I think it's nuts that people are selling Red One MX's and exchanging them with Scarlets. Exchanging with Epic? Yeah, that makes sense. But Scarlet? No way, these $14K Red One MX packages are WAY, WAY, WAY better values than Scarlet, and shoot the same, beautiful footage.
Eventually, people will figure this out and the cost of used Red One MX kits will stop dropping.
I have a $70,000 Digital Betacam that I would be lucky to sell for $1000...this is nothing new.
What is surprising is how long the Red Ones held their value, they are after all a 5 year old camera.
Agreed. You can even pick up a F900 for under $10k .... 10 years ago it was, what? $90k or something?
I think Red One is keeping its resale value very well, not to mention generous stage 3, where each owner could return it for 100% trade-in....a deal of the century.
But more importantly, if he has not managed to generate return at least 10 times the drop in value from using the camera, he shouldn't be buying the camera.
"......stage 3, where each owner could return it for 100% trade-in." Man, I don't know where you got THAT idea.
According to the guys at Red, they take NO trade-ins whatsoever. They told me, that even though our R1 has less than 30 "minutes" of footage shot with it and only 7 months old, they will NOT take it back as a return, or trade. Please explain that if you can?

Really!!!,he states he has shot 30 min on his red,I would really love to get the gig's that pay 10 times the value of his purchase in 30 minutes..Tassie must have huge budget's
Anne
No, no!! We shoot wildlife. Wildlife. And, specialized wildlife at that. Not commercials, TV movies, or feature films like most of you guys.
We have only been ABLE to shoot 30 minutes worth because animals are that way. Unpredictable, seasonal, difficult, and a real challenge. But, that's what makes it fun.
This is why our budget is so small. We're not talking millions, or even 100s of thousands here.

George,I was supporting you,I think Pawel,is out of line to put some random figure on who should buy a red.

My first BetaCam cost $50,000 - sold it for $3,500....
I have a wide range of clients requiring different workflows so my camera purchasing philosophy is .. if the camera can not pay for its self in 18 to 24 months based on daily rental rates its not worth owning. I would rent. I can’t wait to get my Scarlet.
