I have a new Oconnor 1030Ds system (the 509 wasn't cutting it) and want to put together a solid travel platform. I've been looking at a few different options. The Tuffpak's, the HPRC's and the SKB versions of the Tuffpak. I'd like to have the soft case fit into some sort of shell but there are so many size options now it's hard to know what's perfect with ought trying them all. Does anyone have a setup like this they can recommend? Thank you!

I use the Portabrace TLQB-41XT . The case is 40.5 inches and is 2.3kgs. You will have to see which one you want to take because if the shell or reinforcement is more then it becomes heavier. I carry my case by flight and no issues.

The HPRC linked is what I've been using since I picked up my 1030D/30L combo a long while ago. The case is built like a tank and travels well. Not the lightest weight thing out there, but if you plan on using this head/sticks combo for the rest of your life it's a good investment.

I had some goofy bag with a stick that I've seen others use. Tried it for 5 seconds. Couldn't stand it.

Phil, I searched for the HPRC "linked" and I couldn't find anything. I feel like an idiot haha! is that reference to something else? Sorry for the ignorance. It seems the HPRC 6300 series is could be the one?

David, There are so many other options for much less that "seem" to offer the same protection with better features like wheels. The SKB knock off of the same style case rolls and is only $170. 9" inner diameter and 37-42" tall. Seems like a solid better over the Oconnor brand TuffPak. That said I'm sure it's a great case too.

HPRC 6400TRIB, same one Matt linked to.

I ended up going with the Occonor brand Soft bag for $300 from BH and the SKB case for $200 on amazon. It's a perfect fit. Really happy about the setup.

Just for the record...

When you travel as mach as I do, and the Tripod gets handle by any one and every one but you, form Airport to Airport, and or form carrier to carrier or truck to truck...

Simply put... SOFT bags are shit!!

Always stick to hard cases, and try to make sure the Tripod system (with Fluid Head) is also well padded inside.

I also have been suing the HPRC brand cases for years, proud that they are mad win Italy and I visited their factory, but that aside, they are super well built, and with some added internal custom padding I found NOTHING else as good and safe for the gear.

In the pic below, you'll see I had two standard hard tripod cases, and two HPRC cases, the system on the other two cases where damaged as well as mot of the gear in the soft cases, while all the gear in the HPRC and Peli style cases arrived safely.

Belt and or straps can brake easier then anything else, and one of them is not enough, where a series of double latches and a well padded hard case is what is needed, the fact that they are also floating capable with a buoyancy enough to float with the gear inside is an absolute PLUS in many cases as it was for me several times both in my Venice shoot and in this one.
