The Update Thread

I guess I don't comment much, but I felt the need to chime in here for some reason. Slogging through the 100+ page rollercoaster got me very excited, but reading some of the commentary left me with a bitter aftertaste. You've got me aching to upgrade no doubt- sadly I may have to sit this one out, yet again, but that is in no way on RED.

Again, though is the keyword here. Another generous upgrade chance I never imagined. Its not for lack of wanting, either. Passing it up is really hard, and for a multitude of reasons- truthfully, I probably still haven't grown enough as a shooter yet to have fully reached the limitations of my "deal-of-a-lifetime" Scarlet-X. I also never really took advantage of renting it out to people because it was my baby! But, regardless of my possibly poor business decisions, the fact that I could have an upgrade path today is mind-boggling, and I'm driving my friends and family crazy as all I can talk about the past few days is doing the financial math to make it possible! XD

Maybe its also because I'm back to working for a vendor again, but I can't believe the amount of flak you guys have caught for this. You guys have totally exceeded your promise to me, for sure. That "deal-of-a-lifetime" truly was that, its been proved over and over. But even if someone didn't get their camera on any special kind of deal, the fact that RED as a vendor is responsive enough and put the effort in to create an entirely new product to satisfy an additional intermediate user tier and to alleviate the backlog on an extremely popular product is testament to how much you guys care about this foolish business.

Between the deals and the financing and the products, you appear to be breaking yourselves incrementing to eliminate almost all barriers to your customers having the ability to move forward. Even if someone has had a terrible year, or 4, and they bought a RED camera and worked it, their old inventory can now be upgraded while retaining a lot of value from their initial investment. Short of not renting their camera out, like I did, RED has taken the hit in their ledgers to make this possible for all of those who were willing to make the initial jump. As an independent business owner, its really hard for me to look at this any other way: you guys do a lot for your customers. Most of that would be unimaginable at another company.

Anyway. You guys are the best kind of insane, just wanted to say thanks for the second (third?) additional opportunity, only sorry I haven't done enough on my end to be able to take it.

(I'm most excited about the new color science approach that has been mentioned. Hopefully that has at least some tiny trickle down benefit for those of us still on MX... but I'm not holding my breath.)

Please stay crazy out there. Can't wait to shoot with one, even if its not ultimately mine!

Very thoughtful post. Jarred and team def treat us like family more than customers.

Does anyone know the data rates for 2K ProRes 4444 and 4K ProRes 422HQ?

I really want 4 cards. Originally with the Scarlet-W, shooting 5K HD @ 23.98 8:1 is 59.56MB/s or 209GB/hr. With a 120GB card that's 34 minutes a card, which is great.

For Epic-W, shooting 7K HD (S35 3 Perf) @ 23.98 10:1 is 93.39MB/s or 328GB/hr. With a 120GB card that's just about 22 minutes a card, still ok.

Part of me says I should get 2x 512GB cards. A lot of stuff I'll be shooting would be ProRes, so 120GB cards would be great. I know the Epic-W bitrate is 275, faster than the 120 cards. I could never see myself shooting 8K @ 5:1 with a data rate of 260MB/s. Lower the compression to 6:1 and now the data rate is 216MB/s - which is ok for the 120GB cards, granted it would be 9 1/2 minutes a card (similar to 1000ft film mag).

Sorry for my word vomit. I'm just trying to figure my math out and appreciate any input.

I got all the numbers from Phil Holland'a website. He has some great tools on there!!

4 is a pretty standard rotation, factoring in time to shoot vs time to download. 2 is too few. 3 is ok for the pace of most shoot days. you wont regret having more once youve paid the bill, you will regret having few every time you run out of cards on the day. I carry 6 personally, two of which are the smallest capacity for carrying over in a pinch, or for firmware/ utility reasons.

Get 2 512GB and thank yourself later...

My only issue with that is download time. Sure I could easily shoot them to 50% and download then. 256GB should be around a 35-40 minute back up. My fear would be 2 cards isn't enough no matter the size. 4x 120GB cards would be 20 minutes to download and I'd be getting about 20 minutes a card, so I won't have to worry about running out of media.

Yeah that's why I want 4. I guess I can always upgrade later. 4x 120GB would be a good start

I have followed this thread quietly from the first post and i must say I'm almost sad to see this insane ride come to it's conclusion. The only thing that lightens my heart is i know the insanity that will come tomorrow and when the cameras get out into the wild and the images start to be shown and the art starts to be made will make all these hours spent on this thread seem so, so worthwhile. We laughed, we cried, we shouted to the Gods on the mountaintop and they answered. Tomorrow we go into the maelstrom with smiles on our faces and the cry on our lips "...'effin RED... they did it again". See you tomorrow ladies and gents.

Right now I have a 120GB and a 240GB and it doesn't make sense to me in my situation to buy anymore 120GB. I need to get at least one more mag... and it will be at least a 240GB

i went for 2 240gbs. With a
Fast drive and usb3 you can keep it rotating, I think. Its risky for sure, an extra "in between" card would be ideal.
yeah, right now I have to plan for a multiple card dumps throughout the day while moving from location to location. And since I need to format a card to shoot on it again...then I also have to make a backup... so it ends up being a lot extra I have to think about during the course of the day. I'm going to get a 3rd card when I can.

you need at least 1 512gb (go 40% on it and dump it) and have 3 120GB for quick fast dumping cards for your DIT (its quick and will help with bottle necking on dumping cards)

I think 4 512 mags is the sweet spot for epic w... we shall see soon enough!

Is there any bit of compiled info on confirmed camera specs yet? Trying to sift through 131 pages of posts... Differences between Epic W and Weapon Helium?

Also, has anyone asked about being able to record a full frame scaled down R3D off the Helium sensor...this has never been allowed before but with 8k I imagine we are looking at a lot of data. An already scaled and not windowed 6K image out of the Helium might be more manageable for data. Not sure I want to deal with that much data... but I DO want all the improvements of the new sensor. (and I am talking about an R3D file not ProRes)
