  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

***UNDERSTAND THIS*** ..and you will have less expectations!!

I am shooting faster ISO now - it goes against 20 years of learning

but less light saves money because I can work faster or unnassisted

AF again saves money because I take less frames (I use to shoot 'bankers')

Most images I take i 'could' take with my hassy but the nikon makes it faster lighter and quicker and therefore cheaper

So AF and ISO are IMO important features for still photography as a business activity

also in cam JPGs are a real help for quick/cheap (I shoot RAW/JPG all the time)

Im not sure that I see a Red offering that will come close to nikon on the stills front, obviously specs are not known but FF35 is at least a requirement

Quit worrying about the 5D and 7D. They are entirely different animals compared to the Red and Scarlet.

I just did a shoot in the jungles of central America along the Guatamalan / Belize border. I wouldn't want to lug around a 10lbs rig plus a stills camera, then drop them in the mud. (Did you know a 7D is sealed pretty tight.) On the other hand, I won't be doing much movie making on a DSLR.

Different strengths and weaknesses, different price point, all different. No need complain. Heck, we are getting lots of new tool options. Embrace them for what they allow you to do.

If you want a still camera buy a canon eos 1d mark IV
If you want a film camera buy a Red One
If you want to all just complain how the equipment isnt good enough for you to tell your stories take a check on yourself. If your a good photojournalist you can make it so YOU are the essential part not your 40000mp 3000000iso camera which you still complain about because its not as good as something that is coming out in 13 years listen people go out and shoot, film, do something with whatever ya got cause Im sure what is on the market is plenty capable of telling any story you ever need.

Nor Canon or Nikon or any other Still Cameras from any manufacturer will present and bring you anything even remotely close to what RED is and will be offering as far as "MOTION CAPTURE" goes, in any of their current Still Cameras configurations and that is IT!!!

How do you know what these "Still Cameras" have planned to do in the very near future, got a crystal ball? You must be worried cause you just posted a long drawn out rabble that we have heard many many times on this site. Get over it.

No Crystal ball needed, simple facts of how technology is, and how the current still camera are designed, and if you read more carefully you understand better, that I have referred to current designs and the fact of how a BODY must be designed from scratch in order to accomplish what RED is about to with Scarlet and Epic, you can't just do that on an existing Body design and structure, just that simple!

NO I never worry, not ever!

However just as every one else I also have my moments, and hat was one of them, I posted, I rant, I apologies about it, and moved on, but I never made insignificant and totally worthless and out of point comparisons of this and that of futures that have nothing to do with each other, and comparing H2.64 files with a RAW codec, is literally comparing Apples and Oranges, I just don't do that.

So I guess you just didn't get my point or didn't care to get it, please go back up and read, as I have made my points quite clear, and not trying to predict any future.

Also remember that I have never told any one to get over, I'm simply saying to have less expectations of a current product which can't and will never deliver what it is been asked to deliver, it is entirely each individual's right to have an opinion, and so it is mine, but it is not yours to tell some one else to get OVER, I have nothing to get OVER of!

If you post and reply to any of my threads do not insult my intelligence and do as I do, always post respectfully, thanks.

Good call... I watched Dino G's post with the b-ballers and I read what the youtube viewers were saying after I watched it,, nothing about the camera, but nastily argued about different ballers in the spot. They were nasty as I said which reminded of some of the conversations which go around here about apples and oranges anyway.

Some people like to poop on everything and fly away into cyberland. They say all the nasty things they want to tell people in their real lives but are too cowardly to do it. There is a reason why they are cowards about it. Because if a person approaches others face to face with this kind of an attitude, they rarely find acceptance. Until they find friends who have the same attitude and grovel together.

All great things start with an attitude to match.

I feel this way about all the camera A vs camera B battles going on lately. Reduser is a place to learn and it's such a great kept secret. With all the attention RED gets in the world no wonder so many are flocking and hopefully they don't just stop by to take a shit.

Hop in and enjoy the ride... however you capture your images. The audience only recognizes how they feel.

For me it is always must be a place to share opinions, doing so in a elegant and educated way as to not offend any one, I usually never really post anything as far as VS., and this is no exception, at it does not make distinct comparisons but rather points out my point of view to what Still manufacturers can and can not do with CURRENT Still Camera Models.

On an other post I did Ranted about Canon, but it was centered specifically to my disappointment on how they choose to do business, and in how they failed to address the AF issue on their 1D III cameras.

Realizing that I did posted in a bit of s stressful point in my life, I posted in an other thread saying so, and acknowledging Canon's achievements, including the new 1D IV, even so also here they could have delivered a bit better MP count and Speed performance.

BUt as far as Video, I just can't comment or would do so, as what they offer in the same exact body is already a very Big plus, but could not EVER be compared to RED, do to superior Image RAW codec quality and Speed, among just but two of the main differences.

Btw, appreciated your support, I like to hear and give voice to any one, but I just can't stand when some one that knows nothing of me or what I know, comes and talks down on me, or says something so Child spoken words like "Get Over it".

lovely thread.. JJ you need to post more often here

Just to chime in... Lets not forget that Canon has moved it's video people to wirk on their stills cameras. So no illusions about them protecting their video cameras, cos thanks to Red they wont.

When and only when FF Scarlet has been around for a year or so will CaNik realise how many still shooters (wildlife, sports and news especially) will be coming in droves to 30 frames a second of RAW with optional pre-record.

After all: Content is King!

Still shooters are not going to be switching over to the Scarlet in droves. This doesn't make any sense.

Which Scarlet? S35?

I'm hoping that they won't, until I get mine! I don't want to be trampled by thousands more outside the doors, like black friday, when they open.

Why is there this belief that Red is unlike other manufacturers who roll out new products?

Let's face it. Those who get the Epic-X upgrade for $10.5k will be spending upward of another $35k for a new brain with higher DR and larger sensor size in a year or two's time in the shape of the Monstro. They will likely have to sell their epic-x for a loss to afford that upgrade too.

Fair enough you don't have to buy some of the other bits that attach to that brain but canon or nikon would be laughed at if they released part of a camera that cost $35k.

And what after Red have brought out the Mostro line up? A year or two after that we'll have an even better epic brain that'll cost another $40k for Redusers to update too. Even if you go the Scarlet route you might be talking close to $20k once you've upgraded to the monstro version.

With Red's upgrades we're talking the cost of houses here. Canon and nikon's offerings by contrast will be affordable to many average joe's on the streets.

Put this way. If Canon or Nikon do up there game a bit the Epic line-up could be severely dented. Suddenly Red could look like a very expensive company to remain loyal too.

And let's not forget that Red's tag line was "Making obselesence obsolete" when they first started out, yet here we are about to shell out a few more thousand dollars for an upgrade less than two years after purchasing the original camera. My brother who is a photographer has spent far less on his Nikon kit than I have on Red related purchases in that time.

That's not too say that I'm not looking to buy/looking forward to Epic and scarlet because I am. But in the interest of balance such a point should be made.

Paul

If you are really in a position to buy and constantly upgrade Epic class cameras at all, you are likely to be producing enough work that they pay for themselves over those time frames. They are priced in the upper middle pro digital video camera market range. Just because a new one comes out doesn't mean the old one is automatically useless either. It stays in the inventory as a backup or B-cam or gets sold used to someone for whom it is still a step up. They won't be dumped in some landfill.
Same is true of the prosumer level gear too.

My current DV camcorder paid for itself on one project and has remained a useful production tool for 5 years despite being "obsolete" .
Short of consumer TV formats making some radical shift I don't see even an entry level Scarlet 2/3" camera becoming obsolete to the point of uselessness over a similar timeframe. 5 to 7 year product life is a practical expectation.
