  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

Am I the only one to have problem with the 8k in the S35mm format?
Would have loved to have a 6k Helium in s35mm... Quite excited to see the new Helium color science.

That's how I am kinda feeling. Not sure I really want THAT much more data to deal with and don't really want to crop in to shoot 5k either because I lose my wider FOV. But I am waiting to see the announcement before I really decide anything.

We always push to the edge of "comfort" for the sake of getting the absolute best image possible. 8K is important. And not just for the blatant resolution.. you discover that after you shoot 8k even if you plan on a 4k or (even more so) a 2k finish. There is something magical that happens with that direct 1:1 or 2:1 or 4:1 pixel oversampling.

But.. if it makes you uncomfortable.. you can always stay with Dragon in the same form factor. It's all about choices and I think we give you the options.

Can't wait to see more Helium content. Would it ever be possible in the near-to-distant future for the Helium sensor to find its way into the little Raven?

Ive been shooting a month-long documentary-style project on Helium and the producers required that we shoot only 2K prores. They said it was because we are constantly on the move and editing on the fly. They needed small files and immediate editorial turnaround from a laptop in the field.
Obviously this was heartbreaking for me (not to shoot Raw) and I fought back tooth and nail. In the end, I had to give them what they are paying for. That being said, I have been absolutely blown away by the quality of just 1080P prores coming out of the helium. The editor, someone who has seen it all, pulled me aside to say he was totally blown away by the quality too. It's just incredible. If Dragon is a 10/10 then Helium would be a 15/10 IMO.

of course it is. :)

I have been suspecting this from the beginning. Even though @Brent has his JarRED Radar on we have gotten enough detail to imagine that Epic-W was destined to be S35 8K, but with a limited data rate maybe?

This topic is becoming full of great news. Thank you Jarred and team for working hard and pushing the limits with every new product and on top of it still offering upgrades for literally everyone.
Sorry if this has already been answered, but is there a threshold date for those who bought the Scarlet-W to get the Epic-W update? Like only those who ordered before X date?
Say if ordered one this coming week would it be eligible for this upgrade?
I only ask this because I'm honestly on the fence about with camera to buy. Last year the Scarlet-W was going to definitely be the camera that I was going to get but had to used some of the money saved for unexpected things and only now I was able to recoup the money for one. But now there's also the Varicam LT that has a pleasing image and I can't honestly decide between the two (both have its pros and cons imo). But if pre ordering one now would make me eligible for the Epic-W that would seal the deal for me (for the epic-w). And I don't mind waiting since IMO Helium is a real game changer (resolution/color/noise/iq).
Well, Thanks again! Cheers.

With DSMC2 we separated the pixel specific low pass bits from the changeable OLPF and put them on the sensor glass for this very reason, so you can use existing OLPFs with Helium sensors without having pixel pitch errors.

Helium is incredibly more accurate in terms of color and has a much, much finer "starting point". The color variations you may be seeing are because everyone is actually using Dragon color science on the Helium right now, which amazingly still looks incredible which is a testament to just how much work Graeme and the Sensor team have worked together to create something really phenomenal. Again the power of REDCODE.

I can't wait till you all see the new Helium color science.

Amazing. I can't wait to see that.

of course it is. :)

Jarred, this is great news for many, and I always love how RED is pushing forward, but for those of us who put down serious cash (I would not have bought Carbon) for 8k many months ago and still have no 8k and now many are going to only have spend 20K total and have 8k, its a hard pill to swallow. I know that we don't know all the details, and I am sure it will all be made cool, but as it stands right now, its not a good feeling in the gut.
