If anyone out there is looking to do timelapses with their EPICs/SCARLET-Xs, then I'd like this thread to be used as a repository for any technical questions and answers from users who have experience in this field.

To start, here's my first couple of questions:

1) Currently, I control my Nikon D3S/D7000 camera using either a Kessler Crane's Camera Control Module or an intervalometer (in-camera or external). Obviously I'm interested to know if there is any way to control the EPIC/SCARLET-X in this manner, whether internally or externally.

2) What's the longest exposure that can be made by an EPIC/SCARLET-X?

Thanks!

Marcos

Consider this me "subscribing" to this thread but... Whats the point of Epic/ Scarlet Timelapse when you can do Raw 4k timelapses with Canon 5/7ds? I do them on mine all the time...

I could be wrong since i'm on an older build, but last i did a time-lapse using Epic...1.5 month ago...i could only go as low as 1 frame per second and exposure was rather limited to i think 1/2 second....this is all from memory.....so i may be wrong on exposure, but i don't recall being able to shoot 1 frame every 2, 3, 4, 5 or more seconds.

staying in an R3D workflow, for an online editing process and faster editing speed, is one reason...

Precisely. I've been doing DSLR timelapses for a while, and I would like to start incorporating the image quality of a RED camera, especially the HDRx factor, into the timelapses. And like Meryem states correctly, staying in an R3D workflow would be a big reason.

I'm surprised very few people are interested on the timelapse with a Scarlet-X topic. Does anyone here know the answers to the original 2 Qs?

1. There is a break-out cable and way to control it. Kessler has not released a cable that supports EPIC. Not sure if his current box can support the trigger or not. Eric does have an EPIC, so you might email him to see if he can provide the necessary cable.
2. I don't recall off hand, but not long.

Timelapse is on REDs todo list.

Marcos, Tom Lowe is the guy to answer those questions.
He shoots the most beautiful timelapse footage I've ever seen.

Am I missing something here? Just received my stage 3 upgrade epic mx last week and cannot figure out how to get the camera lower then 8fps? I checked the epic pdf and there is no mention of timelapse when i search the pdf.

Under settings in the touch screen all there is DISPLAY, LOOK< PROJECT< AUDIO?VIDEO< SETUP < MAINTENANCE< PLAYBACK and there is nothing to do with time-lapse in there.

Any advice?

Thanks in advnace

on your touch screen LCD....did you hold down or double tab the far end to open up the calculator....you should be able to take it down to 1fps.....as far as i know that's as low as we can go....i know that many of us have been waiting for more feaatures to shoot longer intervals....but don't know what red is going to do with that.

it all makes sense know. Just getting used to her.

Thanks for the tip!

Assuming you have a computer that is capable of handling large files.

one might then ask why even own an epic or scarlet if you cannot control the downhill flow of info.....Yes, HUGE files and you must have a LOT of drives and space...My case i use (4) 5 bay hot swap bays with 15 drives @ 3tb each and 5 of them @ 4tb each for total of 65tb of space...actual usable more like 45tb of online storage...Oh, then your backups.....but such is the nature of shooting with this camera....you need to have the downline tools and assets....and it doesn't stop there either....

i'm rolling on my first lapse now, 1fps at 3k redcode 6 to 1.... hopefully it turns out okay, wasn't sure what compression to go with...tried to aim it for the middle...

How nice for you!
