I finally got a chance to test this. The Asus Thunderbolt EX2 cards are working with the latest bios on the X99 Deluxe. Requires some bios settings and bottom slot location but it does work.

Good to know thanks for the update Eric.

I m definitely looking at having ADK build me a new Adobe/Resolve workstation in the new year so this is good to hear.

Excellent, we finally received the first shipment of 970GTX and 980GTX cards. I am running the 980GTX benchmarks right now. Wow this card is silent at 90+% load and the GPU temp remains in 50 to 60C range. The Fan is less than 1400 rpm's. This is a massive difference from the 700 series cards.

Reference cards?

780Ti or Titan. Both of them generate more heat and the RPM's of the fan's normally start at 1800+ and can push as high as 2400+ RPM's though the fans can get up over 3000RPM's if forced to 100%.

Great to hear Eric. Any recommendations on who has stock of them? Seems everyone is still selling the ex1 or listing the 2 port as TBD

The single port Thunderbolt EX2 should be available now. The dual port so far is still limited to the Thunderbolt Z97 board that we have seen although I believe the purchaser was able to find it separate a month ago 1 once.

Wonder if the EX1/2 run on the Z10PE-D8-WS ?

Not that I have seen but were still waiting for the board to become available. Asus doesn't list the header port on that board yet.

All the Gigabyte and Asus X99 motherboards I've looked into have TB headers, but the TB add on cards can only go into the bottom x4 slot.

The TB host integrated with X99 only works on a specific 4 lanes, which is going to make it the bottom or last X4 in 99% of all situations. To re-work it into another slot position would require more creative board design and additional layering to transpose circuit and slot ordering.

The dual-port EX1 card out there won't support TB2 and may not be compatible anyway. IMO, there's no point in having a dual-port EX2 TB2 card since there's only one TB2 host sitting atop 4 lanes which can't fully power it's 20Gbps potential. TB2 requires all devices other than displays to have daisy-chain ability.

ASUS Rampage V X99 boards are finally becoming more available and prices are slipping a bit -- $472 from a few vendors now. The X99-E workstation class board is still very scarce. I still have not received mine, but have been told I should have it next week.

Yes Sept 30th was the date we heard for the WS arrival at Disti. I was wondering who was getting theirs before then. However Asus does have that pre-shipment preferred partner program so I figured it had to be those.

Hi Eric!
May I ask you about the details of the required bios settings?

We are using the X99 Deluxe and tried to install the EX2 to run the Ultra Studio on a Windows Workstation. The EX2 is plugged in the bottom slot.
But the Ultra Studio isn´t recognized. All parameters in the Black Magic Design Controll Panel stay gray.

Does anybody has an idea?

Martin

Go into the bios and hit F7 for advanced. Then go to the advanced category at the top. Go down to the Thunderbolt listing. Change the AIC Location group to NB PCIE Slot. Then change the AIC Location to NB PCIEX16_5. Then go to exit and select save changes and reset.
