  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TIMELAPSE QUESTIONS/ANSWERS USING EPIC/SCARLET-X

Did two whole nights of B-roll for a spot i shot and its a nightmare to use. A DSLR is way more practical. You have to black shade ever time you change settings because it is critical at those slower shutters. Add to that the whole frame summing/averaging thing and its just not worth it. I originally did it to match the other dragon footage I shot for the main spot, but if I did it again I would use a DSLR hands down.

Personally, I don't get people who are frustrated with shooting timelapse using RED. I did some timelapse stuff years ago using 5d mkII, and it was awkward in many ways. The most distracting things were - flicker of a mirror/shutter (can be dealed in post) and slow post-production workflow (adding images to a timeline makes it slow as hell, otherwise you had to make too many decisions based on expirience, not footage). Nowadays i shoot some timelapse stuff using my Scarlet X, and it's comfy as hell - no need of a trigger, no flicker, frame mixing when needed and stops to choose, manual iris adjustment without fear of moving your camera (read weight of a package), frame count and preview right after the shot done in several speeds. WB adjustment on a preview! And the last, but not the least - it mixes up with your other footage flawless.

Of course, there are some disadvantages, like - you have to have a bigger motorized slider for movement, it's a crappy idea to use it to film construction site and so on. I'd say there are situations, where it's better to go with slr/mirrorless, but when it's done on purpose and you don't have to climb your way several weeks to the spot - it's better to shoot timelapse on a Red.

Everything stated above is just my own expirience and my humble opinion.
