  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To buy a Scarlet or not to buy, that is the question…

This thread was kind of doomed from the start.

If you go back to the first page it was first threadjacked in the THIRD post.

The third post!

How was it going to get any better from there.

It went from a repost of a blOg post to "the camera is to expensive" in two replies.

That is demonstrative of how fast things get shot off the rails. Happens a lot now.

Too often.

Yes, I see what you did there. Thing is my friend, I said beta cam, not Betacam.

Please don't misconstrue my words.

i did nothing. i was just laughing at enrique's joke that you didn't get and explaining it to you.

Come on Richard_JP laugh! You have been had on a great joke good and proper! Admit it, acknowledge, laugh about it and move on. Life is too short. Sam Karr's banter with you is the only thing that has stopped this thread from its stray into the gutter and staying in the gutter. I have been truly appalled at how PB has been dealt with on this thread. All he did was post his opinion on HIS blog and someone else has moved it here. Some of the responses here are so out of order the people responsible should be banned and not as I see at the moment (according to previous posts) Phillip Bloom has been banned?

I am in the queue for EPIC stage 4, was really interested in Scarlet but it does not rock my boat, so will stay in that queue. However I am really fast going off a community that to be honest does not look too inviting to wanting to remain a part of it.

Objective thought processes and unbiased open opinion should be the very thought process that drives RED and us film makers forward - not petulant RED Fanboys who can't recognise the difference between opinion and criticism.

What's taken place here should never happen again and moderators should step in far more quickly.

I would like it confirmed by a moderator whether PB has been banned or he has stuck two fingers up and walked?

Whether he has walked or been banned it's a truly sad day for REDUSER.

And one more thing. As a forum we do not need to sit here and defend RED. As I see the overall picture it's performance in the marketplace speaks louder than words here. It has been fully embraced by Hollywood. Peter Jackson, when he could have chosen any camera he wanted chose RED EPIC, it does not get any bigger. I spent three hours the week before last talking about EPIC to the marketeers and creatives of the next largest store group in the UK (behind M&S) about the wisdom of moving forward with EPIC. I do not need bickering in our camp to muddy the waters of helping me push this forward. Constructive debate yes, mud slinging no. Some clients I know live in fear of the RED capture (storage) and post workflow (because of what they hear on the grapevine). PB made some excellent comments not dissimilar from Mr J Bannister (on this forum) about the purchase of Scarlet and its probable end user cost.

They are all true. It is not a cheap camera. It is not a prosumer camera. IT IS A professional piece of kit that needs a professional approach to using it to get the best out of it.

Let's stop the whole fanboy bit. Get off the back foot, move forward, acknowledge both Scarlet's and Epic short comings, say yes to the critics, march on, make movies, make commercials, whatever you are shooting but help all of us and help RED make a better camera which ultimately will help us make better pictures (and make more money to pay for Dragon upgrade!).

The final product we show will shout any critics down. That's all the evidence we need.

phillip bloom you made me think I need to I want a camera, price, return on investment, opsoletar time, the Economic my situation, but if I do not take risks never get what I want. thank

it's my dream scarlet

I just saw Jack and Jill (shot on Alexa) on a smaller screen at our local theater. It looked okay. I wasn't impressed, but it wasn't an Epic, pardon the pun. I quickly walked into the Muppet movie on a much larger screen in the main theater and watched about 10 minutes. It was lit more television than drama for sure, but the resolution looked so much better than Jack & Jill. Both looked good, but because I was looking for it, the Muppet movie which was shot on Epic & Red One MX was noticeably different. I'm very critical when it comes to these things and I honestly could tell a big difference.

If you are shooting movies at 24 fps, the Scarlet is at least as good as the Red One based on specs, sensor, etc. Red One blows up to show on IMAX. I'm so sick of these amateurs who want more. What more can you want at 4k 24fps. If you want more, you are unrealistic in this price range.

I'm also so sick of this perception that because the cost isn't high, it must not be professional. Regardless of cost, 4k is 4k. Just as a camera is a lightbox. Before cameras were computers they were simply a lightbox with a shutter. There were 100,000 film cameras and cheap sub $1000 "russian" cams that could shoot the same thing but the more expensive cam had more features.

Comparing apples to apples 24fps on a Scarlet vs 24fps on an Epic should be the same.

Thank God this thread is moving forward. The post is a little off topic but great we are moving in the right direction. Given the original post it would be great to get the 'Muppet' movie's view on reliability and post work flow.

1. Did you find it difficult?

2. How did you find battery power

3. How many SSD'd were you using

4. Etc, etc,etc,

Lets answer PB's review?

Whoah - I hadn't seen this thread before now. Unbelievable how some people behave.

a) No, Philip has not been banned. He's been on reduser since 2008.

b) People should really avoid conspiracy theories.

c) There is a huge difference between making a point and posting hear-say and implying things

d) Everyone - when a thread starts derailing, please make use of the "report" button on the bottom left of the post. That ways us moderators get informed about the thread & post and we can take appropriate action. We simply cannot read every single thread.

e) Prominent people should be treated with the respect they deserve. Again, you can disagree, but in a respectful manner.

f) Apologies to Philip for the childish, stupid, aggressive, distrusting, appalling behavior by a few posters here on reduser. This should not have happened.
