Ok, since nobody can post anything on the UW BB Users Group sticky can we make another continuation of the thread so that we can communicate again.

How about here? The old thread is not working.

OK, sounds good to me.
What's wrong with the old post, it doesn't take new posts?

The old bubble blowers thread won't take any new posts so I thought I'd try to start one here for all the old Bubble Blowers. I'll email Mike a link. If you know others maybe this can get started again.

Maybe it's a good idea to PM all previous users on the old forum. If you you write up a little announcement we can both PM that to everybody. It's a bit of a job, but if we split it into half, say you do odd pages and I even ones from the old posts, we can reach many

Sounds good, I'll do the odd pages.

How bout this:

Since the old Bubble Blowers User Thread is down and we can't post to the old thread we have started another at this link.

Please join and subscribe so that we can get it going again. Feel free to forward this to your Bubble Blower friends.

What happened to the other thread?

You can't post anything there anymore after the RED website went down. Have you tried posting there?? It doesn't work for me. There's been nothing posted there for a while.

So Aymen and I are trying to have it continue here.

i've also heard good things about hollywood divers, although i have never dived with them. doubt you'd go wrong with them.

Frazier,

My name is actually Amund, "aymen" is my nick from way back (what they call me in Egypt, because Aymen and Ayman is a common name there). Supposedly the administrator was going to change it into my real name, but nothing much has happened yet

Anyway, I am e-mailing people on every even page, but I quickly realized we will be sending to the same people because they of course appear on both odd and even pages! Never mind I guess, as long as we get people back in here

That thread was an massive beast. :emote_22_yikes:
Can't hurt to start over.

I agree, it was pretty tough for any one new to figure out what is going on because of all the speculation, changes, updates, etc. from the early days. A lot has changed and now that both Gates and AquaVideo (that's me - I used to be AquaVideoRED206 before the real names policy) have been delivering products and accessories for awhile.

If it is all right with people, over the next couple weeks I will try to consolidate some of the info I posted - i.e. some of the generic stuff about lens needs and controls, implications of RAW recording, etc. along with some of the specifics about our setup.

In the meantime we have a .pdf brochure that includes some notes on some of these things over at our website:

http://www.aquavideo.com/pdfs/RED1HousingBrochure309.pdf

and I've attached a couple of quick photos of our housing. The pics are from the first proto/production version back in spring of '08 but externally they still look pretty similar.

We also have a PVC version that sells for about $2K less. I'll post a photo when I am in front of my main computer. Although 80 per cent of the housings sold have been aluminum I have told all of the PVC purchasers that if for any reason they decide they would prefer aluminum, they can trade the PVC unit in on the aluminum (paying the price difference of course!) and so far (a couple sold more than a year ago) nobody has taken me up on it. It is actually a good way to go for two reasons beyond price: 1) it is much lighter so usable for surf or wet weather type shooting 2) less outlay now with Epic coming up. And yes we will have some tradein discounts on the epic housing available for those who purchase now.

Basic ballpark pricing is about $6900 for pvc and $8900 for aluminum with acrylic dome port. Add about $1800 for 8" AR coated glass dome. Simple bentshaft controls for lens focus and iris that control many lenses are supplied. Precision mechanical gears are $3500 for a pair. Most people are moving to the Birger smart mount for Canon EF lenses and our controller for focus and iris for the Birger is $1699 it is an externally mounted box with a short coil cable that can be easily retrofitted to earlier housings and allows fingertip control or it can be used slightly off the housing by a second diver (or at much greater distance with a special cable.)

Color science for red channel ALSO ?

Color science for red channel ALSO ?

I wonder if RED have applied the 'new' color science to principally the blue channel only (for the land based / tunsgten folk) ?

For the underwater community it would be nice to know if the red channel has received the same 'treatment' :smile5:

While Graeme would give the most authoritative answer, I would pass on this note: it is highly likely the "new color science" deals with converting uncorrected sensor data into an image by changing a number of interdependent values. In other words, while the changes may be most visually obvious in the blue channel I would not make the assumption that other derived RGB values are unaffected.

To state the obvious: test, test, test

Tokina 11-16 PL lens underwater

Tokina 11-16 PL lens underwater

Well, I've been using the new Tokina 11-16 PL conversion underwater in the Gates deep red housing for a month now and have had some quite impressive results.

What I can share and tell you is that it resolves a very good picture with very little distortion. I'd say better than the 18-50 by a long shot and almost as good as my Arri Zeiss 14mm standard 2.1 prime lens. I say almost as good...about 95% as good if that is any indicator. This is all at the 16mm end. If i shoot it at the 11 to about 14mm end, then i found quite a bit of distortion that may be due to a number of factors. For now, i did not have the correct port extender - i used my 18-50 port extender that is a few inches too long. This may or may not be the reason for so much distortion, but once i have the proper port extender, then I can give a summation of the results.

What i can say though is that for the money, it is a great lens and a definite part of my u/w kit now. The only issue i had besides the distortion is that the zoom ring was very hard to turn. In fact i could not get it to move using the deep red zoom motor. I had to connect it to the focus--manual hand turning wheel in order to zoom out/in. And then i connected focus to the right side zoom/motorized wheel---it worked fine. I've already contacted Duclos and they were very concerned to see what they can do to make any adjustments to correct the tightness on the zoom function.

All and all a nice lens and I should soon be able to give results on the final outcome after using a shorter port extender.

Some photos of the lens adapted to the RED ONE and deep red housing attached.

Tokina 11-16 Underwater screen grab

Tokina 11-16 Underwater screen grab

Well, here is a screen grab from the Tokina 11-16 PL mount lens from an underwater shoot. I'm limited to file size so this is the best i can do on reduser.
