Hey guys I wanted to see if anyone had any solid suggestions on what to do when selling their RED cameras online?

Since fraud and theft is such an ongoing issue, I was looking for tips on the safest way to handle these transactions.

Below are a few tips that I'm aware of, but I would love to hear everyone else's thoughts:
  1. Use sites like PayPal or Escrow.com vs wire transfer
  2. Insure, track and signature confirmation when shipping
Lastly, does anyone have any suggestion on ways to prevent a situation where the buyer freezes the funds claiming that the camera/accessories are missing or that something is not working etc.

Sell the camera separate from the accessories.
Send the camera to Red for Transfer of Ownership.
After the camera passes inspection the buyer has to pay using a method they can't freeze. No PayPal! Why risk having the buyer make a claim when Red says the camera is perfect?
After full payment is cleared the seller can finish the Transfer of Ownership and have Red ship directly to the new buyer.

Thanks Curran, all of what your saying makes a ton of sense but when I spoke to REDtoday they told me that for the buyer to receive the 90 day warranty I would have to sign the transfer papers prior to sending the camera in. Otherwise my other option is to send the camera to RED for inspection for $100 and then pay an additional $500 for transfer if I decide to proceed with the transaction (w/ no 90 day warranty though)

Research the person you are dealing with.

I've made some big purchases and have sold some expensive gear and have never had a problem. I'm either really lucky, or the fact that I kinda knew who I was dealing with helped. Google is your friend in this case.

If we should refrain from using Paypal, are there other options you would recommend other than escrow.com?

Yes, expect to pay $600 for Red to kind of act as a middleman.

Wire transfer is the best. I recently used this service: https://transferwise.com/us/

There's 2 sides to the wire transfer. Yes, it is better for the seller, but if I was a buyer, and the person ONLY gives the option to wire transfer, to me, that looks sketchy, as that gives the buyer zero protection, thus the seller can be viewed as fraudulent. You may need to get reputation before people will buy gear with only that option.

I have sold 2 cameras and bought gear and have used PayPay for everything, without issue. Infact, it saved me, as I bought a side SSD once, payed $660, and the seller stopped contacting me entirely. Had to make a ticket, and proof that I tried reaching out, but no contact back for weeks. I got my money back. This would be why buyers would be scared to buy if only wire transfer was offered.

Definitely, as a buyer I love PayPal but as a seller it scares me since the buyer always seems to have the upper hand

Surprisingly when I spoke to RED they told me they won't be the middleman since the transaction technically has nothing to do with them. Once you sign the transfer papers, all they do is inspect the camera and send it off to the new owner. They told me that once I sign the papers and they receive the camera they can't stop the transaction if something goes wrong even if they still have the camera in their possession. Strange...

Edit: Apparently after call my bomb rep, he said that they can hold it till I approve the release

+1 for Transferwise – great way to minimize buyer/seller fees and get the best currency conversion rates, especially when used on International transactions. They use a clever work-around to avoid typical fed wire fees and provide a much better conversion rate, which can save several hundreds on larger transactions as compared to wiring finds directly through a bank. If you feel comfortable enough to send or receive a bank wire on a specific transaction (case-by-case), its definitely worth checking out.

I know that Red has their hands full, but wouldn't it be supernice if Red could have a transfer service? Since the ownership needs to be transfered and the camera probably needs a checkup, it will still be sent in to Red. So why not have a service where the seller can send in the camera to Red, the buyer buys it through Red getting all the garantuees of the transfer while the money transfers through Red to the previous owner when everything is in the green.

I still think Red should have a used gear part of the store. I love the battle-idea and bought my monitor through it, would be nice if it was bigger.
