Top 10 Red Epic Questions exclusive VIDEO Interview with Ted Schilowitz - A MUST SEE!

Thanks so much for this. Amazing job.

Fabian! impressive! hehe. I didn't expect anyone to notice. It is indeed a Red Arowana. When it gets bigger I want shoot it in 5k hehe.

Ha! I cared for a number of them at a zoological institution a while back-- they're impressive animals, especially when they reach their optimum red coloration. It's sad and unfortunate they are now endangered in the wild.

But back to topic. Congratulations on landing the interview, Tonaci. And regarding that arowana footage in 5K... I think I might just hold you to it.

Cheers!

Fabián

Just back in LA... we had a really good time all over Asia showing off the Epic. Tonaci is a total rockstar, supporting so many RED projects in Vietnam with such great success... and he turned that interview around pretty quick (the power of REDCODE and the RED Rocket in action :-)

another favorite moment for me during the trip was connecting up the 1080p HD-SDI output to the Barco projector during the presentations at InterBee, and showing the live output of the Epic on that big screen... then taking the lights down, and taking the ISO to 6400 and then 12800 to show how amazingly clean the images are at those ratings (and of course showing off the touch focus, and the HDRx™ images on the big screen was pretty fun too :-)

Awesome Ted! I hope you can get a rest after your trip!

It would be great to see such a demonstration in a down-loadable file. I know that it could not possibly compare with a live Barco viewed demonstration, but it would be illuminating nontheless!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like we can only run a RED LCD or a RED EVF, but not both, off the brain.

Perhaps it was just wishful thinking but I had imagined there would be two 14 pin Lemo taps with independently configurable display parameters. For example the operator could tailor the RED EVF display by toggling off all status info they didn't want and the 1st could customize the LCD screen to select 1:1 image magnification (perhaps even with the focus assist color edge), plus histogram, battery level, etc.

O.K let's back up.

Consider the overall size of an EPIC + (Pro or Basic) I/O module as your "i/o connector" equivalent of a RED ONE or an ARRI Alexa...

(EPIC does much more than either of course) From that combination, you can support two LCD viewfinders or one EVF + one LCD style.

Now take it back down to a Brain only. We still support an EVF or LCD viewfinder, plus we have independent HD-SDI and HDMI outputs.

So I'd look to one of those two connectors to do what you are asking, if you didn't have an I/O Module.

So two red lcds at the same time via pro or basic I/O. Sweet! Thanks for the info Stuart

One quick question.. can you do two red touchscreen lcds at the same time? I'm assuming yes but want to ask to make sure.

Tonaci,
Well done. Thanks for arranging, conducting, and posting the interview.
Cheers,
Harry

InterBEE 2010

InterBEE 2010

Ted mentioned that one of his favorite moments was connecting EPIC via HD-SDI Out to the 2K projector. Thought you'd get a kick out of seeing that!

First image is Ted, of course, holding the tethered EPIC, second shot is with the lights at 50%, shooting at 6400 ISO, last shot is with the lights almost all the way off, with EPIC set at 12,800 ISO. Pretty amazing stuff!

Good interview, thanks Tonaci.

One thing I was confused about was the compatibility of the Epic with the existing LCD screens. Ted mentioned that the 7" Pro screen is compatible, but the 5.6" may be not due to different resolution. But, according to the Red Store, both have the same resolution and both are marked as compatible.

Can anyone clarify?

Hey Tonaci, thanks for sharing this...this is the most epic coverage I have seen to date. I am really considering reducation. Thanks TED, hope to visit Vietnam one day. Hit me up if your ever in Brooklyn NY, a round on me. Cheers.

Hi Clay,

If you have the time, I would highly recommend Reducation.

Some highlights from the last REDucation:
Day 1 is the day in which everyone gets on the same page, from beginners to working pros. Day 2 involved hands on shooting; the students split into groups and had to shoot in various setups and lighting scenarios, all of the footage is then projected on a HUGE 4K screen and then exposure is analysed from a colourists POV. You quickly learn how critical exposure on the RED is - get it wrong and the MX sensor will save your ass but leave it with a "video look" get it right and you emulate film - truly a fascinating session. Day 3, more Theory and more practice, brain starts to hurt - but in a good way :P. Days 4 and 5, another brain overload on workflows from set to post, from indies to blockbusters. Best practices, recommended kit, The "Caboose" effect, etc....

Those were just some of the highlights for me but there is so so so much more. You will leave the week with a full notepad, a spring in your step and a big grin, knowing that you are prepared for 99.9% of shooting scenarios except helicopter and deep sea diving - there wasn't a helipad or diving tank :P.

What added so much weight to everything you learnt was the real world experience that the lecturers and teaching assistants had. From DPs like Eric Trageser to Digital Technicians and DITs such as Von Thomas, Jack Mosor and Stephen Lovett! Michael Cioni has DI'd more projects than most have had hot dinners - ok maybe an exaggeration but he is on top of his game and what he doesn't know about the DI process you don't need to know! Then you have Ted, the mouth of RED, a truly nice guy, with a razor sharp mind, who has a real passion for Digital Cinema - which is quite infectious. There was quite a debate between Michael and Ted in one of the sessions regarding the exposure of a particular shot from one of the groups. In short the exposure was not as good as it could have been and Ted and Michael proceeded to explain how they would have approached rating the camera and exposure. Both of their methods would have yielded "correct" exposure for the given scene but it gave us students, the insight into more advanced exposure practices - which was only possible when you had people who eat, sleep, and breath their profession.

All of this adds up to an amazing learning experience for you.

I don't work for RED or have any affiliation with them. I just attended the August class and wanted to share some of the experience. Here are some other responses from the last REDucation class.

All the best,

Hello and Thanks for the Interview!!!

My dream is to make this in my own job!!!:drool5:

Hi Jon, it was great to meet you in person this InterBEE and see a real, working Epic :)

That live demo with the lights out was indeed rather amazing (who's that gaijin up front, hehehe?!)! Crazy to think that it's the new 16bit pipeline helping the MX sensor resolve such colour detail in such low light!

It was also great to see the Japanese Red Reel (I was humbled by how much of my footage made it in - thankyou!). Such a shame it wasn't able to be played on the big screen. Maybe next time....

Hopefully I can make it to LA to pick up my Epic in person and say g'day, when it's released. After seeing it at InterBEE, I am chomping at the bit!!!

Okaeri (welcome back home) from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Thanks for posting Tonaci. Great to see and hear some candid interviewing about the Epic. We're all anxiously waiting to get our hands on it!
