  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UNHAPPY with Used RED-ONE price drop ! :(

One thing I think a lot of the guys preaching the virtues of the R1 don't get, is that the MX sensor on the R1 and the Epic is not even remotely similarily in behaviour.

I never liked the R1 MX very much. I do love the Epic/Scarlet incarnation of the MX, though.
That is NOT to say you cannot make beautifull images with a R1 mx, cause you can. I am littelarily working on multiple hours of beautifull R1 MX footy right now. But that is because we didn't go into the oversell part of the sensor on the R1.
I just found that cam a bit... out of ballance and pushed beyond its limits...

I know that may sound odd. But using/seeing is believing.

For comparison, My F900 is 7 years old. I bought it new at $70,000. It's worth about $7,000 if I were to sell it. But, it still works for certain clients and is perfect for broadcast. As a package, It earns $1,000 for a daily rental. The R1 is an awesome rig. The R1's return on investment is very high compared to other cameras. If you're working the R1, keep it:)

I've seen you hint at this many times, but this is the first time I've heard you say you don't like the R1 MX. Can you explain a bit further what you have found between the R1 M, R1 MX, and Epic/Scarlet? I think I know where you're going with this, but rather than assume I'd rather hear your thoughts.

If it is the sensor size, then between 5K Epic and 4K Scarlet, it should also happen some substantial differences following the same principle...

And you should be able to find the same in these both new cameras (Epic vs. Scarlet), once considering distinct «parts of the sensor».

Or doesn't it apply the same find, hey Gunleik?

I never understood the panic from R1MX owners, just because the Epic is out suddenly the R1MX is a paperweight? its a fantastic camera. Truth be told, in its current build is completely reliable, affordable, ergonomically sound, and has a TON of support both interms of 3rd party manufacturers, and user base.

I mean, smart people would be picking up R1MXs right now for the ridiculous prices they are going for. I saw one with EVF and LCD, WITH the 18-85 RED zoom, Going for 15k.... Thats like 9k for the body and LCD, cause a used 18-85 is about 6k. Thats a FREAKING STEAL!

Some people are truly spoiled. Hah, we still love our Red One. It will continue to crank out a few more features before we upgrade. Get a good script, light it well, and execute! Heck even a 5d will still be around a few years from now.

Hehe. Yup. I agree. I like the Epic a lot and I was tempted to go Stage 3 so I could personally have one, but my business partner already has his and so I decided to keep my R1 MX because frankly it is plenty of camera for a lot of projects we do. There are plenty of other places to put that money to support our RED cameras such as post, lenses, etc. GWTDT should help prove R1's worth.

that's funny. I personally have been noticing I prefer MX footage to Epic, for some reason I think it's better. Call me crazy.

oh and before anyone calls me crazy, you'd be calling David Fincher crazy too because he prefers the look of Red One MX to that of the Epic.

"I like the Red One MX a lot- in fact, I wish we hadn't switched to the Epic at the end of the shoot. There's nothing wrong with the Epic, but I sort of like the graininess of the MX. It's an aesthetic choice, not a technical one." -David Fincher

"Since our Red-One is virtually new, with only about 30 minutes of footage shot with it, I was hoping to sell it, with only the lose of a few thousand dollars, to pay for a complete Scarlet-X set up. Especially since the original cost of the Red-One "body" is about the same as the entire cost of a Scarlet-X package."

I think Scarlet-X is more appealing to the different professional avenues of film then RED ONE. The higher frame rates of the Red One don't outweigh the smaller size and 4k hdx (and 5k stills) that Scarlet offers. And because Scarlet is almost too good for the price, that in itself directly correlates with RED ONE pricing.

Not too mention it's new and exciting, and the Dragon sensor that everyone is waiting for =) As a film student and RED enthusiast, I'm excited because now I can actually afford a RED ONE M-X instead of a Scarlet.

The other side:

Bob the new guy says this: I am considering a RED specifically for creating 3D stereo pairs for a special stereoscopic printing process. For everything else, I'll remain with film and view cameras. I am always glad to see the prices drop for used stuff. Better yet, for specific RED cameras and accessories.

Sad fact of the matter is there is always something better, with higher resolution and lower prices arriving. Only to be replaced with something else, after that.

It's called 'planned obsolescence' ;-)
