  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To be the Jackass

I would estimate that only about 5% of the people on this forum could successfully navigate installation and maintenance of OSx86. If you haven't heard of it before now i wouldn't recommend you try it. Definitely check it out, but its not for the faint of heart.

I have to ask why PC users have been shoved aside for nearly 2 years now...? I know I will get an answer but it will not satisfy me because it is simply marketing hype and allegance to Apple.

Why not put the Mac users on hold for a few months? And let the PC users catch up on the glory... seems fair to me. I hate being told "buy a mac" worst advice ever.

Build/Beta 16 is upon us but guess what Redalert is finished first, and AGAIN PC users must wait. The SDK is "coming"... I know you have limited resources (hire more people) but like I said put the the PC guys in the front line for a change. Not as many people use Macs as we are brainwashed to believe.

I am being a jackass because I am on the fence waiting on as PC support drifts further away each month.

Regards

Jeff.

Oh just buy a Mac. It'll make you much happier. ;)

Step into the light....

There was no interest from any PC platform companies to work with "the scam" when we got started. Apple embraced us from day one. So you tell me which comes 1st. Having said that, we are frantically working on the SDK to solve the PC issue. No matter what we do, there will be those that have something to complain about (most are legitimate). All we can do is do our best to keep knocking down issues.

Jim

That is sad that everybody else did not respond. I don't blame you Jim and I am not knocking your efforts.

I just wish sometimes things could swing both ways for a small bit.

I understand that perhaps the developement is easier for mac osx because a pc platform is so diverse but I suppose the SDK is coming.

There are 2 main issues with running OSX on the PC.

1) is and has been that absence of all the top-quality application. No matter if discreet smoke, flame, lustre, filmlight baselight, dvs clipster, avid ds nitris, SGO mystika, quantel... all top-softwares are -not- available on OSX, but only on windows/linux. Also the GPU-basing DI systems only run on windows (as assimilate scratch) or if they are compatible with OSX (as Iridas Speedgrade) cant support HD-SDI because of Apple.

2) FCS, as great as offer deal it is for YUV and TV & HD work, doesnt support full 4k, doesnt support 12bit RGB and is therefore crippling reds quality. If Apple color would support 4K, not only 2K, would be not as buggy it would be a much better partner for red.

Coming from the world of the larger system, i however have to admit that i have been pretty impressed by Adobes recent enhancements to their Creative Suite. Qualitywise they have got all the things done Apple is missing, sadly since years.

I have less problems with a PC that runs Mac os x than a real Mac... So invest some time in it and you too will already have a mac.

Yeah, OSX on PCs is easy - if its legal in your country.

A decent 4*2.4 quadcore for ~500€ with a Gforce 8800, 4 GB Ram and 750GB disk is pretty much the standard "Mac Pro" you see in many Studios here.

Jim, what a relief to know that the SDK now finally is getting real.
What i am puzzled about - what happened to the documented fileformat of R16? Several companies (iridas i.e.) will be even faster if they access the redcode directly - and the fileformat documentation should be pretyy easy & fast to implement compared to the SDK.

just buy a mac, PC´s.

your life will be so much better.

Just an FYI it goes both ways. We have a Phantom HD camera in addition to two REDs and they don't make their software for Mac, period. Their suggestion- "hey it runs in Bootcamp, problem solved." That said we also have the option to simply buy a PC.

When a camera runs $100K or more- which to be honest you can also easily get to with a RED and a nice set of primes and accessories- it doesn't make much sense to really sweat the issue of having to add another two grand for a computer that doesn't have the brand name you prefer. You hold your nose and go through with it it.

It's not really a Mac vs. PC issue(which is a kind of a moot point at some level) it's just another piece of hardware you need to make your camera work. Do we get mad at the EVF on the Phantom because it happens to be a Sony or do we just roll with it? Yes... :construction:

I suspect as with the SDK it continues to be a moving target.

Just allow Cineform to release their software already!!!!.......:innocent:

Yeah, cineform should really be allowed -ASAP- to bring their excellent tools to us redusers. They solve *so* many problems at once, on OSX as well as on Windows.

I was a lifelong PC guy. Rather than always being 6 months behind in the video world, I broke down and bought a MacBook Pro. It took exactly 2.5 months to pay it off on Red shoots. How many tools can you say that about?

No big deal. Make the switch.
