Thoughts on the future of Scarlet and its Package...

thanks guys for looking that up, usually i'd have posted it initially so there isn't that "are you sure?" factor from guys like kyle wanting a new york times reference along with a wikipedia article on the subject. just kidding kyle. thanks guys. next time, maybe you can trust us? :)

I do not think so. DSLRs are aimed towards hobbyists, Scarlet is a professional tool. I do think some potential scarlet buyers will abandon ship and go for the next gen DSLRs, but for professionals...I think scarlet will be a WAY bigger bang for your buck, even with the rumors of the new canon DSLRs having "Raw" video files. I just dont think they have the cinema end in mind. Its like Apple I think, they are gearing more towards consumer-prosumer.

DSLRs may be aimed more towards pro-sumers but at least they are out and available and have been for the passed few years. All this speculation about a camera that had a projected release date of 2009 is great though.

For a company in a competitive field, to give updates and have the transparency that Mr. Jannard and Land provide is remarkable. We know Scarlet is coming. Now we just get squabble over the details.

If you want to see an orgy of truly rampant speculation, you could always Google "Canon + Nikon + rumors". Or better yet, contact their customer service, and ask them what new products are on their way.

Not that we distrust you, just too much FUD going around. Wikipedia would make for a horrible reference, smarty pants... >:) I've been here for a long time, don't always post, but do read everyday.

My guess is they will include a 5" Touchscreen and Pro battery module. My guess is the battery module will cost less than the side-handle.

Joseph,
I really like the way you think and try to open discussions. Many thanks for this !

As I can see, scarlet (and eccessories) price would certainly increase again. Some people could certainly not afford it anymore. For me this is still a good deal, but I'm wondering if Epic-S is not slowly becoming a better choice for the difference...? Anyway we could only get our answers when Scarlets are ready to ship.
Excepted if Jarred or Jim come over here and give a super info ! :coolgleamA:

The Dual Battery Module will cost $1,250 until 1.1.12. To make that work, you also need the Module Adapter which costs $300. So, until 1.1.12, this route would "cost less" for the customer but still cost RED more during the time before the price hikes.

Upon the 1.1.12 date, the two options will cost identically due to the Battery Module going up in price by $200

That would assume the Epic-S stays at the (estimated) price though.

I may have picked this out of the sky, but I have always felt that Epic-S (Scarlet S35) would fill the $17.5k mark left by R1. Even when it was $7k, I thought this would happen, and still do. Prove me wrong Jim ;-)

Thanks Franck for the kind words. Perhaps I should break down the costs of the EPIC-S? Though the EPIC-S brain has been said to be priced around $12,000, I think people will again be mildly surprised at how much more it might cost than the F-Scarlet we are currently talking about.

lol, you know, maybe you should have read the context that my quote was stated. I was answering a question that someone asked.

I think the $6-8k range is the sweet spot. $10k is too much.

Anything higher and I believe RED risks leaving a gap to a big name company to jump right in and under cut them with a similar product for a better price.

Just a thought. Nothing more.

Hold off on the Epic-S price packaging..may be a moot point after all if you consider
Epic-X brain increase..you have to expect a similar percentage increase for Epic-S brain. At that higher price Epic-S may no longer
make as much sense. Especially if you consider that when Dragon sensor is out..next year??..that sensor will be able to
go into an Epic-X brain but not an Epic-S brain.

Given the electronics constraints, it doesn't look like the Dragon sensor can be an upgrade for EPIC-S. Only EPIC-M and ECIC-X.

Jim

If money is an issue...people will be going Scarlet.
If money not an issue..most people will go Epic-X.
Epic-S may now fall between the cracks.

Time will tell. I thought the same, but my viewpoint has changed. There will be people with $10,000. Then there will be people with $40,000+. There will surely be people in between who want to step up from the Scarlet but don't have enough to go all the way to the EPIC-X...no?

there's also quite a few people that do everyday shooting that don't need the advanced features of the epic-x, and don't necessarily need the dragon upgrade... they probably already have some cine and still lenses that would work perfectly on the epic-s but not the scarlets. lenses will be a big deciding factor for some people. those that want to use their lenses will mostly be attracted towards the epic-s. the epic-s is basically an updated R1, plus some, and minus some $$... and there is a huge difference between 3k and 5k... i'm just sayin. i'm still thinking about it... if i had a bunch of lenses sitting around it would be a no brainer, but we'll just have to see.

Sure there will be people who want the lowest cost 5K which is Epic-S. So in that sense it offers the biggest bang for the buck.

Just wouldn't want to compete for rentals with it against a dragon upgraded Epic-X in Dec. 2012.
The key question would be.."do you have the dragon..we need the dragon.."..brilliant name..
people will just latch onto it. Whoever came up with it deserves a raise.

The real question with Scarlet is if the Scarlet glass went up.
The mini-primes by themselves and how much the zoom contributes to the fixed Scarlet final price.
Seems like Canon glass has increased but Nikon pretty much the same.

But yes it does become a camera choice in regards to lenses you want to use.
If you have 35mm glass those won't be optimal to shoot narrative on Scarlet..so
Epic-S makes alot of sense in that case. Again the question is how much glass will
wind up being on Scarlet.

Good thread. i was originally thinking Epic S, but when you add up all the necessary gear, Scarlet will be more in my budget. Anyway, if the Scarlet works out well, the rest of the gear will always work with an Epic S later down the road.

Let's see...what I believe is specific to the SCARLET would include the Side SSD Module, and a module adapter if rear modules are wanted in the future. And the fixed lens, obviously ;-)

I thought the side SSD module was the same for Scarlet and Epic, but I have no basis for that. Just what I thought I read somewhere. Anyone know for sure?

Jarred said the side SSD's were different dimensions due to the difference in body size between Epic and Scarlet. Side SSD also adds a monitor port for the 5" touch screen.

There are still plenty of us out there that LOVE the 16mm/2/3" sized format for its combination of creative flexibility, general all around handiness and practicality. No apologies required vis-a-vis 35mm anything even for narrative work. As far as DSLR video is concerned for me "FF" stands for Fuzzy Focus.:sifone:
