I'm confused about the crop factor of the Tokina 11-16. Is the crop factor of an EF lens the same as an EF-S lens?

Tony, I meant the Canon mount, thank you. Thanks also for the link to that test. It doesn't look nearly as wide as I imagined it would.

My Tokina 11-16 covers the whole sensor on 4k of a Scarlet, slight vignetting around the edges when you stop down. So there is cropping, the lens at 4k is more like 17mm-25mm.

Edit: I am talking about the http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=554035&Q=&is=REG&A=details

I don't know much about the duclos version if that was what you meant =)

No crop factor. The Scarlet at 4K is super 35 sized. This lens was designed with this size of sensor in mind. So 11mm is 11mm. 16mm is 16mm.
Vigneting on the other hand is a different issue altogether. Different from crop.

EF vs EF-S is actually just a different mount (EF-S lenses from canon use the white dot instead of the red dot, and those lenses are allowed to reach a little closer to the actual sensor -- though very few actually do). Crop factor happens not because of the lens, but because of the size of the sensor in your camera.

EF-S lenses are ONLY designed to fit on smaller sensors (around S35 size) like on the Canon T3i / 7D. Otherwise you will get vignetting. EF lenses will
fit on any 35mm or smaller sensor.

So what you're asking isn't about the Tokina lens (which is only designed for S35 or smaller sensors, which the Scarlet is using). But about your sensor in general.

The answer to the question I *think* you're asking is:
The Scarlet in 4K mode uses a sensor size about that of APS-C (canon t3i sensor) or about a 1.6x crop factor. So comparing to what your view angle you would get with a 35MM sensor,
you can compare it to a 17-26 lens on a canon 5D.

The Scarlet in 3K is probably closer to micro-4/3, which is about a 2x crop factor. So if you stick that lens and turn on HDRx at 3k, it'll give you a field of view similar to
a 22-32 lens on a canon 5D.

The Scarlet in 2k (DONT DO IT!!) is close to 16mm film.. 3.24x crop factor...

Phil wrote this whole thing up in a BEAUTIFUL article that you really should read :) http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet

I'm paying $15K for a sensor smaller than that in my 5D? I need to wake up.

you ordered one without knowing that?

Its s35 sensor not a FF like the 5D. Your paying for a RAW digital cinema camera with 13 stops of DR that shoots 4K footage and 5K stills. The FF sensor's from RED should be coming soon which you can upgrade to in the future.

This may come off rude but it isn't intended to be...

I did indeed. There is much I don't know about the camera but I'm learning so quickly is staggering sometimes. Part of the comfort of being at Reduser is that I'm in good company in that regard and can count on help.

no worries, and trust me once you start shooting you will never go back to the 5D for video. Crop factor also wont bother you much once you start using it. In due time you will be enjoying a great camera, one that cant be compared to others by price or specs...

All the best!

I have got to point out that the RED sensor is NOT a crop sensor.
The standard in motion picture was set more than 100 years ago. The film gate size in a motion picture camera hasn't changed, since it was constrained by the 35mm film negative size running vertically through the camera.
That size is what RED uses for 4K.
The 5D is a still picture camera. The 35mm negative on a film still picture SLR went through horizontally, allowing for a much larger area of the negative to be used by a frame. That's what the 5D is. A still picture camera that happens to do video. It is not the standard in which other motion picture cameras should be compared to. Yes, it's a larger sensor, but NOT the standard for motion picture.
So, the RED sensor is not a crop factor. I hope this clear it up! :)

I, too, think it's odd that you'd drop $15k blindly (the shipping specs of Scarlet, especially sensor size, were available on Nov.3rd). You should probably start reading the post-production (hardware and software) subforum too or you'll be in for a rude awakening. If you aren't using Premiere 5.5 your best bet would be to invest the $700 and get it (it's double that for the entire suite, but it includes AE, Photoshop, etc.), otherwise you'll be spending hours upon hours transcoding to a more NLE friendly codec which simultaneously gets rid of the RAW advantage by baking in image attributes.

ALSO, audio on Scarlet is NOT plug and play; phantom power isn't enabled yet and no NLE works at reading the audio from the RAW files (although you can hack/trick PProCS5.5 into reading it.)... OH, and 120fps at 1k isn't enabled yet either and HDRx at 24fps is limited to 3k max at the moment .... I don't mean for this to sound mean, I just dislike seeing threads saying, "camera/audio is broken" by new Scarlet owners when, so far, almost all of those threads have ended up being user error.

As for the 11-16, as others have said, it works a treat!

Hey Mike.. I was aware of the issues with phantom power and the unbalanced audio but not aware that none of the NLE software is able to read the audio. How are you and others working around that? Are you recording audio to an external source to sink later?

I have a Epic -X and full cover in full 5K with my canonmount. It's a apc lens ef-s.
