Hi,

I'm planning on using two new red bricks to power a red epic dragon. I will also be using two RedVolts (1 charger) as well for backup and battery changes.

Is this enough to be 100% powered on?

Also I don't like the price of the red charger so I'm planning using a Swit charger, anyone know if this one will work with red bricks?

I would suggest a minimum of 3 batteries. There are often times where you won't be near power or something won't charge correctly or you'll need to power accessories or lights with them in a pinch. I have 5 Red Bricks and if I had any less than 4 I'd definitely be at a disadvantage sometimes. I have 4 RedVolts as well for other uses.

No it's not enough. Three *should* get you there (barely), and if you only have one charger overnight, you're going to have to wake up to swap batteries to be "fresh" again the next day.

Not sure about Dragon, but MX is 75Wh for Epic and 60Wh for Scarlet *without* any accessories (monitors or modules) attached. That means for the 130Wh Redbricks, you're going to get 2 hours max per battery. 2hours on the charger might get you 80%, then you'll be at 1.5hours, then 45mins... it's not enough. Even three probably isn't enough unless you're charging two at a time.

And redvolts are, realistically, only good for hot-swapping v-mount/ab-mount batteries.

Honestly, you're much better off buying four 3rd-party v-mount batteries than two (or even three) REDbricks.

I got by with two 190Wh bricks for a while, but it was definitely a juggle and had to resort to using my revolts for main power, which most of us won't recommend. I would say four bricks is a good investment. I personally have six and that has been serving me pretty well. I still charge dead ones whenever possible though. I really like Switronix batteries. The usb port on the side next to the dtap is lovely.

Yeah, I got two initially and it's not enough. Get a minimum of three.

Anyone got any tips for third party v-locks that's cheaper and better than the Red Bricks?

We use PAG batteries, we have a mix of their 96E and 96E batteries. The great thing about the PAGS is that they can be stacked together, so you can have 2x together to make 1x 192WH battery.

They are individually below the 100WH legal size for flying, you can keep 1x on your Camera and then Hot Swap another to it. Lastly you can stack them together for charging, the travel charger is very small and light and can charge 4x batteries overnight.

Yes we we also own a bunch of Redvolts and nearly always use these in our cameras too.

We started with Red Bricks (too big to fly with) but now have PAGS and I honestly think they are the best battery tech out there at the moment.

PS: 2x Red bricks are a great start but not really enough for shooting all day long, it's great to not have to worry about power when there's so many other things to think about on a shoot.

Thanks,

Obviously not the answer I was hoping for haha, better to know now I guess. The sit charger at the least is a duell charger but will it work with the red bricks?

I do already own one red brick (a third one) but it cuts out without warning at 20-35%. I use this a lot to power monitors etc. But with a redvolt I'm guessing I could potentially use this as a buffer incase the other two fail. Is it possible to get a battery fixed anywhere? Its an old RED One Vlock?

I will try my best get another battery squeezed into the budget.

Thanks,
Rupert

If you're on a budget I would go with Global Media batteries and get more batteries than go with RED's batteries and have fewer. For the price of 2 bricks and a charger from RED you could get almost 4 160wh bricks + charger from GMP. GMP also has a new Buddy Battery system which I would recommend going for if you ever ship or fly with your camera. I started buying a bunch of 90wh batteries since shipping is illegal with anything larger.

I can't find any Global Media batteries in the uk. I will try and look more.

Weirdly Red Bricks are not an expensive option especially when considering the 15% discount I get on them. They are actually cheaper than most third party options. There are a few options that are cheaper per wh but not by anything close to as much as 2vs4 bricks more like 2vs2.5 The red charger on the other hand is hugely expensive hence why I'm trying to get away with the swit one.

This is the cheapest brand in the uk,

This is the cheapest uk option of a similar wh. There reviews aren't great

Edit: But yeah I think ill bite the bullet and buy another Brick.

I regularly use 3 Red Bricks and sometimes 4 on a 9-5 shoot. With charger I cycle 3 bricks a day.

Im doing okay with 3 but I think 4 would be perfect for an 8 hour day.

I've had this Global Media Pro charger for almost 2 years and it's great! Charges 4 Red Bricks simultaneously. Great price too. The difficult part in purchasing was having to buy in Euros, paying bank conversion and money transfer fees, etc. They didn't take credit cards when I purchased. It has been worth it though.
I would say 3 batts are a minimum. 4 would be better.

I have 2 Switronix dual chargers and they both charge my Red Bricks just fine.

Thankyou! I'm ordering with CVP now so will see what they suggest from their stock as a charger. Ill let you guys know their suggestion.

David, that charger is awesome value I'm considering that instead now. Iv allready put my request for a quote in but ill check that site out. Thankyou.

These are amazing for the price. They have bigger and smaller W/h than these as well. Only downside is that it doesnt show what "percent" battery you have left, only the volts or whatever. so you can still tell how much battery you have

I Run 3 bricks, 4 redvolts, and do alot of run and gun stuff. It's usually fine, but ideally i'd say 4 bricks and 4 volts

Hey guys,

I'm just starting out to kit an Epic Dragon.

Because of blackshading and time for sensor to reach a certain temperature (or so I read around here) do you guys keep the camera on at all times during a shooting day? So I need to take in considerations buying bricks in order to keep the camera on for a long time?

Thanks,

Andrei

With 4 red bricks if you are careful you can get through a full day. You have to get the used batts on charge as soon as you swap them out. It doesn't give you anytime for your batteries to cool before you charge them so it means you are working them really hard.

Global media you order directly from China / their web shop.
