che looked unreal.

I would love to get a look at che, but unfortunately it's not playing anywhere near Syracuse :ranting2:

I'm not sure how I feel about studying on film. In fact, there are many rumors here of a complete switch to digital. Don't get me wrong, I would love to work with film...but to be most competitive in this quickly changing field, i feel film students right know are at great advantage. because most professionals must spend most of their time being, well, professional. film students have four years and no major commitments other than to learn. spending all that time learning digital could give us an invaluable leg up, something that will only happen at this very unique transitional stage. PS we just got a ridiculous amount of money from george lucas, and i would love nothing more than to see a bunch of red cameras here at USC.

The head of our department is concerned with the switch to digital and is looking at getting at least one RED, but he also insists that a) everyone learns to shoot on film, and b) learns how to edit with flatbeds. I agree with him on those points because all the digital stuff is based on the old analog stuff, so if you learn the source, you understand the current software/hardware at a much deeper level.

i apologize for again being off topic, but i just read michael bay is remaking the Birds, and there is a Bonnie and Clyde remake in the works starring Hilary Duff. Will someone please hold my hand while we have a moment of silence for whatever respect was left in our art? :bye2:

This thread is really drifting OT... But while we're at it, I think most film schools will be all digital within the next couple years. Even if they don't want to be, I think they will have to be in order to stay price-competitive and to remain in-step with the industry as a whole. The future is all digital, just as still photography has gone. Sure, some will continue to shoot film for one reason or another (mostly artistic) for as long as film exists, but from a practicality point of view, digital makes the most sense.

IMO, I can't believe that film schools are not jumping all over the digital revolution like a pack of rabid hyenas. It is the ultimate paradigm shift for filmmaking instruction -- it's like having the ability to shoot and process endless feet of film, only keep what is worth saving. Students can shoot as much as they have time (and cheap drive space) to accommodate and learn from all that time doing it. With film, so many have to find extra money just to buy and process film stock. The poor student will shoot a few short pieces here and there and before they know it, they have shot their wad on less footage than someone with a RED could generate in a couple days.

I liked this. Death and birth are one in the same, just have to be able to see it.
Thanks for the small update Jim.

I couldn't agree more!

Now is the time to go for it. Reach out to the clients and show them a new way to go. Red allows for unprecedented quality while keeping a budget in line with the times. If we're smart, we can edge ahead of our "old world" competition.

Shooting with expensive filmstock teaches to rethink what you really want. Personally I find it important that young filmakers learn to make up their mind before thy shoot - hunting is better than collecting, IMO.

Nonetheless, I fully agree that filmschools have to follow the obvious paradigmshift from analog to fully digital.

RedOne's biggest advantage for me is the fact that no producer is behind my neck telling me to safe stock. But knowing how to shoot with film is more and more becoming a mental luxury these days and with any kind of knowledge valuable even if there is no direct application.

I encourage all new shooters to learn how to edit. That will shape you into a better shooter..

:whistling: I hope I don't have to watch through 99.99% of it..
Testing doesn't mean produce Stuff to show around for me. No Painter shows everything he paints, but there is a lot of paper wasted til he does things the way he wants. So yeah, you're right. I wouldn't want to look through every testing stuff done by everyone, but looking through your stuff makes you learn something.

True. If you know what an edit looks like you will produce much less waste. And by the way, get an understanding what can and will be done in Post, and how it's done. The Guy doing this stuff will love you if you think about him from time to time while shooting. :)

These are scary times indeed!!! Despite my optimism, the reality is that "Ads" are the first budgets that are scaled back!!! My main clients which are primarily Japanese electronics manufactures have seen a major drop in sales. My work-orders have definitely reflected those losses and we are now faced with the reality that recovery will not happen this year or even in next. By tradition, ad spending rises during declines but what we are experiencing now has not been seen in my lifetime.

Yes, everyone should proceed with extreme caution. I have rolled back spending and am purging gear that is seldom used instead of depleting reserves. Furthermore, I have had to put on my "hustle hat" and reinvent what we do and how we do it... I now prospect, network and actually do some selling which I haven't done in a long time. I am happy to report that our Red and the marketing of the images it produces has definitely aided in our marketing efforts.

The stimulus package needs a lot of work. It requires bipartisan thinking, taking the best ideas from each side and working it into something that truly gets the economy stimulated. I hate to say this so early in Obama's presidency, but if they drop the ball on this one - tough times ahead for everybody, worldwide! We don't need politics right now, we need smart economic wizardry that devises a plan that has a positive short term result but an even better long term result. All around me people are losing their jobs, and it is finally starting to hit home. If we are even half the country we think we are, we better do everything in our power to get this right, and correct the insanity that has been going on for the past decade. We've all lost touch with reality and need to get back to basics.
All one has to do is read the stimulus package ... and look at who authored it ... to see who and what has been wrong with the economy for the past decade ... with this crew in charge .... if you're not close to Pelosi .....

Thanks for the post Jim!

I Can't wait to see the RED-RAY footage!

Dave

Guys, the politics are getting a little thick in here, I will probably shut this thread down soon.

But Jim's post is mostly about the economic landscape and how that will possibly affect Red because of things beyond their control. The economic landscape is substantially screwed because of failed politics and greed on Wall Street. I didn't want to go there because I'd rather talk about cameras, but it's just so hard to ignore these days. But I respect your decision to keep this on track with Red related issues. Sure is better than politics.

Yeah, Steve... I know... And that said, I'm of the opinion that a "stimulus" bill is something that will lead us down the wrong path. An abundance of debt is what got us into this mess. I don't see how more debt by way of further devaluing the American Dollar through borrowing against our nation (up to the tune of tens or hundreds of billions of those dollars) is going to get us out of anything. And if it does prove successful in some way, or at least if this nation does avoid financial ruin, those who persevere and succeed in the tough times will be the ones to shoulder and repay this new tax burden in the years to come. And many of the successful will be ones who never directly benefitted from any of the "stimulus" funds or programs. ...Just my opinion.

Anyway, let's talk about camera stuff. Seriously, I want to know more about RED-RAY. Does it still use conventional DVD media? Will we be able to drop in CF cards, connect a RED DRIVE/RAM? How do those 128GB RED-MAG things we've seen in some of the Dec. 3rd renders play into all of this. Is RED-RAY destined for a broad retail market or just for the production industry?

Free Red-Rays for everyone - not a bad stimulus package, especially for us Redusers. :)

I too am curious about the recording capabilities and how all of this will be tied in with Red-Ray. Is there upgradeability built in to accommodate advances in storage technology?

When times are tough, the stories are touching.

When times are tough, the stories are touching.

I look forward to the great stories that will be told as we go through tough times. RED is just going to be the best way to tell those stories for awhile.

And in 90 years the assets won't look as bad as the films from the 20's. That's if the assets have been stored properly.

Nope. It blocks you in testing everything you want.

Ok one last little comment on this topic then I'll leave it alone in this thread.

Hans is right; it teaches you to really shoot well. It teaches you to think when exposing, focusing, and framing. It teaches you to take your time and shoot actually worth while shots when it counts. For testing, use a cheap video camera. I'd rather have taken the time now to really learn how to shoot than to be wasting time on set in the future. Now is when I have the time.

It's like running with a parachute.
