  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tron: Legacy.

So, finally got to see Tron. Soundtrack worked well in the context of the movie, as well as in isolation. The soundtrack is still my fave part of the movie.

I was less impressed by the story, and rather put off in places by the face replacement. Some of Jeff Bridges' dialogue was indistinct which made the movie hard to follow in places.

The stereo was a lot more subtle than other stereo movies I've watched. I thought that would be a good thing, but upon reflection, it seems that unless stereo is over-done it's actually to subtle to be worth the effort of the glasses.

Costume and design were great.

Now, what was really nice was the trailer for Pirates 4 before the movie. Nice to see it in stereo!

IMHO, the stereo was TOO subtle, so much so it wasn't worth the extra money. I was begging for more especially in the light cycle scenes, and the flyers. As for story and dialogue... I thought it was pretty much like the original, if not better, but I guess the originals always get more forgiveness.

It's easier to forgive hokeyness on an 80s movie than a 10s movie.

Graeme

Absolutely. We wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for the 80s :-)

I was jazzed going in and depressed going out. I was expecting a lot more from the 3D but it was literally non-existent. There was a few shots where I could discern some type of very minimalist 3D action going on but it just wasn't done right in my book. I can get by with the story, though I pretty much knew it wasn't going to be anything too exciting or radical when compared to the first Tron film by the time the pre-screening reviews came out. I remember how great the non-cannon sequels were that came out several years ago so I was expecting something cohesive along those lines. But I guess we'll just have to take what we got.

I definitely agree. I thought the soundtrack was awesome, but definitely some of the dialog was hard to hear which did detract.

EDIT: Also, in the theatre we saw it, we were continually being told to put on and take off our glasses during the previews and pre-show ... so much that i felt a bit like a lost sheep at some point...kind of irritating.

I agree that underdone stereo is a waste of money. And the virtual actors have improved but they're still firmly in the uncanney valley. My biggest gripe with Tron was the fact that so much thematic territory was ignored in the script. I mean, God is trapped in his own creation and his progeny (organic and virtual) are fighting each other, competing for his approval. You could drive a truck through that hole in the plot.

I wonder, if you a took some random person who lives in the woods and has only seen a few movies in their life, and didn't know who Jeff Bridges was, and you showed this person TRON Legacy in 3D, would they have any idea that the young Jeff Bridges was CGI?

I loved this movie. I liked the understated 3D. I got a kick out of Jeff Bridges character, a perfect cross between Yoda and The Dude. I LOVED that girl played by Olivia Wilde :001_tt1:, not to mention that smokin'-hot blonde in the white body suit. I'm sold on 3D.

I don't know if they'd have thought CLU was CGI, but they would surely notice something "not quite right" about it? Agreed on the costumes though :-)

Funny, I saw Tron around Christmas with my sister and we were both so stoked to take in the whole stereo experience. We both felt it was too understated throughout most of the movie. Furthermore, I really think seeing the amazing 3D from the Pirates trailer before the movie highlighted just how minimal the 3D was in Tron. The Pirates trailer was perhaps the best 3D I've ever seen. Granted it was only a 2 minute, fast edit snippet, but it was jaw dropping in my opinion.

The POC trailer does look really damn good. I still stand by the best 3D is anything underwater or flying through the air. Despite how mediocre the story looks A Turtles tale looks to have some incredible 3D in it. I know its an animation but I think the winning selling point about underwater is that something can come out of the screen and it can hang, suspended, and it doesn't look forced.

Yes yes! Been digging back through Daft Punk lately now.

funny you say that, the vfx time that did the face for clu and young flynn was the identical team that worked on benjamin button for brad pitt. i guess it's easier to make someone look older rather than younger...

The uncanny valley is not going to be crossed easily. We spend all day, everyday studying the human face. We are mostly experts at discerning emotion through body language. Coupled with the fact we know its not real. The irony is that the skin, hair and lighting was perfect. The likeness was pretty perfect. But we aren't sold.

I think there were two issues issues with Clu. Firstly Bridges is not naturally very animated when he talks and he appears almost robotic at times. That's one of the reasons he was perfect casting for Starman.

The second is older people are far easier to realistically animate weight maps on the saggy skin helps to conceal and sell the idea. A young Jeff Bridges was not going to be an easy task from the offset.

One 3D aspect of the movie I did like was keeping the 80's intor section in 2D, and then jumping to 3D when he got sucked into the computer... it hightened the transition to a different universe.

But I agree the 3D usage may have been a bit too subtle. I quickly tire of "in your face" 3D that used just because "they can", but this may have been too far on the other end of the scale. Gotta strike the right balance... I think Avatar hit it pretty well.
