Jim, not to turn this into a political discussion, but you did mention the economy, so....

The stimulus package needs a lot of work. It requires bipartisan thinking, taking the best ideas from each side and working it into something that truly gets the economy stimulated. I hate to say this so early in Obama's presidency, but if they drop the ball on this one - tough times ahead for everybody, worldwide! We don't need politics right now, we need smart economic wizardry that devises a plan that has a positive short term result but an even better long term result. All around me people are losing their jobs, and it is finally starting to hit home. If we are even half the country we think we are, we better do everything in our power to get this right, and correct the insanity that has been going on for the past decade. We've all lost touch with reality and need to get back to basics.

The government could put together a 10 trillion dollar stimulus package and the end results would still be the same. Any package presented, no matter how it is arranged is simply putting off the inevitable. We are a nation of consumers, and not by in large, producers. If you need a visual example of the end result of this system, take a trip to Michigan. A nation that consumes more than it can produce is doomed. Each generation has been passing the buck, and as the saying goes, "the buck stops here". The economy wont be bouncing back at the end of the year, or the year after that or the year after that. It wont be bouncing back at all. It will be more like a slow, painful crawl. Get ready for a long, long haul.

Hey Jim, nice hearing from you. Yes, its bleak without a doubt and from what I gather its going to get a lot worse over the next 36 months. On the bright side I like trimming back to reassess my operations, and get to know my neighbors for as well. :) Best of luck with epics.

Keep on keeping on

As always, I appreciate such words from you.

But it's time to stop getting too negative now, new possibilities for someone starting out. Not enough work around maybe, but enough time to use your equipment for stuff others will hire you in the future (hopefully). You don't need a Hasselblad, Epic, Mamyia or whatever to proof that you can create something. Truth is if you don't shot with what you have expensive equipement will not change that. Mind your overhead is cheaper than for those biggies who went into debt for buying expensive equipment at this time. I still shot with an outdated EOS 10D. Maybe I replace it with a 50D. But is the 5D Mark II necessary? I have my doubts.

Not to get too far off topic here, but it depends on which festivals you are referring to. In many cases, those specs you mention are the deliverables, the display formats. But in any case, what I mean is that it's easy to get caught up in gear lust. When I see what people have done with an HV20 (a $699 camera) it inspires me to do more with what I have. Because they got a lot out of the camera and put emphasis on storytelling, acting, and set design/art direction. That's all I meant by that comment. I don't want to steer you away from getting a Red. It's an amazing camera and would certainly provide a wonderful palette to tell your stories, but at what expense?

This is for the student that posted earlier (or anyone interested with what is going on at the low cost end.)

Steve is right, you can do amazing stuff with very low cost tools these days. I just bought two Canon HG20s for $549 each (B&H - now $599 but probably just as cheap elsewhere). These are successors (2 gens newer) to the HV20, and provide true 1920 x 1080 recording at 24 Mbs (AVCHD/H.264) 24p or 30p to an internal 60 gig harddrive or to SD cards. While it won't provide all of the image niceties of the much more expensive cameras - it is pretty damn good and a great learning tool that, given good lighting and a creative eye, is capable of producing images that would hold up quite well in almost any venue. I have a REDONE (and will upgrade to X) but bought these to experiment with 3D work and haven't been disappointed.

@AquaVideoRed206: You're damn right. I've done my first feature on a HC1 and a FX1. Both ConsumerCams, even if some say that the FX1 would be a Prosumer one. It's not.

But the Image I got from them is clean and destroyed by me in Post. No one sees that it's Video. Just work creative with the things you have.

The Whole feature cost me 3500€

I see any hardship (including economic hardship) as a test.
A trail by fire that only the fittest survive. What doesn't kill us
makes us stronger and forces us to be creative in different ways.

So we suck it up, help those within reach and keep moving forward.

Good to hear from you Jim.

I agree that the Red Ray tidbit is fantastic news!

I also noticed the reference to the connections, both mechanical and electrical, on the new units. Those were features left off the renders, for understandable reasons.

Without giving away too much, would you mind saying a few words about the direction these are going? Are the mecahnical connections tool-less? How/where does it attach from module to module? Is the electrical connection some sort of "stackable" connector type? Does the last connector in the module have some sort of terminator and/or end cap to protect it from the elements?

I understand the need to not divulge too much detail, but a general idea of the concepts would be interesting.

Thanks.

-Steve

RED Ray prototype footage looks FANTASTIC.

"RED RAY prototype footage"...music, sweet music to my ears.

the only thing that will get us out of this mess is time.

and innovation, the only authentic means to wealth creation.

glad to hear that RED is hanging in...financial staying power and the ability to generate an innovative product mix during the lean years, are going to pay off in the long haul.

Red Scarlet IS Economic Stimulus!

The money I have sitting in the bank waiting for a Scarlet S35 is not doing the economy much good. It is not going to Japan, but waiting to be sent to Lake Forest, CA, USA.

Please don't let the economy delay the release date.

Jim, last year at NAB you looked pretty enthusiastic about REDRAY when you explained it to a few of us at the booth. Good to see that enthusiasm is still there. Some of us here in this forum were beginning to wonder about REDRAY, probably because of all the buzz around Scarlet and Epic, with no REDRAY news for what seemed a long lengthy time. Thanks for the update!

RED Ray prototype footage looks FANTASTIC. The aluminum Scarlet and Epic prototypes look INCREDIBLE. The mechanical and electronic connections are better than I had dreamed they could be.

Pictures?

Anyway, good RED Ray news!

will this "redray" use another great wavelet codec from red, like .r3d but not raw? it would be great to have a light intermediate codec!!!!

Independent filmmaking is a passion. It doesn't require a Red to do it. It requires a camera, a vision, and an ability to work creatively with others. This is something you can do for less than $1,000. As Jim said, if you can afford the camera, then that's one thing. But, to go broke over it is something that might not make sense, especially given the economic climate. Use as much of your school's equipment as you can and learn to work with what you've got. It's a very valuable lesson that will benefit you greatly down the line.

I'm a film student as well, though I'm a sophomore. So far in the 2 semesters that we've been shooting on film, I've spent about the price of a 2/3 Scarlet on film, processing, and transfer. Just the other day I bought 1300 ft of film to shoot my final for this semester. The cost of the film plus getting it processed and transferred is going to cost about $1100-$1200 (plus, we're also looking at getting it transferred to HD, which would make it a lot more). If I was able to buy a 2/3 Scarlet right now, by the time I graduate, it would have more than paid for itself.
