 3k for 6k"!
As the cameras (sensor+brain) get cheaper the point will be more about lenses.
S35 is just too expensive and bulky for many situations.

I guess this is the most compact you can get:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/show/highend/img/pmwf3/pmwf3_applicationshot.jpg
= 14x, $12k, 2.3 kg.

Will there ever be even something even close to Scarlet-X?

Scarlet Jr could be:
4/3", 4k for stills, 3k for motion, less HDR and other features,
but mainly zooms that are half the price and quarter the size.

Price point would match poorer countries, smaller economic areas and indies / freelancers that are not shooting full time with their own gear.
People who are now buying used 5d2's, when 1dX arrive. Or FS100, or HPX250 or AF100.
Scarlet will sell 20x quantities compared to Epic, but Scarlet Jr would sell 200x!
Real democratization of the trade!

Well, couldn't you have said something a few weeks ago? You realize that you hyped up all the Fixed Scarlet buyers for this event just to dissapoint them?
I for once wouldn't mind having to refocus after zooming in or out. Had to do that with every other lens I used so far. I still would get 120fps and 3k Raw. Can't it be a professional trainee camera? Scarlet Trainee?

Just think about the concept: you offer a training system with less shallow DoF (which is less frustrating when you are working in small teams and have less experience) and more cost-effective as schools and universities wouldn't have to buy lenses. They could also safe a lot on post-pro gear as the Scarlet 8x would have lower data rates. Still students could learn about the RedRaw workflow and color correcting RAW footage.

I AM also disapointed BUT we have to take something in consideration :
The Scarlet-X 14015$ package + Redmote + an L series Zoom Lens from Canon brings us to 16k$ more or less (buying the lens at Abelcine). It is 10k more expansive than what we expected but it is also more a less the same price as some other cameras in the industry that don't do any 4K.

I am SOOOO disapointed not to get 120 fps at 3K resolution but... It's like I have nothing planned to shoot that way now anyway and won't have a lot to shoot that way so....

Now, we'd like to see some footage of that Scarlet X camera... !

From Jim's signature:

"Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..."

If all of you were paying more attention to the market place and what has been selling, like Red has, you had to think there would be some major changes. Scarlet's initial inception was to bring a high quality motion picture quality camera to a larger market. Right now within the $12k-$20k market nothing touches what Scarlet can do. This will likely remain this way for at least 2, maybe 3 years. Also, don't discount that Red might release a smaller sensor camera in the near future. That's just not going to be Scarlet.

I feel for every single individual upset about losing 2/3"s there's about 35 or so really happy to get 24fps 4k S35.

If Jim/Red let slip the camera specs any sooner the competition would announce some new fangled 24fps 4k camera that it's development at the last minute and that won't be available for some time. Oh wait.......

We were talking about letting us now in advance that they won't to the Fixed Scarlet. There is a difference.

Just wanna say congrat RED, i am sure the scarlet will be the best on the market for a long time..
But i am sad i can t afford it, jumped from 6k to 14k is way too much.
I would loved to work on a 2/3 sensor (for documentary, run & gun shooting) with a RAW workflow, but that will stay a dream.

HH too all lucker that can afford it!! :001_tt1:

Jim did post several times that "things have changed". One thing I've learned about Red is don't assume anything until you can purchase one. They were still adding features to this camera this week.

hmm I'm dreaming with you mate :D

I'm not the first to say that but think of the Scarlet-X as an upgraded Red One MX instead of a downgraded Epc-X. And for a cheaper price point.

(I know Red One MX has some features that Scarlet-X doesn't like 4.5K shooting and stuff but last time I read specs it couldn't do any HDRX stuff... And because I DO think framerates will increase with formware updates, I think Scarlet-X is a very nice upgrade of the Red One MX)

Scarlet concept is IMHO not yet born.
A 2/3 sensor with fixed lens and the ability to have an interchangeable version.
I understand the limitation of K resolution vesus sensor size.

It's probably not yet possible to squeeze 4k in 2/3 inch.
As canon says the market is not yet ready for 4k. I hear Red saying the market is not yet ready for 2/3 otherwise they would have pushed the 2/3 sensor development.

But I still happy to have a cheap professional

s35 cam.

Hmmm... Well the Scarlet-x is an amazing camera, it's just not what I was hoping for (I really liked the Scarlet Fixed - compact all-in-one, low DOF easier to handle for post, 120fps at 3k, price point was a bonus - it would of fit my shooting style to a T).

Basically 180 degree turn from what I was hoping for but I think Red hit it on the mark for their target audience, it just not for me.

Cheers.

PS. If you happen to have a working Scarlet-F prototype lying around... Just saying.

"Everything…changes" comes across as disingenuous when an insider knows about a material change but continues to lead on his potential customer base. The disappointment for the Scarlet 2/3 fixed community is an opportunity for Red's competition in three ways:

(1) Red has signaled that it is not interested in the ENG community;
(2) People will be less willing to believe in and wait for Red products in development; and
(3) The first competitor (if any) to wake up and present an entry level raw camera will win the loyalty of future pro filmmakers.

That Scarlet X leads in its category is true, but it is also true that it shifted categories away from what many had hoped based on the hype.
