The Update Thread

Hey Jarred, I'm not on the current upgrade path because I jumped from Weapon CF to Helium, but I've benefited from it before with my upgrade from Epic-MX to Dragon and then to Weapon CF. I wanted to say what thousands of us feel- We are so grateful for you, Jim, Brent and everyone at Red for making it the most badass camera company in the world. Not to mention, making the best cameras in the world. I can only imagine how hard you and your staff are working to pull it off. The upgrade path is a major difference between Red and everyone else. It's incredibly generous and makes it that much easier for those on a budget. Thank you for all of your efforts. They may feel unnoticed and under appreciated by a small vocal group on reduser, however it has been my experience that everyone I know and work with is a major supporter of Red. So from that group, thank you. If nothing else, being a Red owner has massively benefited my own career and I would love to give back if there's anything I could ever do for you, for Red, or for this community.

I don't post helluva lot either but I read every page on this thread (and many others) and I'm fascinated by how people's perspectives shift so radically& so quickly.
These are some facts, as I see them:
1. RED changed the game and revolutionized filmmaking and all the negative shit I hear from people on set or other wise, I find laughable (people complaining about upgrade paths, sound guys bitching about some freaking cable they didn't bring :), other cinematographers praising Arri to high heavens etc). I've shot with almost every camera out there from Bolex Arriflex and Panavision to Canon, Alexa, RED, and all the technical aspects will always come second to concept and story. We are a generation of SPOILED filmmakers. We have so many tools and yet there's always somehow room for complaining..
2. The Dragon sensor is AMAZING. Whatever comes out of the gates Oct. 11 will not affect one single frame you shoot on it. Make it count! Not too long ago I was lucky enough to have a conversation with one of the best DP's of our time who comes from film and Alexa and knowing I'm familiar with RED cameras asked for a few pointers (he had a car commercial coming up and was shooting high speed on RED Dragons). Told him my thoughts and I wasn't surprised when he got back to me, after the shoot and was amazed by the results.
3. For camera owners. If you want a seat at the table you have to play the game. Stop bitching, pay attention, the camera game is ever changing, technology moves forward and its as it should be.

Personally, and I'm sure I'm not alone, I fell that I owe a big part of my career to RED for opening up the path to everyone daring enough to walk it. THANK YOU

PS. The monkey experiment Jarred posted is on point!

did you get the milk bar cake?

I'm a Scarlet-W order to be allocated and financially not in a position to embrace the generous gift of the $10K Epic-W deal so will continue to patiently wait but Jeff's hit the nail on the head.
Upgrades are a generous gifts in a world of throw-away tech and must be viewed as so! We're lucky people to be on the Red train!

Unfortunately not, time collision with a bigger commercial project shot with Scarlet-W. I can tell you awesome pictures of this cam...
The project is in post-production now... little sneak-peek (without color-correction/grading only LUT):

That's freaking awesome Sergio, I would love to see this

Oh Nick you notEpic-W cheers!

Really struggled to get to epic dragon - went full upgrade circle - SX to EpicX to Epic Dragon. Never thought I'd ever get a top of the line RED camera though somehow managed to put down the money for an SX brain in 2012 the same year I got married (that was tough!). It's been a massive struggle since then to now but been a good last year so super-excited to be able to just about be able to scrape together enough to get to Epic-W and then this dampener today.

Been watching this thread often but after a crazy busy day at work I leave the thread alone all day & come back to this change in momentum : (

So sad.

How could this clear goodwill have gone awry so quickly! I don't have the patience or WANT to waste time grumbling at Nick and EDtourage (dudes, :dupe:you can always do the S-W route and sell the bloody Epic Dragon used and likely get there for nothing bar some monies for some dsmc2 acc's lols rather than ... Blah blah gift horse in mouth blah whine whine wine - & not the good sort!).:cryin::emote_22_yikes:

It's not bad enough that in the UK we had a second £ crash due to Brexit on Monday now this whine whine etc etc damn doesn't this grumbling malarkey get real boring quick?:nopity::nopity:

But all good, the used 2000hrs+ scarlet mx I just bought & sorted transfer ownership over for still ok for upgrade Jarred of I have to keep my ED?

Still stoked over the initial helium response. T4 2:1 anamorphic 3200iso high DR 8K RAW image acquisition is going to be, well...

:Angel_anim:

Heaven.

8KFF's gonna be great for stills too. You should be calling helium dsmc3!

This, as image-makers, is is what we look forward to: that moment when you previsualise a good thing and then you fire up that cam & lens combo & line up the vision & talent in front of it & then we realise that all these words and silly ramblings are a load of irrelevant hot air & why a lot of industry peeps keep the hell away from this batshit craziness.

Jarred (still can't believe you've pretty much revealed everything about Epic-W thanks!) / Brent & all at RED, don't change. RED is somehow getting better and better year by year, which is not by luck no doubt, but only by all the hard work done by all the people at the company.

Kudos RED, regardless of the noise. Back to good vibe wave-riding. :bath:

PS sorry about the drunk emogees.

I'm wondering if this whole debacle has lumped all DSMC1 camera owners (Red One M/MX, SCARLET-X, Epic-X) owners with the Epic-Dragon would-be upgraders. If so, what transpired earlier today really hurt that group the most... Sigh

A few things.....

First, as Jarred said, Nick is a very cool guy. I've hung out with him and he loves RED. He was expressing some thoughts. I don't consider Nick to be entitled, not the type of person Jarred is talking about.

When you put in long hours, push you and your staff to the limits and things don't go as planned - well, that creates a lot of frustration. I think we are seeing Jarred and the RED team trying to keep as many people happy, knowing that it's impossible to do that and getting worn out in the process. I think what you are seeing is Jarred's unorthodox style of business sometimes biting him in the ass. I mean seriously, who would expect the RED ONE MX to have any upgrade path at this point? Yet there it is, no camera left behind. Actually, it makes sense to get people over to DSMC2 to free up resources that might still be supporting those older cameras. But either way, it's not something you see too often. I suppose sometimes this creates an environment where people do start to feel entitled, and I see this with other forums where the expectation is more features for less money. But Nick is not one of those people, so for anyone who doesn't know him, I feel confident vouching for him.

I thought the RED ONE to RED MX upgrade was a nice way to thank the early adopters. The RED ONE to Epic upgrade was generous too. Beyond that, I really don't feel entitled to much more. Many people's cameras were paid off, or made plenty enough to cover these upgrades. So it was a win win for everyone. Obviously things have expanded quite a bit with all the other cameras in the lineup and it's a bit more complex than those early upgrade paths.

If I were Jarred, I probably would have cut the entire upgrade process somewhere along the line. Make new cameras, sell the inventory at full retail (whatever number makes sense to make profit). The upgrade process creates headaches for RED. But Jarred is one of you. I'm sure he would want the opportunity to upgrade and keep up with the tech without buying a new camera every time. So, he offers these deals. Again, it's not perfect and he's not going to make everyone happy. But it has to be tiring to a certain extent. And yet, they still do it.

This is a passionate forum to say the least. But, at the end of the day I recommend everyone looks at what RED is offering, assesses whether it makes sense to go in one direction or another and hopefully in the end, RED is able to continue to refine their methods, continue to improve supply and demand chains, and everyone who chooses to shoot on REDs are happy with that decision. I give both sides credit. It takes patience from everyone involved. Fortunately there is a forum for working this stuff out.

Maybe this is a good time to look back over the ten years RED has been doing this. Perspective is important.

I feel compelled to also share my .02 here ... which in this case, happens to be nothing but undying appreciation for everything RED stands for and does for its customer base.

I became a member of the RED family in 2013. Buying an Epic-MX was 100% the scariest purchase I've ever made in my life as a sole proprietor. 3 years later, it's now the purchase I will never regret. Owning that camera, which is now a DSMC1 Dragon, changed the entire landscape of my business -- everything from how clients viewed me to how efficient I became at delivering a quality end product.

I'm completely spoiled now. I shoot ... well, basically everything on RED. Even projects for which 4K/6K is overkill because I love the workflow. This ecosystem is just unmatched. Jarred and his team here are fostering a community that defies all expectations. Other camera manufacturers -- sure, they think it's cool when you give them money and they'll share your BTS photos on their Instagram feed. But the masterminds at RED have this unbridled sense of passion for filmmaking. And they genuinely love providing us all with the tools to do great things.

I'm nothing but proud to be part of this family, and I hope to continue the journey on Oct 11 and move into DSMC2, however I can.

I met Nick at NAB this year, and he really is a stand up guy. There are some passionate people in this forum so there's bound to be some friction and sparks. That said, I would still want Nick in my RED corner. I hope it gets all ironed out. The people of Reduser are a big family and we're going to piss off Dad sometimes. We makeup and the bonds get stronger.
