I'm stoked that it's August 1st.

We're so close to X that I can taste it in the air...

:) :) :)

I would share your excitement if I knew there will be some sort of option for using my Nikon glass. Otherwise, I guess I can just shoot an air movie.

ehehehehe

Jacek over at Optitek? Dumb mount?
Yeah, I've considered that. But that thing is a thousand bucks for a dumb mount, last I heard. I really want the RED Nikon electronic mount when ready. But if the price (once quoted) is $2,000, then a temporary dumb mount plus the eventual electronic mount x 2 cameras becomes a $6,000 dollar expense. If I could sell my Ti PL mount from my RED packages that would help ease the burden. But, it looks like RED is including the PL mount in the Stage 4 option, so that takes away any market for the Ti PL mount.

SSDs and batteries and blank drives to download to plus the accessories needed to download... these expenses keep adding up to the point where I just have to wait in order to outfit my kit more efficiently.

Is there a time-frame or estimate for the Red Nikon smart mount? i'm going to guess that you'll have several ir not many many months before you see a nikon smart mount....i think latest was the cannon is the firs that will be released, then wasn't there a quote some place that Nikon was going to be a long wait? I'd like to see it NOW....but have not heard even a rumor.....yep, 1k is steep, but no other options out there and the quality of the pro-lok is second to none.....so got to roll with the pluses.....

Yeah, the Red mount release date is an unknown, and I doubt we'll know anything further about it until it hits the store. MAYBE we'll know more when Epic X starts shipping... maybe not.

I don't doubt the quality of the Opti-tek mount, especially since you've tested it and are enthusiastic about it. For me, it's not about that. It's about juggling budgetary matters.

I seem to have cast a pall on this thread... sorry Rick. I'll make amends below.

You can always drill a hole in a body cap for a 5k pinhole camera!

Good idea!

(I wonder if I drilled various sized holes if they would correlate to f/stops? hmmmmm...)

Yes they do, Elsie. Drill a largish hole in a spare camera blank cap, and tape tin foil with a pin hole of about 1/64" to it, the closer to the center the better . The rounder and less burrs the better. If the hole is 1 inch from the sensor, your effective fstop is F64. at 2 inches from sensor: f128. and so on. Pretty dreamy images can be had. ( :

Really? I thought I was being facetious.:arf:

Also consider that, aside from the inherent softness of a pinhole image, there is no depth of field characteristics to contend with, no focussing issues, everything from a fraction of an inch, to infinity, has the same fidelity, and near objects are not prone to optical distortions.
Epic, with its 5k, HDR, and light sensitivity, should make this worth a serious look. Even in blazingly direct sunlight the resulting images can have a beautiful quality to them, often providing pastel colors. You-tube and even largish TV' size images will be simply Elsie da Vinci. Not sure about big screen effect. Large sensors, like large format film, are wonderful for pinhole.
