  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Transformers 4 Trailer @ Super Bowl Epic MX + Dragon

Did Shia labeouf get axed ? I cried for two weeks when I found out Megan fox got taken out.
I believe Mr. LeBeouf voluntarily chose not to continue being part of the Transformers franchise.

Not a question about Transformers 4, but does anyone know if Neill Blomkamp's latest, Chappie, is shooting on Dragon? I heard they were supposed to start filming either already or very soon.

DP on Chappie is still Trent Opaloch, so there's a good chance, though he had shot Captain America 2 on Alexa and Epic.

How much is being shot using the digi-IMAX systems? Short of the 1.44 ratio (which doesn't matter until the 4K projection systems become a real thing), what's the benefit of those modified Phantom's? Same resolution as the other formats, less than Dragon. Would the 65mm sensor really make much of an image quality improvement?

It's not really my place to guess how much of each of the different cameras footage will be used. All of the primary cameras (Epic, Film, and IMAX) were used a lot, and often at the same time, so you'll see a mix of everything. As I previously mentioned, Epics were the primary camera.

The IMAX camera was a completely different beast than the 3ality rigs with Epics, both have different strengths and are usually used for completely different type of work. Because of the fixed IO on the IMAX camera, it excels at big vista type shots, whereas the TS5s can easily capture a closeup. (On The Great Gatsby we also used TS5s with Epics. We did one shot of Joel Edgerton smoking a cigar, where his face was practically up against the mirror box, not that that is great for 3D, but it's less of a problem when you can adjust your IO)

I see. Thanks, Steve.

I'm totally blanking on what "IO" signifies, though. I don't believe I've heard the abbreviation before.

Very interesting to read Steve! Few if any movies have a better image quality than Transformers so must have been fantastic to work on!
What kind of setups do you use with the Epics? What lenses, what dollies, etc. Just interesting to know it all! :) How long hours do you normally work on these mega shots?

Best

Fantastic images made by an unbelievable camera. Oh how far you've come, RED. Can't even imagine what the next 8 years will bring.
Congrats!

Don't you mean Vision Research?
The linked article implies 60%+ was shot with the imax 3d package, re-purposed phantom65s.

Given, shooting narrative dialog driven scenes with the imax 65 film cameras is a painful experience, this is still a big step backwards for large format film making. Around 12k-16k from a 15perf 65mm neg, to maybe 3k from the imax digital camera once you crop to 1.44:1 imax.
Not very immersive.
It will be interesting to see how dragon footage cuts up against the phantom65 footage which has pretty limited dynamic range.

60% is being presented with extra information in an IMAX showing (ie, aspect ratio), it was not the primary camera used for the movie. The majority of the movie is Epic MX on 3ality TS5 rigs. There is also some film and of course some footage from the IMAX 3D rig. And as has been mentioned we got the first Dragons so those started working a lot too.

Jarred, do you know of any of these big FX films that are finishing at 4K, with 4K VFX?

This is being finished in 4K with 4K VFX. That was one of the reasons that it was so important to start with high resolution to begin with.

I hate watching SciFi movies, tech news and sometimes even scientific news, they can get too close to reality.

I saw the film yesterday. Only a few scenes actually had 3D and it ranged from really well done to "Is this supposed to be 3d? I can't tell!". The standout 3D shots were mostly bits and pieces that lasted no more than a few seconds or a continuous effect like the "ash" scene when Lockdown kidnaps Optimus and there are CGI particulates in the air that jump out at you. The film was wonderfully shot but the execution of the script (or maybe just the planning of certain scenes) was not so great. There are a lot of head-scratching moments with the KSI/Galvatron/Stinger/Transformer Drone/Transformium/Seed part of the story and a lot of it doesn't make sense, so I guess it wasn't well written or much of it was made up on the fly. They should have just set it up in this first film and made it pay off in the final film of this new trilogy.
