If EPIC W won't should at 8K for film meaning 24-30 fps, I'm sure for $5K more, people would rather go straight up for Helium Weapon. I doubt Epic W will only shoot at 8K for stills... the money gap would be too cheap vs the specs gap for shooters...

My 2 cents prediction.
Remember the "real" price difference is 20k. WH is $49k vs EW at $29. Jarred has said repeatedly that this upgrade doesn't make mathematical sense. Its more a jackpot call.

Depends who you are ( camera wise ) If you are a DSMC2 customer ( Scarlet-W, Weapon MG, Weapon Carbon ) and you are doing a Helium upgrade its going to be a much faster process because of the mechanicals.

That said, There always will be periods of insanity that things stack up.

But this launch will be very different than our past launches.

This time... We aren't fucking around.

All Epic-Ws.

Now I know how it looks in heaven :)

Jarred? If I change my order from Raven to Scarlet-W can I upgade it to Epic-W later than from October 11 do December 31st? Will this upgrade path last longer than this year? Thank you

Ok. Weapon is Helium. Epic is Helium and I guess Scarlet will be Helium as well :) Scarlet-W 6K Helium @ 60fps? :) And then Weapon VV Helium 10K? :)

That's a double big jump you sure you want to do that? If it's a big financial stretch for you you might want to just go Raven to Scarlet-W first and see if that's enough camera for you . The scarlet-w to epic-w option won't last that long, and definitely not into next year.

Thank you for your fast response.
I guess I'll go from Raven to Scarlet-W through my dealer here in Czech Republic. I won't have money to go from Raven to Scarlet and then to Epic in three months for sure that's why I ask.
I guess Scarlet-W will have another great upgrade paths in the future :)
You guys doing fantastic job and I've never ever met company with such an amazing customer service.

Wouldn't surprise me if Oct 11 includes a classic Jobs-esque 'and there's one more thing'...
Maybe something new on the VV front given their difficulties with cooking that sensor. Maybe something based on Helium pixel density but larger than S35?

What is likely to happen...:

Dragon tiers:
T1: Weapon VV 8K - 60 fps @ 8K in FF35
T2: Weapon CF 6K - 75 fps @ 6K
T3: Scarlet W 5K - 50 fps @ 5K
T4: Raven 4.5K - 120 fps @ 4.5K (really a specialty gimbal cam)

Helium tiers:
T1: Weapon H 8K - 60 fps @ 8K in S35
T2: Epic W - 30 fps @ 8K (to cover "normal" speeds for PAL/NTSC/CINE)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Make the Epic any faster and there is not enough separation from the more expensive Weapon H 8K. Make it any slower and it makes no sense as 8K camera, besides of timelapses and stills - just like the 5K 15 fps of the good old Scarlet MX...
What I do agree on is the confusing "W" moniker for the Epic (and Scarlet while we are at it), given that Weapon is a model name - not a body shape - which is DSMC2.
Then there is already the confusing "W" and "VV" (Weapon vs VistaVision). "W" should really be a name for the DSMC2 Dragon cameras. Period.
The Epic should really be named as "Epic H" and the VistaVision camera should also be renamed.
Then we would have the following lineup:
W (Dragon DSMC2) tiers:
T1: VistaVision W 8K - 8K @ 60 fps in FF35 (this should really be Weapon W)
T2: Weapon W 6K - 6K @ 75 fps (this should really be Epic W)
T3: Scarlet W 5K - 5K @ 50 fps
Specialty entry cam with fixed Canon mount
S1: Raven 4.5K - 120 fps @ 4.5K (really a specialty gimbal cam with fixed Canon mount)
H (Helium DSMC2) tiers:
T1: Weapon H - 8K @ 60 fps in S35
T2: Epic H - 8K @ 30 fps in S35
This makes even more sense as the inevitable DSMC3 comes in 2020 - which will have Helium options according to RED's "Body -> Sensor -> Body -> Sensor" update cycle...
I know it is too late for this, given how many of the Epic-W's have been engraved already - altho the "Epic-W" SSD modules could be sent for swapping to current Weapon MG owners... ;o)
I just agree that the line up is getting really confusing for anyone but us - experienced RED users...
:sifone: Peter
Edit: The "dream" Helium lineup should/could end up being:
H (Helium DSMC2) tiers:
T1: Weapon H - 8K @ 120 fps in S35 (given that NHK needs 8K @ 120 fps for the new SHV standard)
T2: Epic H - 8K @ 60 fps in S35
T3: Scarlet H - 8K @ 30 fps in S35
But that will mess up everything in terms of pricing / upgrades and logistic at RED HQ... :reddevil:
The "W" stands for "Weapon"
even on the underside of the Scarlet-W it is laser etched: "Scarlet Weapon"
Most of us know that and I have mentioned this clearly in my post:
"What I do agree on is the confusing "W" moniker for the Epic (and Scarlet while we are at it), given that Weapon is a model name - not a body shape - which is DSMC2."
But that would make Weapon W a "Weapon Weapon". In Weapon (8k) case the W is actually VV - which stands for Vista Vision.
More importantly you will have Scarlet-W and Epic-W - but they have different sensors - Dragon and Helium respectively...
Again - just to be clear - I know none of that will end up happening (with the exception of the orange stuff - which is exactly what I and many others believe will happen)
I was just pointing out that people outside our "inner circles" are really getting confused.
To the point that some are now making jokes about the naming mess...
Literarily today I had yet another question from a client whether my camera is "Epic or Dragon"...
Heck - even many members here are getting confused.
This mess is a result of RED's generosity and their unusual approach to running their business.
Their unheard-of upgrade deals and taking care of the "family" is truly awe-inspiring.
But I can only imagine the logistical nightmare this brings in.
And do not kid yourself if you think this does not hurt RED's bottom line.
Simplifying / Clarifying the naming structure would definitely cost a lot - but IMHO they will recoup this quickly from the savings in logistics and operations...
Never mind the clarity for their customers and their customer's customers... ;o)
I know it will be painful - but this might be as good of a opportunity as any to clear the naming structure once and for all.
The longer RED waits to do this - the messier it will become and the more difficult it would be to fix it.
Just my 2 yen...
I agree. WEAPON DRAGON, Series 1, 2,... etc.
WEAPON HELIUM, Series 1, 2,... etc.
(Future) WEAPON XCaliber 1, 2,... etc.
(observation: interesting how the name Weapon has been less of a problem as first feared by many.)
Has anybody got video of hit hysterically joyouse over options from Red, after he finally gives up on his Canon?
