  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tripod System Suggestions

There are def risks of overloading a tripod.
I've had the displeasure of experiencing it.
I also noticed a difference between a Sachtler 15 and 20.
I had the 15 on CF sticks (mid-spreader) for years and one day decided to try the 20 and wow, I felt more secure.
The 20 is def way overkill for my base setup.
Maybe just in my head but from the pan/tilt alone I can tell the diff.

Thanks, but I was wondering if there are issues with underloading a tripod?

I don't feel there is as stated with my Sachtler 15SB & 20S1.
Other than resistance on the actual head.

Please can you let me know if you think the Vision 100 would be suitable for a rig that is typically 8.25-8.5lbs? There are other options that are apparently a better fit for this weight range (e.g. 8 or 11) but I haven't been able to find any of those used, or with a mid-level spreader.

I'm not sure what the dangers are of being beneath the recommended load limit and can't find much info about this.

Depending on the counterbalance system of the head, if the payload is too light, then you can end up actually fighting against the head when tilting(the head will want to return to center, instead of staying at the angle/exact position you tilted to).

8.5 lbs is well below the rated payload window for that head, but there are other factors besides just the raw mass that affect it. The vertical center of gravity and horizontal weight distribution play into the payload capacity, too(it can be more or less, depending on these factors). If you look on most of the manufacturers websites, they have graphs illustrating the weight/payload window vs. center of gravity for each of their heads.

Thanks for the info.

I guess I should have added in the initial post that the rig is pretty light (although I do sometimes use lenses as long as 400mm, which obviously need greater stability), since suggestions like the Vision 100 (and maybe 100mm systems in general?) could be overkill

Would like to ask if anyone here has any suggestions for a flat base head. Not overkill like an Oconnor, but one that would work best on a medium slider setup (4 to 6 feet).
Using the Cinevate Duzi is not the best with my Dragon and the CamTram kit is way too much for some upcoming projects.
Too top-heavy with a Sachtler on a bowl adapter with the Duzi.
I want to get the flat-base first before hunting a medium slider.
There seem to be a lot of those for sale in the wild.
