I agree with most points made about the film vs. digital shooting ratio off-topic mumbo jumbo conversation that developed here, and couldn't hold back. I just wanted to point out that everyone is right. We are simply looking at it from different angles as we are all developing from different sets of experiences... ultimately the goal is the same one, to become a great filmmaker. Right?

If you want a good project you need to know what you want. Without a vision you at best will waste bug bucks shooting slow or overshooting, regardless of the medium.

Anyway, I guess my point is that film does add pressure on you to figure things out before hand, but if you don't get that on your own then shooting film can't make you a better filmmaker.

Thanks for your update about the camera and economic situations!

Hope remains with us, one day everything change and we are striving for that.

Be careful with your spending. Invest only in things you know can make you money. This economic situation will not correct itself for a few years (not weeks or months).

Just so you know...

Jim

Certainly feeling the pain with our own studio up here in Portland, not being able to buy RED 3033 and 3034 this year as we had planned.

Most our investors were either Real Estate or Wall Street guys =slaughtered and reeling from losses and broker than we are.

We even have to sell our Pablo 4K, just to survive as we cant get financing on the support gear... so depressing... especially with the new RED developments.

We never even had a chance to test the r3d workflow!

We are now going to buy 1 Red One... and then pump the rest of the money into finishing the buildout of our 21,000 sq/ft Studio.

We are then going to sublease most of it out to cover overhead and ride out
this downturn the best we can.

Jim is correct, this will take years and get worse before it gets better.

The bailout is a joke... because what they dont want you to know is that
while a 1.3T real estate bubble would suck, it would only take 6 QTRS to
work thru retiring all those NINJA loans (No income No Job = NINJA)

but the dumb greedy bastards at the banks leveraged those toxic mortgages 50 to 1 with unregulated bogus securities called credit default swaps...

it worked, because if losers defaulted, it didnt matter, housing prices were soaring and the house was worth more than what it was sold for...

see the problem here? bogus demand, an inevitable bubble as NOTHING goes up forever... and POP!

Now we have a compounded problem. 50 times worse than advertised!!

tell me, what the hell good is an $900B bailout going to do for a $50 TRILLION DOLLAR problem?

Like most Americans, its called kicking the can down the road...while China, a communist country mind you, bails out the largest democracy by buying all our debt. Now that is irony.

this is a cluster fuck of epic proportions and we are in uncharted territory

This is the reason Obama is warning about a collapse...its VERY REAL.

like that Rogue Trader who took down Londons oldest bank... our global economy is broken right now... from greedy bastards rogue trading.

Im an optimist and not an alarmist, but if people knew how bad this shit
really was... there would be a

RUN ON THE BANKS... collapse. rioting... who knows. we have never seen this in our lifetime. Hence a bailout being a necessary evil.

The WORST recession lasted 26 years in the late 1800's so we will survive.

but hey, if we do collapse, I trust the SHOT ON RED section of this site will have some killer LIVE ACTION

The latter being the MOST IMPORTANT THING I WROTE... Jim also gave some great clues here as to the future!!

THAT IS EXCITING and all I care about is shooting with an EPIC!

As CRAZY as it sounds, The WORST THING WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW
IS SAVE our $.

We need to spend, spend spend and start by buying Red cameras and what sounds like the killer RED RAY.

Then Jim can buy more parts, pay for more R&D and subs can order more materials... and mining companies can dig for more ore... and on and on.

EXACTLY. I wish the President would be encouraging people to spend whatever they can. Individually it's good to tighten belts, but that's what killing us collectively.

Individually it's good to tighten belts, but that's what killing us collectively.

The problem here is that we as a nation have been pushing growth on credit we can't pay back. We overheated the engine with money we had no chance of ever paying back and now we are all losing our collective shit as we return not simply to a nation of savers but a nation of people who spend within our means. We will not be back to our previous level of spending and growth once we finally bottom out and start heading back up because credit markets are going to be tight for many years to come...especially if we see Nationalization of the banks happen (which is all but certain at this point).

If the economy sucks so hard why is cinema glass so damn expensive!!! Honestly, it's ridiculous out there..

Hi,

Because good glass is a great long term investment that makes money regardless of the economy.

Its great to hear some people are not pulling the covers over their heads hoping the monsters go away. Thanks for the honesty Jim. Its rare and appreciated. Its no mystery why Red is the great hope it is.

I look at it all this way. Hard times or not I'm gonna be making movies, so whats the difference? No Steak and Lobster? Cause up till now all my sets had roses and caviar waiting for the talent in their trailers! RIGHT! Its gonna be great either way...if i get paid great...if i don't great. If i get to shoot red great...if not...well...then...I take it all back, my work is shit, i hate my life. I KID!!! I love making movies so I'm hooped either way, bring on the recession...ill film that too!

Cant wait to see these cameras (or at least their progress!!)
:turned:

Maybe he should encourage the Bosses of the People to give them more money. People that have enough money tend to spend it, which would mean helping the Economy out of this hard times. If you cut the money to the masses, if it's half-time work or fireing them there will soon be no customers at all... And now imagine a Economy without customers... :bye2:

So it's easier as one may think. Give money to the People so that they can spend it on stuff companies that struggle produce. Don't give the Money to the companies. They may live on for a while, but a working Economy is build on Customers buying stuff, not Presidents spending Money to Companies...

Respect

What a wild ride it is with the economy. Partners are falling down (going bankrupt), the economy is in the tank, many people are not taking delivery of the cameras they put down deposits on... generally very bleak.

On the other hand, more RED ONEs are going out the door faster than ever before (new customers). RED Ray prototype footage looks FANTASTIC. The aluminum Scarlet and Epic prototypes look INCREDIBLE. The mechanical and electronic connections are better than I had dreamed they could be.

So what's the worry? ASIC development, Monstro development setbacks (minor but irritating), many subs that are buckling under the pressure of the economy... standard stuff.

These are very rough times in case you haven't noticed. As self-contained as we are at RED, we do rely on some outside sources. It is incredible how messed up the rest of the world is right now. We will work through all of the problems we face (we always do), but I feel a bit sad for how many others are at such peril these days. You read about it in the newspaper, we see it 1st hand.

Be careful with your spending. Invest only in things you know can make you money. This economic situation will not correct itself for a few years (not weeks or months).

Good looking out Jim.

Hi jimm.. Economic situation is not only the matter right now see how fast technology changing! hope u see this.. ( http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/06/nec-develops-processor-for-12-megapixel-camera-phones/ ). How fast the pixel world changing i think u have to rethink once more before the final spec of sarlet come out for really wanted coustomers is there any posibility to upgrade upto 25 mp on the S35 scarlet DSMC? (canon also coming with their 50 mp DSLR) (some people are really expecting one more revolution frm red team at the matter of price too in this current situvation.)
and like the way of ur service really u r caring ur customers who already got red nd those who preparing for SCARLET , EPIC , RED RAY

megapixels are meaningless , its the amount of sensitivity and light per pixel you want to worry about. you could have 100megapixel s35 sensor , wouldn't get you a better image. in fact it might get you a worse image because each pixel would take in less light

That is such a fallacy and part of why we are in this mess in the first place. The reality is that the buying spree of the las 8 years was an optical illusion fueled by credit cards, erroneous home refinacing, Wall St. shenanigans and Ponzi schemes gallore. Now everybody is waking up to a huge hang over. The sad truth is that a lot of folks have to choose between buying the $1500 plasma TV and paying this month's rent. Guess which one is a priority. Couple of years back I read about how the people in the United States had the least bank savings in the entire world. The article warned that this was a dangerous position to be if there was an economic meltdown and no cash to rely on in case of job loss or worst. And guess what? Here we are, in that same situation. There are certain items in your life that you need to purchase for essential personal use or for business. There are others that are luxuries. You have to be very clear which is which because when the landlord comes knocking on the door you won't be able to pay him with your plasma TV.

That's right, but if there is any Money to spend, and this means "there to spend" then it would be a real problem to not spend it becaus you're afraid to lose your job. Which money will you get paid with when noone spends any money at all?

Its a matter of quickly adapting to the new economic environment, and not exhausting reserves which may have to last several years.

Our outfit is a conservation NGO making NZ natural history programming for free public use.

My wife and I sleep on the floor of the office (camping beds), we own all our own gear rather than hire, make as much of that gear as possible, have a big vege garden, 2 years of rice in storage, have a broad base of support and no one gets paid.

Sound tough, and it is, but we will be able to keep going no matter what the hell happens.

My plan for getting an EPIC is to be able to throw every bit of income into buying the core camera brains, and make use of second hand pentax manual lenses, and home made accessories (rods, matte box, video assist, brackets, etc). Slowly replacing with professional parts as $$$ comes in. Well its a plan.

We live in interesting times.
