The Update Thread

Darn, I'm April 16 2016 17:26 and no allocation on the side handle. I bet it's soon though. More focused on the camera at the moment.

That's really strange, my timestamp for the SideHandle is April 17, 2016 15:38 and it just shipped out today. I didn't receive an allocation notice, just got shipped right away.

I don't get this, if my timestamp is 18.57 why are 20.44 geting allocated first ?

Well it dosen't get me much confidence to get the order to upgrade to epic-w, don't get me wrong but in camera queue time it could mean months of difference with such a diference in timestamp.

That is my fear as well... Even if it means a discount, I'm not sure I want to wait another 10 months. I placed order Day One (12/10) and the announced ship date was end of March. It's now six months after that. It almost feels like if I upgrade, there could be many months of questioning if I should have just gotten the Scarlet-W instead of upgrading.

I still have my Scarlet MX and I love it, but man I've been dying for the upgrade for a long time. Tough choices.

This is just conjecture. But. The higher price point, the more available helium sensor and all that that entails likely means you won't have to wait ten months. And if you had a scarlet-w order in, you will get to jump the line like the Raven guys did. The difference here is enough cash wise (even with the incredible discount) to keep a lot of scarlet-w guys right where they are.

I have not heard from RED on my side handle order but just checked and the card used for the order was charged. I expect to hear about shipping soon I guess. Timestamp is 19:00.
I'm so excited to get this on my Raven.

So will we get 11th October all three cameras at the same day? VV Weapon 8k, the Epic-W and the Weapon 8k s35? Or 11th October only Epic-W?

If you are shooting on Epic-W - AND - you have a contracted UHD/4K deliverable - AND - you need to shoot 7K or 8K to get S35-ish FOV, then you may need to upgrade your post workflow tools. For better or worse, most projects still finish at 1080/2K, so scaled ProRes/DNxHD files should give you an solid option that avoids dealing with 8K. If your need for UHD/4K media is only occasional, then you could potentially run your 8K files through RCX-Pro to create UHD/4K "masters" in log format as hero media. You could farm that task out, or hire a well equipped DIT to do the initial flip for you or just make the time needed to do it yourself part of the plan going in.

If delivering UHD/4K media on deadline is part of your world, then you may want to get a Carbon Weapon or build out a shredder computer system able to crush 8K material - or both ;-).

Cheers - #19

Would be great if you could create a 4K R3D version in RCX-Pro, otherwise you'd lose the raw capabilities...

I think my favorite part about RED and why I'm still waiting for a Scarlet-W or possibly now an Epic-W is the communication from the top of the company and them sharing their journey with us. They seem interested in what their core market thinks and wants. You'll always have a few salty users no matter what you do but in the end it builds trust and a better product. Try getting information like that with Canon or Arri.

This is me in a nutshell. I'd love to try and swing the Epic-W, but it'll sit outside my price point. Super stoked on the S-W and excited for both Epic-W upgraders to get their cameras...and the effect it'll have on the Dragon line :)

Just curious...

We've had Dragon sensors for what... like 3-4 years now? Why are we suddenly having supply issues? Not complaining, just curious.
Or is it because Dragon is going inside a DSMC2 body that's making it difficult? Or is it because so many people jumped all over Scarlet-W the demand just overwhelmed the supply?

**SIDE NOTE**
I personally think it would be awesome if, in a few months, the Raven guys could upgrade their 4.5K chip to 5K. And Scarlet-W guys could "unlock" the full 6K sensor since Epic is going 8K.
These are the things I think about when I use the restroom at 3:30 in the morning. :)

When you create new models that attract a broader market that increases the demand of the technology in the matter of amplitudes this can happen. Which is exactly what has occurred.

As for your 2nd point, you'd need new hardware in both of those cases.

Right now I'm on the fence as to whether I'll jump on the Epic-W upgrade or stick with the Scarlet-W. A lot of it will depend on the Epic's ability to shoot slow-mo (48/60) without cropping. I've gotta have that, and we won't know until the specs are released.

My question is, in what ways is the Helium better than Dragon? I've heard it's "clean, beautiful, a 15 out of 10" and so on, but tangibly, what does that mean? For example, is it substantially better in low-light? Other improvements? I'd love to hear from people that have used it (Phil?) rather than speculation from others. Basically, we know it's "better." but how in what ways, specifically?

When the announcement comes, will I be able to keep my place in line with the Scarlet-W if I take the upgrade offer? My biggest fear is getting into a situation where I am stuck in another waitlist & I’d almost rather have a camera sooner rather than later (12/31 timestamp). This is my first RED camera, so I’m eager to get familiar with the RAW workflow, make sure my computer can handle the files, etc. Really looking forward to it!

Makes sense. I didn't think about the whole new amount of people joining the RED family.
I didn't realize you need new hardware. But alas we dream.
Thanks for the insight, Phil. As always you are a endless source of valuable information here. :)
