  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Time for me to get off the pot

I don't disagree with Mark, but he is fortunate enough to have the resources to make his decision based on what works best. There are some (Like myself) that only have so much, and it does not support a new camera, AND a new post platform. So we must make what we have work... For now.

That's it.. That's the end of the arguement, dissagreement, whatever. Of the PC users, I am under the guess that 80% of us are not sticking with the PC cause "we love it" we sticking because we don't want to lose where we've brought it too until now.

We'll all make it work. In fact it already does.. We just need to tweak this out.. That's all.

For those of you that have not looked at NewTek's speed edit.. You should. It's not good for long form feature work, but for short form corporate, music video, and dramatic narrative of 30min or less, I HIGH recommend it. If you own ANY other editing system, the cost is $395.00... Not bad.. I will test this out more.

NewTek really pissed me off with the direction they took VT5 in, but I have to admit that speededit is wonderful and DAMN fast. I did a LITTLE work on it with Cineform, and I saw no problems to speak of. Need to test more.

Frank,

Don't know if you've looked this way, but I'm gonna check out Vegas
Jay

Jay, I've been looking at a Red - Vegas workflow (I own Vegas). As it stands today, not good.. but if RedCine can write out to DirectShow in the near future, there will be possibilities, but only at 2K or less for now. I don't know what Vegas 64 will have in store for us, supposed to be more info at NAB.

I found (from a Sony tech) that Vegas 8 can read and edit FourCC v210 avi files.

Basically 10bit 4:2:2 FourCC YcBcr (aka YUV). You can go to http://FourCC.org and select the v210 item for more info.

Aja was the first to create an avi version of a similar codec in Quicktime.

Vegas 8 Pro can open and edit v210. If you have an Aja HD SDI capture card, you get their codecs with it, don't know if they still offer free downloads the way Black Magic does.

If/when RedCine can output to v210 avi files, then it will be a viable workflow as long as you have lots of fast I/O.

I don't know if Vegas will work with the QT proxy files, that would be sweet, but don't hold your breath.

Drastic currently has a free codec pack you can download, one of them being v210.

As it stands today, Vegas is not really a good option for either Red or SI if you want to take full advantage of them.

Hopefully NAB will show something different, but I'm not optimistic. For a lot of other workflows, Vegas is great.

You might want to keep CS3 or seriously look at Apple.

Man, I never thought I'd post something like that, but sometimes reality sucks.

I'm currently building a semi low end Windows Vista 64 workstation for current needs (quad core, 8gig, 3T Raid 10 storage).which includes Vegas
since it's Vista certified.

If you were going for a new XDCAM EX1, then I would say Vegas uber alles, end of story. But not for RED for the forseable future. I say this as a long time enthusiastic Vegas user.
Vegas STILL doesn't read direcshow codecs or QT codecs higher than 8bit.

I've held off on plans on building an 8core Xeon based system until it's time for my Red. Might have to buy a Mac.
