David asked me about my top 5 things I love about EPIC... ended up being my top 20.
Thought I'd share the conversation.

Mark,

I know you have shared your excitment about your EPIC-M a lot here.
Can you share top 5 things you love about EPIC?

David

Top 5?... let me think.

1. Size is small...
2. 5k is massive.. 73meg @ 16bit per frame!
3. 13 to 18 stops is ridiculous
4. Pushing out hi end TVC's from my laptop in a hotel room is dream.
5. 1/2 the price to it's nearest competitor and shoots 4x times the image size and is 1/4 the physical size!

On set top 5.
1. I shoot from a mono pod.
2. Camera is small so I can hand hold alot more. (not shoulder mounted)
3. It's ridiculously fast to use.
4. It's light to travel with.
5. I don't need any camera crew when I want to personal or pickup shots.

Post production top 5.
1. I can shoot this and transcode quicker than using my 5d (which I have retired forever)
2. I can grade real time on set as quick as I can get the SSD into a Reader.
3. REDLOGFILM is fricken awessome! ... and I can blowup any of my shots by 400%!
4. Nothing keys or tracks better than RED EPIC images. nothing!!!!!
5. I can do everything in my laptop if a post house decides to root me.

Personal top 5.
1. My camera sits on my desk next to me with my favourite lens, a 50mm.1.3 super speed. I just pick it up and shoot in 8 seconds 5k @ 120 fps.
2. I can be far more creative with my shots because I can now shoot 4x quicker due to the cameras size and speed of use... coverage is king.
3. Showing clients 5k on my cinema screen in my office, I love watching there mouths drop and hearing the same thing everytime... fuck thats clear!
4. I will now shoot my movie with 4 small cameras working from backpacks. My small movie will now look like a big movie shooting across 4 countries at no extra cost.
5. I make shit loads more money using this camera.

lucky last... I can now pull a still frame from my moving footage that can go onto a billboard! or a doulbe page spread in a top end magazine!

Jim should shout me dinner! actually... vice versa!

The "lucky last" as a footnote, it's pretty huge... it increases the potential market to a segment that no other "cinema" camera has. So Red sells more units total, increases sales, R&D, accessories, etc. Makes camera better for everyone.

Your should see the clients faces across the board room table when you tell them that!. I have one (very large) client that has made it company law that all TV ads produced for his company have to be shot on the EPIC because of this feature.

Sounds awesome....what about a bloke like me new to RED and the workflow, I can shoot and edit no worries on FCP with my current cams but now need to abandon it for a total new edit system? (Premier CS 5.5?) I doubt my brain is fast enough to keep up with the advances in technology these days.
Any chance of a breakdown for the easiest way for a solo operator to create the best images possible, will have coin to spend but brain cells are somewhat diminished........Please help the indies.

In a word, no. You don't have to abandon FCP. There is a proven workflow. It may not be the best, but it works. Read the Apple workflow section for tons of info. To narrow it down, search for Michael Cioni on that forum.

Mark, what are you cutting on in that hotel of yours?

FCP... :), Compositing in Nuke and AE.. grading in Resolve or FCP with Saphire. (thats my hotel room workflow) Flame & inferno comes into the picture when I manage to leave the hotel room and get myself back to my own country.

So many ways to post.. but the secret is to make sure you work with a color neutral / white balance neutral REDLOGFILM export. Wether it be DPX, PRO RES, tgas, RAW... what ever your fancy.... Then its so so easy from there on in.

Hi guys,

I've been getting stacks of private emails from this post, not sure why you don't want to comment through this REDUSER, because some of your comments and questions other people would love to read... does not matter how silly or novice they sound, there are alot of people here that will help you understand the ease of it all.

Plus you'll do me a favour as email is getting smashed. REDUSER is far easier for me to respond to quickly, Thanks guys.
