The Update Thread

You spoke your mind Nick, I don't think you need to apologize. Your contributions to this forum's make you an ace in my and many others' books. I'm sure others share you sentiment but are scared of RED's Wrath. It's impossible to have an upgrade program that benefits everyone equally so there's inevitably going to be collateral damage. Part of RED's job is to handle it if they want to keep doing these upgrades.

Sometimes I just stare at my Epic Dragon and think, "how the fuck did I go from lusting over a RED One years ago to owning this piece of awesome". Epic Dragon for Life #EDFL

Just stepping in one more time to say Im sorry.

I should have chosen my words much more carefully, and certainly made it MUCH clearer how much I truly appreciate/love RED and what they stand for - great cams, and a great community here on RU.

Nick you are good my friend... You didn't do anything wrong.

I should actually be thanking you... you opened my eyes.

I appreciate everything Red has done for me over my career. I also appreciate all that Nick has done for this community as well. Thank you to Nick and Jarred for all of the support and responding to questions to make myself and others better and more efficient at what we do. You are both amazing people and sometimes amazing people can have differences, that is ok, it will all work out in the long run. If you don't get the upgrade now Nick, you have an amazing camera and make amazing images.

I am very happy with my scarlet-w. I probably don't need 8k, but, I will put in the deposit and see what happens from there. Thanks Red crew for pushing the expected.

I may not get to upgrade my Dragon as soon as I would like, but when I do, I will. I will accept any offer that Red has at that time because, it is more than any other company offers, ever. I appreciate everything Red does. They make beautiful instruments that help me capture what I want. For that, I thank you Jarred and Brent and every other Red employee working towards the future.

Man, that's tough stuff. Just like a real family. You gotta be pretty torn up inside. Thanks for the sacrifices, your efforts really are life-changing for many of us.

What a gong show. I wonder how much of Jarred's time is spent on upgrade-related stuff (coming up with paths, pricing, and answering questions). I don't envy that part of your job sir.

At the ire of many in this forum, may I suggest you end this thankless endeavour after the 11th and focus on the fun stuff? All these different RED cameras isn't going to make any future upgrades any easier to deal with. Put that energy into something else. Perhaps arranging a RED sponsored annual REDUser Reunion where we can all meetup somewhere, watch some decent bands, and get drunk.

With all due respect, I'm going to politely disagree... This thread has EXPLODED since this all went down and it has been filled with an ABUNDANCE of people who are "thankful" for this endeavor. There has been a gigantic outpouring of people who are appreciative of where they have been with upgrades and where they are now because of upgrades. I truly believe that everyone that sent Jarred and Brent all of those gifts, cards, absurd bears, stupid shit that means the world because it was a thought, and more important than all of those things, just kind words, are the "majority"of the people that represent this community. Those words and feelings sent by all of those people cant be faked... And it's not just because RED does what they do, but that they care the way they care and listen... I mean... Remember when they just upgraded people to weapon mg because they werent downers? Those people weren't kissing ass.... Those people weren't out there looking for something... They were just "being". They were just saying "man... whatever we get, its another option... lets just be thankful we're all part of this band of rejects together" And to me? Those people are the majority. I'm sure those peoples lives are different today because of it.. I gotta tell you... I've looked for canon forums where people log onto to thank the President, CEO, Owners, etc... and in turn get the same respect by those Presidents, owners, CEO's in return to their customers.... And unless it's only on the dark web... I dont think there is one... If there is... I havent been able to find it... That is why people are here. It's the foundation that Jim started and Jarred and Brent have more than successfully carried the beliefs forward to everyone here today... It's why people are here... And for what it's worth... These people that's lives are different because of the things that Jarred and Brent have done... They're probably gonna disagree with you too.. I'll end it with this... And this is something I try to keep in the back of my head as much as possible... When this game is all over... And we are on that bed thinking about what we've done with this life... all we can do is hope we've touched as many lives as possible.... I PREY I can say I've touched even a fraction as many lives as JArred, BRent and Jim have.... That to me is the most mind boggling part of all of this.... So whether you keep the program or not Jarred... I tip my hat to you my friend... You're a fucking champion for always trying and always fighting for what you believed in whether it was hard or not and you've touched an absurd amount of lives as a result of that... And to me? Thats fucking incredible...

+1 well said

You spoke your mind Nick, I don't think you need to apologize.

Speak for yourself. Nick didn't just speak his mind, he stated that he called all the dragon owners in New York and they all told them that they ALL were mad at RED for not giving them a better deal. Nick did later retract that and say it was just a couple people he talked to, but that is not how he presented it to Jarred. Nick stood up and proclaimed that he was speaking on behalf of everyone which was wrong, so he should of apologized. And he did. So lets move on.

A decade ago in October of 2006 I was incredibly proud to have moved into a newly owned house and was shooting at the time with a fun little camera called the XL2. I can vividly remember the first night I actually stayed in the house enjoying the smell of poly on a refinished wood floor upon which I was sitting, when I ran across weird silver rendering of a camera that could capture in 4K. It was a silver beast with an intimidating red eye that was so beyond anything I had ever seen that I honestly spent hours staring into the void of the lens mount trying to figure out how it would actually be used. At that time I vowed that one day I would own a Red. I became so obsessed that I had re-occurring dreams about giants with Red camera heads haha! At the time it was going to take me years to figure out how to drum up the cash, so I put a pic of a Red render up on the day job computer desktop as a motivation.

Then the announcement of the fixed lens Scarlet came along and the dream started to feel like it might actually become a reality. I remember the old Scarlet dedicated forum where the late night habits started to take hold and 4am posts became normal as well as a permanent window in the work browser ;D

The next huge moment was 5 years ago in November of 2011 with a brand new girlfriend and a few close friends huddling around a three computer screen waiting for the big Scarlet announcement. As soon as it went live we all franticly attempted to log in and stake a claim. I got in right before the crash and had it all lined up with a TI version and then froze as this was such a huge purchase for me. I just couldn't decide on which options so I backed out and then proceeded to flip out as the site went down and it took another several hours to get it all sorted. The next several months were spent obsessively refreshing REDuser and guessing when my number would be up.

Enter the Dragon upgrade in 2012 and another exciting day in front of the computer waiting and hoping to get in early. The girlfriend, soon to be wife, was actually a bit furious as she thought that the upgrade money was for an engagement ring oops! I think it was almost a deal breaker, but love endured and we were married December of 2013.

Red announcements have been some of the most memorable moments in my life. The potential encased in each announcement represented to me pure opportunity to live the dream. This inspired a drive that helped push me outside of my comfort zone, drop the day job a little over a year ago, and finally be able to sustain myself with work that I love. Without the generous upgrade programs and the knowledge that I have learned right here from all of you on the REDuser forum, I'm not sure that I would have been able to take the leap of faith. For that I will forever be thankful and truly believe that the willingness of Jim, Jarred, Brent, and the rest of the Red team to engage has created a unique community that is unequaled in any business.

Exciting times!

We all make good money with the inspiring tools that RED makes. The fact that there's any upgrade path is crazy and we should all be grateful that there's any sort of upgrade at all.

I just made my jump from Epic Dragon to CF Weapon Package this week and I can almost pay for a Scatlet-W with the crazy acccesory credit, almost an entirely new camera, that's wild.

Thanks to the Red crew for any upgrades and keeping them open for so long.

Lol you guys are acting like this is a funeral.

Appreciate all the love and I really enjoy reading the awesome background stories.

I know the majority of you are thankful and it's appreciated.

I'm gonna restore the upgrade option for Epic Dragon owners in an attempt to create balance back in the universe so we can go back to another 100 more pages of whatever the hell we were talking about before this day began.

Music I'm sure to many ears...
