does anyone have experience with the Tokina 16-28 cine?
Full frame might be good for 8k helium?

I have very recently. It actually can cover 8K VV even. Had it up on the 8K S35 Helium for a moment too.

Overall if you have the cash, I'd likely recommend the Zeiss 15-30mm T2.9 over it for Helium, but if you are looking for something in this range with proper gears and all that, this is a decent choice.

Thanks Phil,

The Zeiss would be nice but out of my price range.

You don't sound too excited about the Tokina.
I'm looking at it cause it'll cover 8k Helium and gas a proper cine housing.

For the cash I'm pretty excited for sure. I just know which wide zoom I'd prefer in that focal length :)

If I had to rate them:
- Zeiss CZ 15-30mm T2.9
- Tokina 16-28mm T3
- Ruby 14-24mm T2.8 (isn't a T2.8 btw)
- 11-16 much, much lower on the list for me

What makes me more excited for the Tokina is that it covers an even larger format even than the Zeiss CZ. So that's a pro there for me. Optically however I prefer the Zeiss.

thank you Phil !

I haven't seen anyone really discussing this lens and it seems like it might be useful for small independent films.
I wouldn't expect it to compete with a lens $20k more.
However it is full frame and will cover the 8k helium sensor.

Honestly if the Sigma 18-35 covered the 8k sensor
we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Awesome lens in that price range.

Any Cinema Lens Zoom is going to be expensive, even more so if it's 70mm... those are Hawk, Panavision, Zeiss CZs

Helium is s35/APS-C... what ever u want to call it -- and the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 shouldn't crop the Helium Sensor as it's a s35 sensor... it's a APS-C lens

you'll need Full Frame or 70mm Lenses for VistaV, not Helium

on a side Note Zeiss is releasing a newer S35 Zeiss Zoom for like 10k

Jeff,

The 8k helium is 33.8mm and the Sigma 18-35 has a 28.4mm
image circle. It's well established that it vignettes.

Phil,

Have you run into this flair issue with the Tokina when a Practical is in frame???

My problem with the Tokina Cine lenses is that they don't have a Nikon mount option. Other than that, I've been loving their non-Cine lenses. For crop, the 11-16 2.8 is of course a go-to wide and if I needed it, 16mm on full frame only. For full frame, the old 28-70 2.6 is wonderful and one of the sharpest zoom lenses I own! My brother and I have been talking about it and if we need a dedicated full frame wide, the non-Cine variant of the 16-28mm is our choice. I can't speak for how the Tokina Cine lenses look on Helium or VVeapon, but I wouldn't imagine there would be a problem with the 16-28mm as it covers full frame, that's just my take on it.
