  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Trouble's Brewin'

April 14th will answer a lot of questions, and I agree, possibly anger a lot of people. Whatever they release will most likely be pretty darn cool, but who knows if it will be targeted toward me.

Nice first post.

Oh, and about your English, don't worry it's better than mine and I'm American.

Never Back Down

Never Back Down

"Its gotta end with you lookin like a bitch." quote from Never Back Down, the movie.
The "you" in this case would be either Sony or Red.
Scarlet has to be a knock out punch. If Scarlet is too pro, then Sony can wait, copy it, and make it prosumer and sell it to the prosumer market which is way bigger than the pro market. Ka-ching. If the Red team decides that 5.1 audio and auto focus are not pro, then Red is leaving themselves open for Sony to deliver a finishing kick to Red's groin. I hope Jim doesn't turn into an elitist camera snob. Keep it real and make it tight for the masses.

Germans are so analytical. Me, I try not to think.

I think Germany is where the catch phrase "Show Me" originally came from. hehehe.

i just don't see any trouble brewing.

you cite 3 classes of user, but i think there's only two...who needs an expensive camera for youtube? the footage is instantly degraded, and with so many great fully-equipped sub-$1K HDV cameras on the market already, why would they bother? the only consumers who will care about SCARLET are people who would want to pay up for fine equipment anyway, good home theater systems, good wine, and if they want it, they will pay for it without concerning themselves overly about the cost. so there's really no disgruntlement brewing at that end that i can see.

most high-end consumers that i know are still trying to get their arms around making the switch to HDV and tapeless workflows and the attendant processing and storage issues--why bite off even more of those issues with 2K footage?

and make no mistake, this will be a 2K or higher camera, because why would RED bother competing in the 1080 space? that makes no sense, not when sony and panny have very good offerings in that now-crowded space already. slap a 35mm adapter on an EX-1, and you have a very good image at a very good price. and 35mbps which meets a higher-end standard for broadcast.

i'm betting that based on the form factor and the high data rate, that sony may already be chewing into some of RED's potential user base, especially among the documentary and EFP users, many of whom need less weight and more mobility (and audio pots!) in fast-moving environments.

we always assume that RED is putting the hurt on sony--because they are, on the cine end--but the EFP and broadcast space, which has a larger user base, is still very contested, for the reasons that i just outlined. you can read all about it in non-SCARLET threads....

what RED can offer in SCARLET that isn't already out there is 2K and 35mm--those will be the advantages of SCARLET. those will be the things that pull in the users.

the existing RED user base will be thrilled to have a mobile, compact B cam. and the EX-1/HVX folks will either decide that those upgrades are worth making some adjustments to the SCARLET form factor. or not.

you have quite a few indies already tricking out HV20 cameras and making a sub-$1K into $5K cameras. the same thing will happen with SCARLET, on an even grander scale. RED will make all kinds of goodies to make this possible, just as they have with the RED ONE.

SCARLET will run mean-and-lean for cranes and tight spaces for cine people, and it will also be easily converted to a steroidal version for the indie/RED light crowd...

so that, with the right accessories, you won't recognize the camera from the base original SCARLET...and you won't recognize the original price, either!

just like the rest of us RED ONE users...extra top mount, extra rails, extra handles, extra extra extra....before you know it, the size, the weight, and the price will double. no one will mistake you for anything but a pro!

trust me, you'll love it!

Okay ... I am going to spill the beans ...

SCARLET is just a clever dis-information campaign.

It is really ... an iPhone killer.

Wait ... there's some lawyer are on the phone ... I have to go ...

it actually has been a clever dis-information campaign, if you think about it...

after all, RED mentioned a 4K monitoring announcement and SCARLET in the same breath, and no one has made even modest inquiries into the ready-to-be-announced 4K monitoring system.

meanwhile SCARLET has its own standing room only sub-forum and an angry user base already lined up to complain about their disappointment 3 months before NAB....

As someone about to receive my Red, I don't understand why the existence of any other camera device made by Red or anyone else would disappoint me. The Red is what I want, at the price I want. If Sony suddenly started making an 8K camera and selling it for the price of the Red, I might envy the technology and those that have it - but for the reasons I initially reserved a Red, I would still be happy to have the Red.

Anyone concerned that a new technology might diminish the value of their Red package is probably missing the point. I say bring it on, let the best creative mind make the best creative use of whatever technology suits their design.

Yeah. (I'm not getting a Red One just yet) but I was about to say pretty much the same thing.

The only thing I could possibly imagine would upset a Red One owner about Scarlett would be if Scarlett had identical specs to the Red One, was "pocket size" and cost half as much.

But we already know she is not "competitive" with Red One, so that is simply not the case.

I personally am waiting for details on Scarlett because even if it's a lower end product than the Red One, the specs might still fulfill my personal requirements and be more in line with my budget.

Otherwise, I'll make the stretch and get a Red One... and I'll be happy with it! There is no comparable (electronic) camera at available at ANY price. I mean the purchase price of the Red One body is comparable to a couple weeks rental of a Genesis or Dalsa. And it's almost as good (better in some ways... it just depends on how you want to look at it) Neither of those other cameras is even for sale!

Meanwhile I'll toy around with my DSLRs and HV20. Get my DP skills to a higher level, and try to finish some of my scripts!

You know, "Obsolescence Obsolete" rhetoric aside, the Red One is still just a tool. And a tool in a market where the state of the art in the tools evolves so fast you have to be pragmatic about the useful life of the product. It will become obsolete eventually. It might be 2 years, maybe you'll get 5 years out of it. But the point is it WILL be obsolete eventually. It's only matter of time before either Sony, Canon, Panasonic, (some other company) or Red themselves release something that supersedes it in price an performance.

It's up to you to have a plan to get enough use out of the cam during it's useful life. You can't blame Red or anyone other company for pushing the state of the art, even if it leave you high and dry. It's the only way they can stay competitive and drive the state of the art forward.

I would not say it's trouble brewing. Anyone whose used a computer for more than a few years should be familiar with the pattern. You use the tool that is available TODAY (when you need it) and you upgrade when a better tool becomes available. (or don't upgrade. It's up to you. If your older tool still works for you keep using it!)

DOF is still as effective on the web as in any other medium. In 2 years the network will be so fast that huge files will be watched online streaming. The whole HD DVD war was fought on a false assumption.

I have a PS3 and BLU RAY is great, but it will not win against HD downloads, they are just too convenient end of story.

wait a few years not only are the physical formats changing. the way that content is made and distributed is changing as well.

Look at Heroes, Nissan payed for allot of that show. there is tons of product placement and the website is plastered in adds.

the wed is a way for program makers and big company's to get together and make something that will be of a high quality and available as a download when you get home from work.

TV guide is so yesterday....

there is no campaign at all......so why a dis-information campaign ?

Okay ... I am going to spill the beans ...

SCARLET is just a clever dis-information campaign.

It is really ... an iPhone killer.

Wait ... there's some lawyer are on the phone ... I have to go ...

Lawyers don't phone you.

They usually send you a stern-sounding (and usually, legally meaningless) letter of demand in a large brown envelope, often personally delivered by a professional process server or a private detective, or at the very least by some sort of priority mail system.

Compared with actual legal action, this tactic is very cheap and alarmingly effective, particularly in cases where their demands would get them laughed out of the courtroom if they tried to make a real case out of it:biggrin:

If the recipient is wise to the ways of lawyers and points out that their stern reprimand on company letterhead actually has less legal validity than the butcher's bill scribbled in pencil on the corner of the meat wrapper, they will often issue a second letter invariably containing a somewhat hurt-sounding suggestion to the effect that their client must "now consider his or her options".

People of particularly mischevious bent have been known to respond with further a suggestion to the effect that, as for what said client can do with his meaningless implied threats of legal acton, possible options are vaseline, K-Y Jelly and bacon grease:bleh:

if you want a youtube phone then get one of the AIPTEK HD cameras- 720p and pocket sized for 150 bucks- saw them at Circuit City for 100 bucks.

I bought one to replace my mini dv camera that got stolen- is it the best camera in the world? No. Will I feel bad throwing it off a roof for a great low-budget shot- Hell-No!
