  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tilta Nucleus Nano available for PreOrder $229.

I am using a nucleus M motor with a nano hand wheel, and they do indeed talk to each other. I haven't gone the other way, but I read up on it and it should work.

Nick

Awesome stuff. If you get a chance to test out the handle, let us know. I expect it to work - plenty of people have said it's supposed to - but no one has said, 'yeah I've done it and it works no problem.'

Just thinking for one-man-band/runnin' and gunnin' it'd be really nice to get that handle working...

I had mine working fine with powerbank i had it on two shoots. I was kind of ok with it but i wanted to push it further to get better response so I got my D-tap to Dci and Dci to micro USB (as recommended here) from Amazon. It seams like fried my motor right from the moment i first tried to switch on from a V-mount battery. It does not even power on anymore even with powerbank.
Anyone had similar bad luck with this mod? I contacted tilta but never heard from them. Cheers

Does anyone have any update on the transmitter having intermittent control when close by to the motor? I'm also getting this problem when trying to have the follow focus mounted on 15mm rails just next to the motor. I'm wondering if a firmware might come out to solve this issue, perhaps enabling a low power transmission mode as that tends to be the cause of these types of radio intermittence - too much tx power floods the rx and garbles everything.

I was told by Tilta that there would likely be a firmware update. I've been watching their website for that but have heard nothing. I moved my motor to the opposite side of the rig and it works. When I moved it off the rig it works perfectly. Like Note I bought the dtap. In my case I found it to short. So I just made one up on my own. Works great.

I couldn't find one but here’s what I did.

Bought some P-Tap connectors from eBay as well as some Micro to standard type 2 USB cables from Mono Cable. I cut off the large connector and soldered the red and black wires to the poles from the P-Taps. Assembled the P-Taps making sure to place the red one on the positive side and Black on the negative.

I’m no electrical engineer so maybe someone else can or should give you a more exact description but this worked really well for me.

Thanks for the update Marshall!

I just got a Nano, still need to get a handle, 12v pTap-to-mUSB (for bigger lenses), and the R/S cable.

The handle situation has me really frustrated; the Nucleus-M handle doesn't have a microUSB or 12v out to power the motor, but all the other Nano Handles (for the Zcam and P4k) do... And they actually take NPF or LP-E6 batteries (which are a better than the 18650s of the Nucleus-M handle in my opinion). They actually look perfect and are only $200, *but*, they're left-handed only and have awkward/camera specific mounting points. Kinda infuriating.

The LP-E6 ones would be perfect if it had a rosette on the left-upper side (so it'd be a right-handed handle). Could make a 12v-out-to-mUSB and have power for days at 1nm of torque, stay powered on even if the camera is off or camera battery disconnected, etc. This kind of oversight bugs me.

I set mine up to be moved from camera to camera so am just using the 18650's. Path of least resistance kinda thing. Just ordered a 4 pack of the 18650's with a charger. Agree that they seem to be a poor choice for power but it solves the basic problem. When we first got the Nano we used it a lot but found that our regular follow focus works just fine for 80-90 % of our shoots. Though I don't have it set up on my own rig I've shot on one where the operator just pointed the camera with a focus puller working from a separate monitor. I didn't expect it would work as well as it did. I don't own my own image transmission system yet but likely will soon.

Has anyone got the Nucleus-Nano motor to communicate with the Nucleus-N handle (LP-E6 version in my case). I have the motor set to slave and I have tried all of the channels and can't seem to get any communication between the devices. Working through it with support but that is a bit slow going at the moment.

Do those handles need to have the motor plugged in? I wasn't sure if they were wireless, and hence didn't think they needed to be set any certain way (just have the wireless handle turned off, and the nano-motor plugged into the handle mUSB).

Came with no instructions, there's no info on their website. I thought it was similar to Nucleus M handle (which does work perfectly fine with nano as I have tested it) with smaller footprint but maybe I'm wrong. The Micro USB is used for powering the motor so I don't think it's meant to be hard wired, although you can draw power from the handle to power the motor if you want. Wish it came with documentation or there was documentation on their website.

If anyone is interested I'm making a batch of custom P-Tap to Micro USB cables for myself and some friends. $30 each plus $5 shipping up to 3 cables.
I'll test them on my personal Nano but other than that it's at your own risk. These are 14V+ straight wired cables so they'll fry a phone or other USB device that's not rated for it like the Nano motor.
The cables I'm using are 24AWG and rated for 1Amp+ charging so there should be no issues, I've yet to see a Nano pull over .75A on the Red internal meter.

I'm looking for a wireless FF. I have two question that will sway me for yea or nay on this... How is the motor strength and does the motor make any noise? I have found the cheaper wireless FF will produce noise specially when focusing fast...

I've been very impressed by this little guy, it's totally capable of working on anything but the stiffest lenses (with direct 14V power) and I've found the motor it's self essentially noiseless, the gear can have some noise depending on the mesh with the lens but it's BY FAR the best affordable unit I've tried. You pretty much have to go up to the Nucleus M package to get a better system. I'm mostly using it as a dedicated iris control these days since my AC's have WUC1s, Prestons or Nucleus M systems but it's worked a treat on some personal projects as well. At $250 it's a no brainer really.

Evan, curious where you found the Micro Connector with the 90° angle?
