  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To buy a Scarlet or not to buy, that is the question…

I'm glad that Philip has put together this review. It makes total sense and is from a non biased stand point. It exposes all the serious pit falls of the Scarlet in a very diplomatic manner.

Basically, the Scarlet is amazing if you're on a low budget feature film ($100k) or medium budget adverts. Other than that, it's not a great work horse. The only usable frame rate is at 4k and possibly 48fps at 3k. Higher fps than that, the windowing is just ridiculous, and you'd need some 16mm glass.

Not the camera for me at all. It's either an Epic (can't afford that right now), or an R1, which IMO is still the superior camera to the Scarlet

A 4K - 4.5K workhorse is the REDONE. EPIC/Scarlet require to work on beta products.

For the Full HD world, Z1, EX1, F3 are workhorses.

I've read through this whole thread and the blog post.

Philip bloom is a pro and posted his experiences with the camera.

He says what many people have said for many years.

RED is a state of mind.

You don't grab hold of an EPIC and think point and shoot. YOu think. I am holding a serious tool. There is an aesthetic to shooting RED which is hard to understand if you never shot film. It's not a pick it up and go tool (unless you are an experienced professional who knows about exposure, raw image capture, and the way to get the most out of your imager)

He makes a fantastic point. To paraphrase less eloquently in my broken english: "if you don't know what you are doing or aren't prepared to improve your knowledge and your craft, then this ain't the cam for you."

The earliest adopters of RED cameras completely understand this. Phillip was being kind enough to let those who think they can replace a camera like a DSLR with a RED means understanding a philosophy and also going through a learning curve and growing pains.

REDs support and commitment to "getting it right" is far beyond what anyone else is doing.

We are all learning together, if you want to shoot 1080 at 20000 Iso and sacrific RAW go for it. Let's compare images on a sixty foot screen in ten years.

@phillip.

You've done a good service. Thanks! Your posts help everyone, including RED.

Just noticed that too.

Interesting.

If you delete your membership does it show as banned? PB took so much abuse in this thread who could blame him if he up and left? A couple of the attacks have been so out of order that I'm considering leaving this forum myself.

It's sad...what's supposed to be an informative arena, which Phil spearheads on his website (been following him since the letus days and thank the heavens he does what he does), has turned into a childish Youtube-esque reply page... IMO just delete the thread RED...we all go to Phil's site regardless.

Wow. People are really taking cameras that seriously? :)
It's a bit silly no? Relax everybody, it's just plastic, glass and titanium.

Ah yes.

Remember the days of Scarletuser?

I don't because I never went there.

I do remember the days of reduser before the Scarlet section "occupy'd" all of the current discourse and brought with it a certain kind of air. The kind you smell on trains.

Oh well. Maybe they should add "camera owner" to the avatars so we at least know who has turned on a red camera.

I think people aren't reading his article carefully enough.

He has POSITIVE things to say about Scarlet / EPIC that reinforce my decision to buy the Scarlet.

4K / 5K gives you the ability to make slight adjustments to your shots compositionally. That's a FANTASTIC and VERY USEFUL ability. It was his point there that reminded me how much pan and scan we do at my job, which you just cannot do using 1080P very well.

The article just listed out all the costs you're going to get into. Which is very true. It's going to cost you around $17 ~ $20K for a working Scarlet package.

>> Technically all software released is BETA and not perfect I hate to say it like this but you are the guinea pig

In the epoch of perpetual access, progress, learning and inflation the comforting, yet coarse resolution alpha, beta, release
is melting into the infinite and chaotic resolution of perpetual limnos / constant flux.

"The time will also come when cinema will employ 'The End' solely for nostalgic reasons, thus do enjoy the end whilst able, for the future will be red".

Hey Jason I agree with you that the article showed he was positive about the epic but I read through it and this is the first time I comment on it. I still feel that the article was written in a negative manner. I have read lots of his articles on other cameras and after felt like I understood more or had a better idea of the camera itself, but this article did not leave me feeling so.

I agree with you that the article does outline the additional costs that you should be aware of before purchasing so you know what your getting into, but again it could have been written with a less negative feeling. I mean compairing the Epic to a Sony F3 not something I would have written when talking about article of one camera and not a compairision article.

Comparing Epic with a Betacam is going to get you in trouble :)

Huh? Sorry, finding your post difficult to understand. First, I'm referring to the post that I'm quoting. Second, I'm referring to the Epic-M. Thirdly, The Epic-M was a beta cam. It was a camera for testers that could give feedback. It had issues that needed to be ironed out.

So, please, explain how I am going to get into trouble??

I agree

I really hope PB will come back, and those who attacked him get banned.

Although I don't own a Red jet and I don't post much, the ton of knowledge by reading the posts of the pro's here have helped me a lot.
It is hurtful how to see some one that have done so much for the film community get attacked like in this tread.
His article was all fine, all the respectful pro's tell the same thing. For example: Mike at Fxguide strongly advise to take a Redrocket Card to account for a sensible workflow.
Even Jim advised to invest wisely, like the other pro guys here that state " make a good business decision"

PB was just summing up some of these in his article, some what almost all pro's state.

Mmmm ...... Really?? :D

Am I missing something here? What are you getting at?

From RED's site;

The EPIC-M Pack is a hand-assembled, non-production run camera and is intended for users who can provide testing and constructive feedback directly to RED.

From the ENGLISH dictionary;

Beta test - A trial of machinery, software, or other products, in the final stages of its development, carried out by a party unconnected with its development.

Sounds like Beta testing to me, no?? Jeez!
