  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tired of the extremely poor craftsmanship of our LCD cables

Jack, let me know what Red is able to do and how much the repair costs. Would really appreciate it!
same issue here. just about to send one into Red for service. anyone done that before with any success?

I tried acetone and some other dissolvents without any luck. Now I'm forced to just send it in to RED and await a week and a ridiculous bill.

Thank you to all that tried to help though, hopefully nobody else has to go through this.

Jason has been extremely helpful throughout this whole process and has offered his expertise and assistance in every form. I'm only sending the camera into Red because they sounded somewhat supportive of the issue on the phone today and claimed I could get it back before next Friday (for my shoot on Saturday). If they hit me back with an absurd figure I'll gladly be hiring Jason to try his best at it.

Also, this isn't the first time Cinema Oxide and Jason have been graciously helpful with me. I highly recommend Cinema Oxide to any and all Redusers.

So the RED Hollywood store said I'm going to have to send my camera in and it will likely cost a pretty penny. They also said that, because of the way the lemo pins are designed, they're not sure how the locktite would ever work.

I don't recommend using the suggested items in this thread, as I only applied the smallest amount and am stuck with two pins that both no longer lock and unlock from the pull of the (now stuck) outer layer.

Hi James. Threadlock is only meant to be applied sparingly to the thread of a nut or bolt (or in this case the end cap or the matching thread on the shell). Usually a single drop on either the male or female thread is sufficient. It's not meant to go on pins or Lemo locking collars at all, so I can't see how this could be the cause of your problem, unless you did apply them to the pins or sliding collar for some reason?

Given the events that have passed, RED's word should be the final message for RED camera accessories. - No thread-locker material or other similar substances to be used.
I'll continue to use the correct materials in the correct way, but if unsure then yes, be wary.

There is nothing wrong with the "craftsmanship" of reds cables. In fact I think you have a poor grasp of the meaning of the word. The Lemo connectors, are not made by RED, and are made to an extremely high level of precision. They are then assembled by RED. I'm sorry, but if you can't be bothered to maintain your gear, and then ruin it by gooping it all up with lock tight (if done correctly, which is one drop on the end of a toothpick applied to the threads, there is no way this could screw up your cable. Maybe, if you put the cap on covered in lock tight letting gravity drag it down into the pins and collar, then you could screw it up, but I can't fathom a level of mechanical ineptitude that would lead to that.), don't blame the equipment. The whole title of this thread is bullshit.

It should be renamed, "I can't have nice things because I ruin them and blame others."

Uh, yeah.

You're right, I apologize if I articulated myself too crassly. I was a bit perturbed over the matter when I made the thread, if a moderator wants to change the title to something along the lines of "Concerns with with our LCD cables," I'd appreciate it.

Nick Gardner (whom I admire and respect tremendously on these boards) is absolutely correct when he says we should treat our equipment according to its value, however I haven't done anything cavalier in my handling of these cables. Each time it's been when I've pulled my cable out of my bag (or my AC has) and the screw has magically disappeared since the last time it was used / handled. Rather than have to forewarn any and every AC I work with to be wary of these stupid little screws, why not make them simply stay tightened?

Not sure what your problem is, especially considering we've been cordial through private messages before this. I didn't "goop all the locktite" everywhere, I applied a drop and then screwed it on. I didn't do anything more or less than what was stated by others' recommendations in this thread, and the only reason I posted the disastrous results were to forewarn others from suffering the same fate (the side module is in the shop right now).

And as for the semantics of "assembly" or "crafting," I'm confident you knew what I was trying to express: The cables fall apart due to the pieces unscrewing themselves and I wish they didn't. I didn't express this sentiment as well as I should have, hence my recognizing of the fact earlier and request to have the title changed.

LOL. I guess now that I read that I came off as way more of an asshole than I intended ;-) Consider it an out burst at the state of the industry where you used to have to know a bunch of mechanical shit, and now nobody bothers to learn because the cameras are mostly computers. I apologize, chalk it up to grumpy old man syndrome.

Red did nothing to help here. I asked for a detailed report and they said the cable broke from bending and twisting. Isnt that the whole purpose of a cable???? They can only sell me a new one. Wasted money on shipping the malfunctioning cable to Red.

I recommend blue loctite, and yes, it would be nice if it came this way from the factory.

I would NOT recommend using any loctite, and neither does Red. The blue is the specific one I used a drop of and look where it got me.

Can someone fill me in on the correct way to keep these connectors tightened? And possibly a link to the correct tool to do so? Nothing I have seems to fit correctly.

Thanks,

Adam

There is no such protocol.

Just plug it into a mating connector. Then use an adjustable spanner to gently tighten the hexagonal nut cap - but don't go too heavy on it. It's aluminium and a fine thread - overcranking it will probably damage the connector and/or the cap. If you can't undo the cap with your fingers, it's tight enough. Or for guidance, an 1/8 to 1/4 maximum turn beyond finger tight is sufficient!

My new Red cable I ordered from them one month ago (after having my other two fail) is now faulty too... Time to buy another new one... This is getting expensive.
