For my film I shot on red epic. Some footage was 5k anamorphic 2.4:1, 5k 16X9, and various HD formats with a canon XA-20 and stock footage. The red footage was transcoded in resolve. I had a few scenes I know I was going to use and wanted to get those shots to my VFX artist asap. In avid I made an AFF with those shots and sent it over to resolve. Did the online so it brought in the 5k 16X9 footage then I'm doing a 2k master so I sent out 2k DPX files to the VFX artist. It seemed to work but I had a few questions. When selecting what kind of 2k DPX files I wanted to export out as there were multiple options. 16X9 seemed to be the best. We tried various ones, for example 2k film, but that put pillars on the left and right side. Was 2k 16X9 correct? In the end I'll have to put a mask on the image to match the anamorphic 2.4:1. Now when I get pic lock, I have VFX shots for the anamorphic footage. Will the 2k 16X9 be used as well? I also have VFX for the HD 1920X1080 footage. Even though I'm doing a 2k master, I should send HD DPX files to the VFX artist, correct? Then uprez later.
My other issue when trying to read different posts I got a little confused. I have a colorist, but some stuff is new for him as well. I keep reading, your resolve timeline needs to be in the format you want to finish in, which would be 2k. But when I do my online I'm importing all the raw 5k and HD footage. This is to grade the raw files. So why would the timeline be 2k if the raw files are bigger and or smaller? In the end I want to have a 2k master and a HD master. So far we are in the beginning stages of post, but I want to make sure I'm understanding everything correctly. There just seems to be a lot of options and I don't want to get myself in a bad situation especially with spending the money on VFX. Thanks!
