  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts and Tips responses here...

My question is, why does the histrogram shut off when Rocket Output is enabled. The histogram is the one tool we Need in order to grade RAW footage right. It is very annoying to have to turn off output to look at the histogram.

All in all though, do like the new tools. Noticed there was a debayer detail control and denoise and sharpening, when will these new tools get enabled?

Correct me if I am wrong Jarred/Deanan but RT histograms is heavy GPU and with Rocket pulling the duty to do RT playback or SDI out it cant handle RT histograms currently.

it will... soon. :)

I don't do a lot "fanboy"ish posts, but I'm going to indulge myself today.

Greatly enjoyed RED DAY.

MysteriumX looks great and REDCINE-X, REDCOLOR, REDGAMMA, etc. are all brilliant - makes raw footage much more accessible.

Brilliant work by the RED team.

Jim had also mentioned 64GB at the RED Day session as well. (Talking about having a 16GB be equal to 1000' mag, and - "as of today, a 4000' mag")

And of course, this really makes my day.

Any chance they will be available before our week long shark shooting expedition starting FEB 14?

Just loaded the WIN version of Redcine-X on my Toshiba laptop an played with it for a few minutes. The laptop is a Vista 64 bit core2 duo with a 256mb Radeon graphics card on board. Unlike Redcine, the X version does export properly rendered frames, at least Tiffs, with the Radeon. Amazing difference in noise and low light grading with the short clip I used compared to before. The laptop will now play clips at 1/8 res in real time too.

Thanks Jim and Red Team, this is an incredible app. Leaps and bounds ahead of the old version in every respect. Now I can use the laptop (with an external monitor) for field grading and casual offline editing of dailies. Keep on rockin'!

Did not think of it that way. That would make sense, as having to pass back the information to the System GPU from the rocket would be taxing.

Would love an official answer form the boys. Even if we could not have a RT histogram during playback, if we could have it just during a still frame, that would be mighty helpful.

Thanks

Noted. Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, not sure what's up with this. Histogram disappears totally once the monitor out is enabled.

Once monitor out is on, the images go straight out rocket and don't return to the CPU to do the histogram.

We will be working on a second path that can at least do the histogram on grading/pause.

A windows version of this latest experimental build of Redcine-X would be really appreciated.

Don't shoot the messenger! :emote_couch:

Jamie!! What are we going to do with you?? :conehead:

subtle hint... "there were over a hundred Mac laptops on the primary sound stage for Avatar where Cameron was working daily. He looked terrible, didn't even take time to go to the dentist to get his tooth fixed. But all the technology there was impeccable!"

So that I'm not off subject here..

I downloaded RedCine-X a few weeks ago and found it very good to use. I immediately used RedColor and RedGamma to check against the RAW files as the Quicktime proxies I was given by a production was all Rec709 and looked terrible. The new color science at work is GREAT. The app. was slow and clunky on my MacBook Pro dualcore 2.2ghz, 2GB ram, giving it a workout.. but NOT because of the coding.. 4K res I'd expect to be hard to move on such a lightweight hardware.

Edit: 2gb ram, not 1gb.. wrong laptop spec.

Lift, Gamma, and Gain are a great new addition. I would also like to second the request to hear what the definition of FLUT control is. Obviously, I have played with it and can see what it does but it would be great if someone could chime in here and give a somewhat detailed response to what it is, when is it recommended to use and what it represents to the RAW data.
In my tests, what I found interesting is that it basically cancels out (so to speak) ISO? For example, when I crank ISO to 6400 on old RED footage and have FLUT standard at 0 my footage is obviously blown out. When I crank FLUT down to -4.7 (Still at ISO 6400) I am perfectly exposed again. Without noise introduced BTW. I made an example to download and look at.

There are 3 files attached. One is the originally shot file with nothing done to it just imported into REDCINE-X82e. The Second is with REDCOLOR and REDGAMMA applied with a simple White Balance. The Third file is with REDCOLOR and REDGAMMA applied, White Balance and ISO at 6400, FLUT at -4.7. The result is virtually the same image and virtually the same Histogram. Colors vary a bit.

My 2gHz Toshiba runs RC-X real time as far as most ops. Plays clips realtime or near realtime at 1/8 res. Rendering output is understandably slow, but not horrible. It has 4GB of ram loaded though and two 200GB hard drives, so one is a dedicated scratch drive for video. Perhaps bumping the ram on your Mac would make a difference.

replacing Red One fans ?

replacing Red One fans ?

TIPS...

CAMERA FIRMWARE
Perform frequent firmware upgrades. We are improving builds on a regular basis. Take advantage of that. If you experience anything outside of normal camera operation, re-load firmware and email log files to RED for evaluation. Do a black shading calibration after EVERY firmware upgrade.

HEAT
If you're not recording audio, then set the fans to "Hot" to avoid ever even getting close to over heating. Don't tape off/block the ports on the side of the camera since heat escapes out of those ports. If fans get noisy, replace them. Professional cameras need maintenance.

Jim

Thanks for those TIPS Jim. I'd didn't know the fans could get noisy because of wear, or that they could be replaced. Is that an operation that can only be done at Red headquarters? How much does it cost? As I should be up for a Sensor upgrade quite soon, if they are done quickly as I hope, I would like to have my fans checked on, and changed if necessary.

Cheers,
Damien

Wow, I've been evaluating using Reds for a BBC/NBC show and I had been thinking that the look we were getting had been a little de-saturated for what we are doing, compared to the film results we currently get. But looking at some of the old drag racing footage (that I keep on my laptop to evaluate new builds) the new colour science is terrific and really just knocked that desaturation on the head. I'm going to have to go back to my producers.

Of course we tend to grade at a larger facility who have their baselight system working off r3ds. So if I'm not going through Redcine-X, how long will it take for these new methods to trickle into the post system for systems such as Baselight?

Hi David, Oh! Of course.. I was running at FULL RES! (oops) I should have noted that. Was doing it to pull stills at that time. I bet I could get realtime at 1/8 or better, even as-is. I need to upgrade ram because I have a bad habit of compositing and 3D modeling on the poor lil thing. Noted that Toshiba laptops are not bad machines..

Editing to above post.. I have 2GB ram. My bad. Got my laptops mixed up.

I know this wasn't really discussed in the tips thread but I was wondering how complicated it was going to be for me ( someone who has never used any footage over 1080p) to compress my 2/3 raw file to 1080p for blueray use...
