  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Trailer for Coming Through The Rye

Looks good, but the trailer needs a major rework. Too long cuts and disjointed. Tighten it, use more L-cuts and the part when he says "Mr Salinger" comes right before a kiss which almost made it look like he meant to kiss Mr Salinger.
Hope you or the one in charge of the trailer have time to rework it a little.

As the Cinematographer I'm hired to create a look and then make sure the images are planned and executed the way the director and I have imagined them. From there I follow the images through grading and output at the post house to make sure they are consistent.
How they cut the trailer or film is up to them and I'm not around for that part of the sausage making.

Yes, I know that :) I just felt I need to input about it since I've produced trailers for five years now and I'm sorry to say that everyone is affected by everyone on a production. Bad editing sometimes holds back great cinematography because the images feels disjointed together. I think your cinematography is great, especially like the images close to the end, but a better trailer editor would have created a heightened emotional layer that would have put your images in a better light (no pun), if you know what I mean? :)

True enough! I think that after a while as a DP one learns to focus on the things one has control over and accept those things that are someone else's responsibility. It makes life a lot more pleasant. Once it's out of your hands and realm as the DP it's no longer your call. I've also found that trying to impose one's will where it doesn't belong or possibly stepping on a director's vision is actually more detrimental to that person in the long run then how a trailer is cut.

That caught my attention as well, except it looked to me like he was saying, "If I kiss this girl, will that change your mind?"
