I was just wondering if anyone has shot at a lower resolution on the Monstro or Dragon VV sensor with any of the Tokina Cinema Vista primes. On these two sensors, there's quite an image circle difference there with 5K being almost right on with S35 3-perf, and 8K being Vista Vision. I'm needing to know how they perform in general at 5K. I want to be able to switch from 8K to 5K at times in order to gain higher frame rates without having to switch out to an S35 lens.

Thanks

Did you consider renting a couple of Tokina Cinema Vistas and doing the test yourself? Quite a few rental houses offer those lenses. Also, most rental companies allow you to bring your camera to test lenses they rent.

Hi Jamie

They are ok for most resolutions on a Monstro I did this test with tokina, supremes, sigmas and signatures... however they shine when using more then a centre cut.

there is a maybe a point (often due to focal length) where you may want to swap out but 5k should be fine. I used to sometimes jump to Ultra16 lenses with our red1 for the same reason.

Ps also I suppose the question is what would you jump to... if you have a set of sumiluxs-c or MPs sitting around then maybe it is worth it.

PPS If you where shooting a green screen job at 3k that would def be the point I would consider a jump if I had MPs or similar available

They are a pretty modern design that I use frequently, they hold extremely well at S35. They actually cover beyond VV if you're very curious.

Tokina Vista primes maintain full 300° focus rotation at 5k. They also maintain a full 144mm front diameter so they can mate to your matte boxes with needing a donut.

No Joke, optically most stunning set of spherical lenses on the market.

If you “like them” in vistavision, you’ll love them in S35 - there is no compromise there, in fact they come in traditional S35 focal lengths while maintaining their high speed. The way they handle human faces is just yummy IMO, no lack of detail but nothing ugly in their draw.

This is sort of a no compromises basic s35 spherical set (consider superspeeds which don’t have a 105 and you’ll see what I mean) except they cover vistavision+ and are still T1.5

I would not be mad at a 27-29mm and a 40mm in there, but who knows. On monstro I find myself on an 85mm a lot more than I would think. This is the vistavision effect haha.

You can try mine any time at : www.cslarentals.com in Los Angeles

Yes the Tokina are in my opinion the best lenses you can buy for any s35 camera and or the VV Monstro which they shine on.

From my very first test was obvious that Tokina where up to something great with this lenses.

I love that they are incredibly sharp yet maintain nice skin rendering, I love that they have absolutely NO breathing and I love that they are solid build and that the Focus Marking with their generous rotation are very precise and brightly written.

The size and weight must be a consideration for some hand held and gimbal use, but been used to the Master Primes, I find this not an issue at all, and sold a set to a friend that mostly uses them on Gimbal.

PS: Shameless plug, I do have few sets for sale here http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...L-Mount-Lenses-as-Brand-New-500-off-each-lens :)

First Prototype Tokina lens test during the first intro at NAB few years back.

A pic my friend Matt sent me of getting the Tokina set up and ready to go on his Gimbal.

Wow, so much information and great advice from so many. Thank you so much to all!

I wanted to feel warm and fuzzy about this because I want to purchase a full set between 18-105mm. I did a fair amount of research myself but wanted to hear from a few who have used this set on both VV and S35. I watched one test with the Cinema Vistas on a Raven and it looked stunning there. And then Phil's initial test video with VV using these primes was (as always) very stunning.

I have always been partial to S35 and love love love the master primes but in moving to Monstro, I'm looking in general to simplify with one set of lenses on a shoot. I want to start shooting primarily in VV but for high frame rate and some narrative work, I love the 5K WS on DSMC2 not to mention that its the sweet spot for the S35 size. So having a lens set that optically performs well at both VV and S35 is of great value to me in switching between the 2 size formats on a regular basis, without having to modify matte box configurations and such.

You love, love, love Masterprimes? Really? Its interesting hov different taste can be. I have used them perhaps twice since switching from film and will never use the again now that there are Leica Summilux.

It is funny how taste varies between people haha. Its all good though. Different perspectives and variety keep everything wonderful.

Yeah,
We all differ in our vision and flavors of imagery creation and the tools we chose to do it with.

I used to love the warm look and feel of Canon lenses for over a decade in photography, then I started shooting s35 film on Master Primes and the images felt really cold...

But once I used them few times I went and purchase my own personal set because I fell in love with them.

No I find in the Tokina close to that same level of image capture in a different housing.

So till I can afford the Zeiss Supreme Prime set, the Tokina is my go to set :)

Just to echo what everyone else has said here, they are great at S35 or VV. We purchased them when we got the Monstro and love them. I often switch between different resolutions for different projects. I have never found the image lacking as a result.

One other quick question... Do they tend to hold their fast T1.5 in the S35 range on Monstro?

One of the things I love most about this lenses is actually the capability to hold extremely well wide open at T1.5.

Oh and Speed does not get effected based on Sensor side in which the lens is used.

Coverage however does, as more or less of the actual Optical elements get used till a certain circular edge based in the actual size of the sensor they have to cover and their factory diagonal coverage, which for this lens is huge.

Some would say that this allows this lenses and other FF to be used in their best center of the lens elements, but I like to also see the lens used as it is intend and don't mind some of the artifact of their design.

Except breathing, which this lenses do NOT do :)

They will look spectacular.

I have the Sigmas, and am a sigma pro, but have used the Vistas. All of these lenses produce so much more resolution than a 5k sensor at S35 can render.

The Sigmas out resolve the 8k Helium at S35. I'm sure the Vistas will do the same.
