  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To buy a Scarlet or not to buy, that is the question…

On specs, limitations, firmware, old sensor, goes on and on.. it's a great cam but is it really worth almost 16k for what u get? Just our opinion luv RED! but the scarlet 2/3 had better stuff for lack of a better word in it, new sensor, 120fps at 3k etc.. and it was suppose to be around 6k ,it also came with a pro lens! But just our opinion no need to fight or get mad, you wanted to know, but we could be wrong just going by what we have seen and what Philip Bloom just wrote =)
Based on what?
I'm curious.

Phil has a spot of bad luck with all things RED recently. I would be a wee steamy and would blog a terse line if I walked his RED mile in the last 60 days. Give him a couple months with working equipment and he'll come around. For those on the fence - just rent the thing for the first couple projects. No big dealeo.

And kids . . . let's face facts: Scarlet is just a gateway drug to Epic

Compared to what? That's what I was getting at.
You can't compare Scarlet-X to a Scarlet that never existed in the marketplace.
So compare it to things available in the market - in what way are it's specs, firmware, sensor, etc inferior to anything anywhere near its pricerange?

Not getting into this, it seems like u want to argue, if u are happy paying 16k plus good for you , but it would have been nice for it to be a tad cheaper is all geesh remind us not to open our mouths anymore always someone wanting to start something where there is nothing..

I have a feeling quite some people will buy one because they can, being uninformed, figure out it really is too complex for what they want and can, and then sell the thing again. But as long as you know what you're buying and doing, i think the Scarlet is the best deal in the world.

I dont think Ive ever come across Luis mad or annoyed at anything. But I think he posed a fair question.

I agree with a lot of points Philip has made. Noting also he didnt mention that you arent getting value for money. The sensor itself isnt that old, but everything else was designed created for Scarlet / Epic - cameras that havent been around that long. I can appreciate that you wanted Scarlet to be what was originally announced. But like all companies, Red will make business decisions and live or die by them. Some wont buy it because they wanted the original spec as you stated (which was one of many versions originally announced). Or youll get someone like myself who never wanted a 2/3" Scarlet only the S35 version and where the version we have fills a need. If the scarlet was announced 2/3" I wouldnt have bought one and I would have reviewed my other options (most likely the F3 which Ive been watching carefully).

I can only speak for myself as well when I say, the most common shooting I do wont have a need for 4k and thus Im hoping that one of the external recorders Samurai / Pix 220/240 / Ki pro mini will have a place with these cameras, its certainly looking as though thats going to be workable - but when I want it, its there. One thing I cant go past however is the DR. $17-$20k for a workable package thats shoots 13.5 stops, yes please. Again - not for everyone.

I'm sorry - I wasn't trying to argue. I was simply trying to point out that there is a big difference between what something is worth in the marketplace and what it is worth to a specific person.
Meaning - for you Scarlet is not worth 15K, but if you look at the marketplace it is worth much more than that. That said, it's completely fair for someone to say they don't think it's worth the price for them, but that doesn't mean it's overpriced.

That was all.
No argument intended.

I really don't get why people that doesn't like the camera or price or prefered something else is posting here.
Buy somewhere else, be happy, scarlet is out, it is what it is. I'm waiting for mine and I'm happy beyond imagination. Used to be happy shootinh a R1 and I trully believe scarlet is a better camera.
Lots of options out there, no need to complain, especially here.

No one is complaining sir..

The 2/3" $6K war is over. Let's move on guys

Scarlet seems like it's that guy at the gym who's always focused on building up his biceps to look bigger, but at the end of the day he can't squat diddly, his bench press is pathetic and his cardio is total crap. Sure he could kick your ass in an arm wrestling contest, but is he well rounded and able to compete in a wide arena? Not so much...
