Hi everyone
I am trying to take certain look profiles that were made in Red Alert and Redcine. We were given these looks and told to put them on the camera to prepare for an upcoming shoot.

It was my understanding that you transfer the .RSX files and/or the .RCC files onto the CF card and then import the looks in the camera menu, however the the camera is not recognizing that there is any look profiles. It tells me "None Available".
Also if I make any changes under the video settings in camera such as saturation, contrast, etc. and I try and export the look file via the export menu I get a message saying "No media insert SD card and try again"
The camera will record to the CF Card

Originally I thought the camera would not recognize the look file because it may have been built on an older version of RED Alert and the camera is on Build 16

I am on Build 16 3.2.5
Red Alert 3.38
Redcine 3.1.2

I would appreciate any help on this issue. Im sure There is a simple step I am missing.

Currently you cannot upload looks from Red Alert or Red Cine onto the camera. The only thing you can do is create a look IN CAMERA using the camera menus (color, contrast, etc.), save it to the SD card and transfer it to the rest of your cameras. Apparently this feature is coming in the future though.

Thank you for your response.
Perhaps I may have misunderstood if this was a working feature.
Ill be looking forward to this feature when it is implemented.

I have also tried saving looks from the camera with the card inserted but when I go to export from the looks menu(from the camera) I get a message saying
"No media found insert SD Card and try again". The camera is recognizing the the card however it will not let me export created looks.

Any ideas as to why I would get this message

Is your SD card you are try ing to record to bigger than 1GB ?

As for the transferring the looks, make a note of the values of the color adjustment parameters in Red Alert! then type those into the corresponding camera menus.

Wow, I really hope this isn't the permanent solution

Actually I was just using the Red cards (8GB) to try and export the look profiles.
I was under the impression that this was the way of transferring the different looks created in camera.
Should I just use standard SD cards under 1GB in capacity?

Thanks alot for the information Im just trying to make sure I understand the limitations of this feature as to what I can and cannot transfer between the camera and software.

Ive searched all over the net regarding this issue and surprisingly very little info shows up. Again I appreciate any info on this issue

This isn't really what you are after, but it may give your director some peace of mind on set. If you have the time to batch render some ProRes files on set on a MacBook, it can quickly show the director what can spit out the end of your pipleine. This is a way to apply a look to clips batch rendered with RedRushes. I apply a slight s-curve when batching ProRes files, but to each their own -

1) Open an .R3D in RedAlert and apply the curve you require, and any other changes you want applied to every clip in your RedRushes batch render.
2) Close RedAlert. In Finder check the R3D folder you were just working from and you should find a new file with the extension .RSX – this is your "look" file.
3) IMPORTANT: Move this new .RSX file elsewhere (I personally use the desktop). You can rename the file so it is easier to find later on, but don’t use any spaces or special characters. For example, I named mine S_CURVE_REC_709.RSX. (Under RedRushes 3.5, all your rendered clips will come out white unless you move the .RSX from its original folder).
4) Open RedRushes and import the .R3Ds you want to batch render with the new "look". Under the “Render” section set “Look Source” to .RSX. The .RSX settings panel should now appear down below. Change “.RSX Source” to “Selected .RSX”. Leave “In/Out Point” as “Ignore”.
5) Hit the “Select .RSX” button and find the look we created (and moved) in Step 3.
6) Set the Colour Space, Gamma Space and everything else you require under the other tabs and hit start. The "look" will now be applied to each rendered file, giving the director a sense of the final colouration on set.

Choose a low resolution render and these should spit out fairly fast.

In achieving a curve, I believe I have to use the Tone menu in-camera, and then increase/decrease the Toe X and Knee Y, correct? I don't think RedCine provides visible numerical values for the curve (the way RedCine gives numbers for Contrast, Saturation, etc.). Unless I'm missin' something.

No. REDCINE won't provide numbers.

But apparently if you use REDALERT and tweak the curves, there is a corresponding number that can be applied via the tone menu in the camera.

Haven't tried it yet, but another thread suggested it.

Wicked. Can't wait to try this out...

Ah, I'll just have to experiment with Toe and Knee numbers in-camera then. I don't use RedAlert (on PC). Unless someone cares to post the numbers for a sweet curve on here and we can use that. :-)

Nope. We're working on a unified look file format for camera, sdk, RC, RA, RR, etc.

Once this is out (especially if it is transferable between software via the SDK to other post software applications) it will be the final dagger in the rest of the camera world (for the time being anyways). Once the SDK has fully kicked in and the AVIDs, Baselights, Final Cuts, Adobes, Pablos, Autodesks, etc. etc. etc. of the world all work natively with .r3d, and once Daenan and the magic pixies create a fully transferable look protocol (two way, both from camera, and from the say, baselight, into the camera), I would then predict that over half of the commercials I work on will shoot RED, if not more.

Even as things stand, an obsurd amount of commercial productions in my town are shooting RED, and the above stated technology will only increase the ease of the workflow, and decrease the cost to production. This will be the magic bullet for RED's BIG breakthrough. Don't get me wrong, RED has had a great year in 2008. But 2009 is going to be the real breakthrough for this company, and it's camera(s).

The commercial I am sitting on right now is shooting RED. So are my next four. And I love it.

No problems Steven. This method is essentially a step-by-step guide I wrote to help simplify the following thread. Saves the amount of colour correcting and adjustments you have to do in Final Cut if you are working from ProRes files.

Nope. We're working on a unified look file format for camera, sdk, RC, RA, RR, etc.

Good news. Will it be a nice and detailed LUT? Or just the very basic controls we have in the camera now?

I assume that those same files will work in SCRATCH without modification or difficulty? It'd be great to have a more streamlined way of creating looks at the cart on set and have those remain in post after a transfer.

the director i was working with today colorized 4K TIFFs in Adobe Lightroom, and wished he could put that exact look on his dailies. When we can put his 'look' file into RedCine, etc. he could have. Even better, once AVID, FCP, etc. support .r3d native and the 'look' file, he could have the look that he created in Lightroom applied by the editor, and then the same look applied at the color facility in their Baselight, and again, used as a starting point for the final color grading.....

That will be awesome. And game changing...as much as the camera itself.

The camera will record to the CF Card

I think you may be confusing the CF card which is the large card which slides into the left side of the camera, and the SD card which is quite small and slots into the underside near the front of the camera.

The CF card is used to record video.

The SD card is used for settings, etc.

I also can not write look files from the camera to the SD card. I get the same message. I'm using the 1GB SD card that came from Red. Is this working?

Thank you for your response.
