  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Top Handle vs. 5" Touchscreen

I don't find any of these solutions elegant. I know it's stupid, but I need to have a good looking camera and the mount of the LCD makes everything harder.
I will personnally go for the Wooden Camera Side Handle, on the right side with the LCD mounted on it.

But I won't use the Red Side Handle on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree. I'm not a fan of the built-in mount, I wish it was an optional accessory. Seems out-of-step with RED's recent push for versatility and modularity.

I've mounted to the LCD to the Rosette Accessory Attachment bracket, FMJ Top Mount, and Sliding Top Handle. My issue with all of these configurations is that you're locked into the position. If the AC needs to switch sides or pull from behind the camera, the monitor can swivel, but the new position might not allow them to tilt to the appropriate viewing angle. Because of this, I prefer to mount the touchscreen to a short Ultralight arm.

My personal preference would be for a touchscreen without a built-in swivel base. Interestingly, the 5" Touchscreen on display at RED Studios Hollywood has female mounting-point on the back of the LCD similar to the 7" and 5.6 LCDs. In my opinion, this would be preferable.

Has anyone made an adapter to allow the touchscreen LCD to be mounted on a standard Noga arm so the AC can get it where they need it? Seems like a simple mod.

A bit of a hypothetical question since you can't plug in the LCD and EVF at the same time right now but that is another issue...

i can't seem to get my rosette off my sliding top handle. how do you get it off? do i need to use a torx wrench

Yeah, they're really tight. Myself and 3 others tried to get mine off by hand. Finally had to put it in a vice.

@ Paul - the touchscreen LCD can be mounted to a standard arm. You don't need an adapter.

Here you go:

This is a great setup, Michael. What kind of V-lock plate is that?

Here are two of my configs, the first using a mini cheeseplate from Wooden Camera, the second using Wooden Camera's older sliding cheeseplate with 12" carbon 19mm rods and IDX v-lock with speedy clamp.

Seriously, are you dudes superhuman or what? I've been trying to unscrew that thing for two days now... I've completely mashed the rosette, scraped the metal to hell, and twisted the rubber so it looks like this:

..R R R ...
.....E E E ...
.........D D D ...

Yup, I totally voided my warranty this time... And Nothing... I can't get it to budge. Dammit I need a vice!!!

Quick question: can you also unscrew the rubber "RED" handle as well? I need to mount it on the other side.

For some reason my Sliding Top Handle shipped backwards with the 4/20 holes pointed to the back, and the thumb screw at the front. The exact opposite of this:

I need to mount the rubber handle on the other side, but I don't know if it unscrews as well.

Any experience unscrewing the rubber?

Try a blow torch; seems you have used every other heavy object. ;-)

You could have simply mounted the top handle and used a wrench on the flattened parts of the rosette part, or attached a dog bone to the rosette and turned it like a handle.

Just my head... and blunt will.

I have one seriously mutant, backwards handle... trust me I need a vice and explosives...

...

But seriously does the rubber handle screw off too? I've ordered some TNT but won't bother if I can't screw the rubber handle to the other side.

We ended up buying the old-style 19mm universal mount on the top rods to pull the LCD towards the back of the camera and allow the sliding handle to face forward (we generally have on pretty heavy glass).

Works great! Though we are still investigating other solutions :)

Seems RED should have thought about how hard it is to mount this stuff when they designed it.... I'm having the same issues.

The biggest beef I have is with the swivel mounting "system" on the 5" LCD. I really wish they would have kept the simple tapped bottom like the old LCD.

Once I get my side handle and Redmote, I'll probably shit can the 5" monitor. Yeah it's great that it's touch screen, and nice and sharp but the ergonomics of the mount sucks. It's too bulky and unmanageable. I can mount any other monitor in any position I want and keep a low profile. But this guy....

Sorry. I had to get it off my chest.

P.S. I would LOVE it if Red came up with a re-design of this LCD with a simple threaded bottom. PLEASE?

Never mind. I finally beat the damn thing. Yes the rubber handle will screw onto either side... problem solved.

Gotta hand it to Red; they make tough shit.

I just put that rosette to block hoo-ha (can't remember offhand what the store calls it) and now I get the very important third axis of positioning for the monitor. I'd send I pix but I'm on my phone at the moment and can't low res it enough for pasting..

There is Loctite on the threads so will take a bit of force. I used a shifting spanner on the flat part with foam in the jaws for protection.
The thinking is it keeps the rosette locked at a correct level so any attachment like the rosette block will always mount level to the body.
Break the lactate and you'll always have to tweak things for level. no biggie tho

I don't remember the name of the part but its from RED. it mounts to the 19mm rods and has a rosette with a small cheeseplate. I'm really happy with the way it works.
