  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tutorials for Newcomers to Premiere Pro

Since most of us are moving away from FCP, we won't use soundtrack pro. Is premier it's own sound program too or is there another piece of software for audio masters? Is pro tools still viable in an adobe workflow?

With quite a few people switching from FCP to PP the two questions I get asked, aside from just RED-centric workflow, tends to be to do with 'working with sound' and keyboard shortcut mapping. I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate a video that illustrates and how to switch to FCP shortcuts default mapping and to add your own. I know neither of them are directly RED related but they are both what I get asked a lot.

The primary ones have been mentioned above though.

You can easily round trip between Audition CS5.5 and Premiere Pro CS5.5. Adobe revised integrated Soundbooth and otherwise revised Audition heavily with CS5.5 and it is a pretty neat solution now, although I am not a sound person myself and am only commenting from a limited perspective. ProTools is still the industry standard though - most sounds departments will ask for OMFs which are easily exported from Premiere Pro CS5.5.

Thank you Brad, you are the hero,I salute you, thank you for posting this tutorial videos, very help full.

He's actually getting married today!!!

Hope you had a wonderful day Brad and an even better honey moon!!!
And got some beautiful shots too ofcourse!!! :))

No Probs Scott.

Just wanted to apologize to you guys waiting on more follow up tutorials. Between getting married and have a ramp up in work I've found myself with almost no spare time to sit down to plan and record some more of these. You guys haven't been forgotten though! They will come eventually :)

your tutorials are one of the best I ever seen, hope you will get some time and put more of them

Tutorials, thank you so much. These are hard to come by and very appreciated.

If it hasn't already been discussed, possibly in your first post it is coming up, but as I am learning the Red workflow, it is in adobe premiere, may or may not be colored, what settings/how do I export for file base in the highest quality for viewing? With that, what settings would I use to output the 4K material to Blu-Ray? I did a straight from premiere to encore to bluray and it did not look nice, I am missing something. For me now it is the exporting and output options for 4K which I am missing. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

Thanx. This is great.

Any thoughts on sound in Premire CS5.5 is there anyway to incorporate it?

Yes, look at this post for detailed instructions. If you're on a Mac, also look at the post below it. It's a bit of a hack, but it works perfectly. I'm using it.

NOTE: before you do any of this, download and install the RED EPIC Importer from Adobe Labs.

Brad, been watching the videos and learning a lot. One question I have, what kind of sequence presets would you use for mixed footage? If you were to mix 5d and Epic 5k footage what kind of timeline would you use? That is one thing I haven't been able to really get a good answer for. Also, final output would be for Bluray.

Edit: And why isn't this thread a sticky too?

Hi Guys,

Just added two more tutorials - one on a workflow between RedCine-X Pro and Adobe apps that maintains RAW data the whole way through to grade (eliminating the need for transcoding)

Also added a quicktip on achieving background rendering. I realise that this one isn't RED specific but it should help any people using After Effects (and that includes us Red guys :)

Hi Ben,

This is a really tricky question to provide an answer that applies 100% of the time. There are a few different factors witch would affect my decision. The primary consideration would be the shooting ratio of footage (5D vs EPIC). If it was only the odd shot that was on the 5D then I would be opting to create a sequence matched to the EPIC's frame. Alternatively, if it was 50/50, then I would be inclined to use a 1080p sequence.

There is one small caveat I have found recently in testing export settings however. When using (say) a 5k sequence, it's very quick and easy to create draft exports at lower resolutions. You can simply go and export to say, 720p, deselect "Max Render Quality" and Premiere will do a 720p debayer on the R3D (as opposed to downscaling a 5k debayer). This makes export times much shorter (especially noticeable if you're not using a Red Rocket).

On the other hand, if you are using a 720p sequence (that includes downscaled 5k footage) and try the same procedure, you will find that export times are actually higher. I believe this is because Premiere is forcing itself to do a higher resolution debayer > then downscaling (regardless of whether max render quality is or is not checked). I would love to be able to have a chat to some Adobe Tech guys to try and work out what is going on under the hood there.

If you suspect that you will be needing to do many draft exports, and render time is a major concern for you - this may be something to keep in mind :)

Matrox MXO

Matrox MXO

Hi there Brad, thanks for this thread.

And a shout out to Liam, I grew up at copa, great place, miss it alot.

Brad we just purchased the matrox mxo2, we get great output to our plasma from premiere, works great,
but from afx it's letterboxing our 16by9 footage to like 2:1, makes the picture squished with black on top and bottom.

Wondering if you have any experience that might help us out fix this problem from afx.

Thanks
Troy Smith

Hey Brad,

Just giving a big tip of my hat to you for making these. They are incredibly helpful even for the seasoned among us. I'm just popping into the edit bay again after a month, and very thankful I found these by chance.

Number 4 will be sent repeatedly to anyone in my workflow. Seriously, I can type it all I want, but the video is a perfect companion to workflow setup instructions for parties involved in a project.

Cheers amigo.

No Prob regarding the thread Troy :)

Unfortunately though I have no experience with using external monitoring solutions in AE. I'm assuming you have already tried adjusting your settings under: Edit > Preferences > Video Preview ?

Glad to hear that it will be useful Clay. Much of the info in No 4 is redundant if people have watched through 2 and 3, but I figured it would still be useful for giving a small overview in a nutshell for people that don't have time to invest in the other tuts :)
