  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there any bit of compiled info on confirmed camera specs yet? Trying to sift through 131 pages of posts... Differences between Epic W and Weapon Helium?

Also, has anyone asked about being able to record a full frame scaled down R3D off the Helium sensor...this has never been allowed before but with 8k I imagine we are looking at a lot of data. An already scaled and not windowed 6K image out of the Helium might be more manageable for data. Not sure I want to deal with that much data... but I DO want all the improvements of the new sensor. (and I am talking about an R3D file not ProRes)

Jarred killed the 8k downscale r3d idea.. that isnt happening nope.. it defeats the entire purpose of the file format.

your best hope is that it will record full FOV into the 4k prores files

ok- any charts on file sizes/data rates for the 8K format? I know we got some benefit with Weapon Mg and higher compression was looking better (like 8:1 is the new 6:1) kind of thing? Just a little concerned about the huge amount of data that hasn't necessarily been an issue with 6K but its creeping up there...

From Phil Holland's website. I remember reading if exporting down to 4K you can shoot up to 14:1

Epic-W is max 275MB/s

higher compression rates than the Weapon helium similar to compression rates between CF/MG.. I think this is a good way to look at it.. but we wont know for sure of any charts or anything until it comes out tomorrow at 11am pst...

Useful link. Thank you. I usually shoot 5:1 6KHD on Weapon MG. To achieve similar data rates on Helium 8KHD looks like I'd have to be 9:1. Wonder how that would look? Wonder how it would hold up in a wide shot forest exterior? Or for green screen or blue screen work? Tough to make decisions without knowing.

Super long day, and super tired, but can't risk going to sleep prior to midnight ...

Yep, all the official action starts tomorrow, so no orders tonight etc. But Jarred is Jarred, and it will be the 11th in a couple of hours PST.

Given that great big bucket of awesome RED is delivering tomorrow, I think the temptation might just be too great not to let a little something slip tonight.

Going to make some more coffee now. :001_smile:

night owls to the horn.. refreshing to keep the servers warmed up for tomorrow of course

This is the poster I sent to Jarred. It glows in the dark, haha.

Yea hope we can download some footage, I curios to about green/blue screens and high freqvency shots to. On mx i shoot 3:1 for green screen and usally 5:1 (on occation 3:1) in shoots with much small details. Everything else i shoot at 6:1 and I am still a happy camper on mx.

I wonder what visually benifit there is to shoot higher resolution with higher compression if you would finish in 4k. How much more details would I get compaired to 3:1 on epic mx. Im sure you gain alot, just curios...

The best thing about red is the red code where I still get benifit on the progress on redcode on stuff i shot 5 years ago.

He might have got the night off for once.. I mean what is done is done.. tomorrow is happening and nothing will stop it.
