The Update Thread

Long time Scarlet mx owner. Was going to upgrade to scarlet-w soon(with 6 months) but these epic w sort of announced plans are intruiging. Should I just hold tight till Oct 11? Or worth putting a deposit on scarlet-w? Im not to keen on putting any money down without clear info but also want to get best deal possible.

Seems to me that putting $1K down as a deposit on Scarlet-W keeps your options open. You can always cancel it and get your money back. Meanwhile, you are in the queue for possible "deals."

You are not too far away from where I am - I have a Scarlet Dragon and liked the idea of a Scarlet-W eventually but wasn't in a hurry to spend the money. But when opportunity knocks... So, I am going to do a Scarlet-W deposit before 10/11, then I'll wait to see what the Epic-W plans look like and go from there. I can cancel and sit tight, take delivery on a Scarlet-W and maybe sell my Dragon (or not), or jump to Epic-W. Options! Like options. :-)

You don't sound like a party-pooper at all... at least not to me.. and you have some good questions.

First.. yes of course... we are shipping out Scarlet-Ws every day.... that hasn't slowed down, it's sped up, you will see on social media and here people getting their Scarlet-Ws (and Ravens) every day.

Don't have a photo of a bazillion Scarlet-Ws sitting and waiting for delivery because we ship every one that goes out the door as soon as it's made and gone through testing, there is no stockpile.

But you can look at that photo of all the Epic-W's ( which has grown tremendously since I posted that ) and pretend they are Scarlet-Ws in a way, since remember that is the whole point of this program. People that are waiting for their cameras get first priority on those Epic-Ws, so every camera that gets switched and take from that stockpile basically moves you staying with Scarlet-W one camera forward down the list.

And since both lines are separate.. the Epic-W and Scarlet-Ws.. and both are producing cameras, we will be cutting through that backlog at record pace. And even when we blow through all those Epic-Ws we have ready... ( I would not be surprised if it was the first day) , The machine is strong... So there will be reinforcements coming in on a daily basis to keep attacking away the list.

FROM THE MAN HIMSELF!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! So so much appreciated. I will SHUT UP NOW and wait eagerly for my allocation and share in the joy of the excitement of the Epic-W release.

Just because I can't share that joy directly....at this point in time, I will be happy for the others, happy for my Scarlet-W, and happy that I am a customer of the BEST CAMERA COMPANY in the world.

Thank you RED!!!

FWIW, giving the Epic-W 4K/UHD ProRes scaled from 7K or 8K in camera should be very popular for a lot of shows. As others have noted, the phrase 8K post causes panic for a lot of producers/post supes. While some entities may still mandate maximum capture rasters at 4KHD, most will accept 4K/UHD ProRes (scaled from an S35-ish FOV) written on the fly in camera. While I, and many of you, will lament the loss of custom "developing" the RAW into an RGB format - most producers will embrace the workflow shortcut of getting directly to ProRes or DNxHR.

For a lot of folks the Scarlet-W will provide amazing bang for the buck, but if getting your camera booked onto lots of productions is part of your plan, then, IMO, the Epic-W is the droid you're looking for.

We're in the same boat, thinking about doing the same, just to don't miss an possible option. This thread is f***ing awesome. Feels a lot like the early days, probably even better.

Thanks, as always, Blair, for your professional insight. It tends to sooth an anxious soul.

The same guy literally made three trips to our office yesterday.
Looks like mine will be delivered Monday, just in time for the anniversary celebration…it's not vegetation…but it is something made from fruit...

har har. did my little red trees make it to your desk yet?

OK, not kidding. Apparently, some of the deliveries today are too big to be accepted by our front desk receptionist so they have to be dropped off at shipping and receiving. So, uhm, yeah....

New Helium Footage

New Helium Footage

Hey guys, just wanted to let you guys know that pretty soon there will be some new Helium footage to see. Friend of mine did a high end real estate shoot with it a few days ago and sent me a 1 minute of footage... I shoot real estate often and it was good to see what the helium would do in that situation... The results are mind-blowing... Truly stunning.. Makes this decision so easy for me to upgrade to EPIC W... just gotta convince the wife! lol The video will be launched very soon, when it is I will share it with you all. The scarlet W is great... the Helium is astonishing! lol

Just wanted to remind everyone how awesome this Helium sensor really is!

:001_tt1:Sent some love potion your way. I wonder how many deliveries you'll get today.

I am so proud of all you that helped me give Brent a special day. I won't forget. Thank you.

My lingering questions... though I admit, the answers are not needed as the decision to got Epic-W has been made...
- Can the Epic-W do 8K 24 FPS to Redcode RAW 9:1 simultaneous with scaled 4K 24FPS to ProRes... setting my expectations low, I would think not but that would be too cool if it did.
- What is the first K (7K, 6K) that can capture 48FPS?
- What is the first K (6K, 5K, 4K) that can capture 96FPS?
Maybe some time in the next 11 days we will know.
