  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Today at RED ...

Mark, it seems that the real art in lens making comes from the coatings. Anyone with the right tools can grind a precision lens these days but without great coatings to reject flare and internal reflection they aren't much good.

Actually I believe it will be wear and tear that's the true tester. To produce lenses is possible, but to make them withstand the craziness of our business is a completely different thing.

I think time will tell. It will be 1 to 2 years down the line that we'll see the real winners. Work horses like Zeiss lenses are not that easy to build. So we'll see if there's lenses that needs service more often then they're out. Focus gears that are getting stiff and/or lenses getting backlash etc.

It is BIG words calling them COOKE S4 killers considering the design of those lenses. Optically is not IMO all about resolution and mechanically the S4's are astonishing. So you really got me intrigued, but I will leave my verdict in a year or so.

I dont think it is that hard to believe that these (the ones mark tested)
are 100% S4 killers..
the real question is...
will the sets people buy in mass, be of the same build quality.
I know they spent along time on this particular set...

I believe they will provide the same quality and optics to the masses.
Cooke and zeiss pump them out slow, because they probably have less people working on them..
RED will have more people working on them, hence... getting more of them out faster.

Believe it or not, we know just a little bit about optical coatings. We have had electron beam gun vapor deposition equipment for almost 20 years.

Hi Jim,

So is Oakley is in some way involved in the coatings?

Best,

Stephen

Stephen... Oakley is not doing the coatings on the RED Primes, but the knowledge gained over 20 years has been leveraged heavily in this program. I personally started the lens coating program at Oakley and championed the development over the years. But talk is cheap... we have not heard one complaint about the "look" of the 18-85mm RED zoom, which is the 1st lens to showcase the coating technology.

Today's coating of still lenses are all very good

but for a cine lens the coating is just one thing in a (overall cine lens) pot.

I'm with you on this. It's exciting to see RED driving innovation and shaking up the lens market. I have no doubt the RED primes will be good. I have an 18-85 and I'm pleased with it. But I don't know how well it will hold up over time. We'll see. Then again, it's 1/4th the price of a Cooke.

I'd love to see someone like Matt Duclos weigh in once they come in for service. Not to put you on the hot seat or anything Matt ;)

I'm not worried so much about the lens coating.
What concerns me the most is the lens Codeine.

If these lenses will be as sharp as claimed, lots of people are going to cut their eyes. Lens Codeine will dull the pain.

("Do not look into RED lenses with remaining eye!")

Fredrik,
Well said. No knock against Mark OR the forthcoming Red lenses (heck, maybe there is a set in my future), but calling them "S4 Killers" is indeed bold. I'll personally continue to collect S4s. Serviceability, ruggedness, usability day in and day out all count. So does resale value. But maybe we are entering a new paradigm where, like consumer products, "pro" gear is cheap enough to buy spares and simply chuck the old stuff rather than repair... and certainly, for a large group of Red users, there has been a hole here.
There is more to it than just a still image or the performance on a projector.
Remember Evin's "guess which lens" thread? Modern cinema lenses ALL closely resemble each other and the differences are mostly "flavor".
It will be great to have another "flavor", just as the Red One itself is a "flavor" of imaging. We can choose Red, D-21, Genesis, or F-35. We can choose Master Primes, S4's, or Red Pro Primes. And that choice is good.
Cheers,
Harry

id be interested in reading your biography... when can we expect it? :)

p.s i dig what you've done with your website

I like the all swallowing red mopar design idea, but my favorite shots are the center pic of the guy with no helmet and the Army driver warming up tires while saying hi to Jannard.

Favorite shot though has to be of the dog. Is the whole page designed by Jim?

I'd love that MJ pic hanging on the wall of our studio...
