  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Two Weeks... Change is COMING!!

I'd steal your identity first, have some fun, and then erase you.

Could you erase me? ...Just erase, that would be good. Then I could disappear and shoot with my RED and no one could find me.

Cineform do not need an SDK. They can already read the Red file format. All they need is Red to stop telling them they aren't allowed to!

Even if the SDK is delayed, there is no reason to hang Cineform out to dry any longer.

I'm sure some companies (Avid, Adobe?) are waiting for the SDK, but others who are more into the RAW finishing workflow thing (Iridas etc - they support practically every other RAW camera from Phantom to SI2K to Weisscam) probably don't need the SDK either - just a file format specification document (which Red has already, I'm sure) and Red's blessing.

Interesting to see what happens in the next few months!

I've heard of least one rumor from a pretty good source that AVID has a workflow. Not sure how raw centric it is but they appear to be on top of the situation. It would be a joke if AVID puts up a better workflow than Apple given that Apple has had preferred access for a year or more. That would be just about enough to get me to switch. I want companies that are timely... ok, more than timely. AVID blew a big lead but lucky for them Apple appears to be iPhone focused. Adobe should by all rights blow everyone else out of the water. They are the creative software powerhouse.

If Adobe can leverage their CDNG format that they've recently announced to be the format that R3D files are converted to, then I expect them to keep moving along smoothly.

i seriously don't see how you guys stand cineform..

Akube, I wonder what's gone wrong with your machine. I've used Cineform for some time for many projects and I'm very pleased with the software. Also their support works well and both Davids talk technical details in clear words. The instabilities I've noticed tend to trace back to Adobe/hardware, not to Cineform.

The SDK won't be out until Build 16 is released.
Build 16 is not released.

I won't hold my breath, but I'll sure cross my fingers, legs and whatever.

If Adobe comes out with native support in two weeks, I think they'll start getting the respect they deserve. It would boost sales a ton. Although, I hope it is a free update.

Doesn't it take some time to write the code into your applications - after - you get the SDK? I thought SDK's were the first step in writing software?

And why can't Adobe just upgrade Premiere or AE products as they do with Photoshop and Lightroom when new cameras are released?

I would hope for all of us RED users that AVID (and all Autodesk products) will soon be able to support the RED as they are still major players in the post industry, (for those of us who don't do all the finishing in-house).

I guess it's all good.

I never understood that. Maybe some Mac-phobic coders at first. But in reality my new Mac Pro is the fastest Windows platform I ever owned (and I have built dozens of Window's PCs).

Right now the primary reason is that Apple does not support SDI output on NVidia video cards.

mac dosn't support nvidia sdi out.....

it's not mac -phobic coders...mac makes it hard (probably cause it's so awesome)

also wonder why there is no photoshop 64bit for mac cs4?
no maya 64 bit for mac?
syntheyes 64 bit for mac?
redcine 64 bit for mac?

Anything with a GUI cannot run 64 bit with mac....sounds like intelligent coding

mac is very cool, but the marketing is so awesome.... mac users thought it was the bomb when they were on motorola processers

cineform had 4k raw (from r3d converted to cineform raw) wayyyy back...maybe january

iridas figured it out as well

august 1 may be the release of the SDK,
and it may also be the date when exclusivity with apple is fulfilled.

Well ... what they "figured out" was how to take the recorded frames and debayer them - with their own algorithm - which is NOT the same as RED's debayer.

Different results.

And somebody may use that - and say "it looks great" or "good enough for me" ... but you know ... did you ever stop to think that it might not be good enough for Red.

Iridas and Cineform never played r3d material with exactly the same quality and results as Scratch does with Red's RedNode for Scratch.

Assimilate doesn't debayer R3D any way they want - they debayer with the Node from RED. You download that from the RED.COM/support page

This is something that so many people fail to understand.

Horses for courses...

That's a huge part of what makes this extraordinary moment in the history of the medium so truly revolutionary.

Iridas as *the* raw and debayer DI expert & pioneer offers excellent quality.
They used and supported raw a longtime before anyone else, and do not support only a single raw digital cinematography camera, but all of them.
ARRI D20/D21 .ari
S.Two RAW (.dpx)
Cineform (.avi/.mov)
DALSA Origin 4K RAW (.dpx)
Phantom HD/4K (.cine)

Silicon Imaging SI 2K/SI Mini (cf .mov)
Weisscam HS-1 RAW (.wcr)

Regarding REDCode RAW (.r3d) woth speedgrade, the -internal- versions of speedgrade applications support REDCode RAW files directly, as do several discreet products.

As RED choose to prevent all Softwares besides Apple Final Cut and Scratch to support REDCode for postproduction, as editing, visual fx etc until red published their SDK / fileformat, the internal redcode enabled speedgrades are not deliered until redspostproduction software embargo will be lifted with the SDK in August.

Mike Most brought up the biggest obstacle to porting Scratch to OSX - but it's entirely possible to run Scratch on WinXP via bootcamp. I've used it that way, and it works great. I'm guessing the connection to XP is also that Assimilate personel has at least some of its roots in 5D's Cyborg, which was a revolutionary WinXP / PC real-time film rez playback and compositing system in its time (early 2000's).

One of the hurdles in developing pro-apps like Scratch on OSX is that Apple operates a very controlled development and makes its decisions based on what is overall best for it as a company, which quite often conflicts with what is best pro-apps and the pro market.

Look at the DI systems market, altogether. It is a niche market, for better or worse, with offerings from:

Scratch - Windows
Nucoda Filmmaster - Windows
Baselight - Linux
Pandora Revolution - Linux
DaVinci - Linux
DVS - Windows
Quantel Pablo - proprietary(?)

*EDIT*: I left out IRIDAS, which does run on OSX.

Don't get me wrong - I like OSX, and think Macs are fantastic if you don't need to do anything special that Apple doesn't already do. If customization is required, then Mac can be hit or miss.

being that i am a customer....no
I don't usually stop and think about what Red thinks of footage I shot with my camera.

Maybe we should slap on a proprietary lens mount so only...the best lenses can be used, so as not to embarrass Red with our poor lens choice.
