Mark, it seems that the real art in lens making comes from the coatings. Anyone with the right tools can grind a precision lens these days but without great coatings to reject flare and internal reflection they aren't much good.
Actually I believe it will be wear and tear that's the true tester. To produce lenses is possible, but to make them withstand the craziness of our business is a completely different thing.
I think time will tell. It will be 1 to 2 years down the line that we'll see the real winners. Work horses like Zeiss lenses are not that easy to build. So we'll see if there's lenses that needs service more often then they're out. Focus gears that are getting stiff and/or lenses getting backlash etc.
It is BIG words calling them COOKE S4 killers considering the design of those lenses. Optically is not IMO all about resolution and mechanically the S4's are astonishing. So you really got me intrigued, but I will leave my verdict in a year or so.
