  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

I actually kind of meant that I'm not sure how to interpret Jarred's mention of simplifying the camera lineup. I assumed it meant that they wouldn't be offering so many different cameras (Raven, Scarlet-W, Mg Weapon, CF Weapon, VV Weapon, S35 Helium), so does that mean some cameras will be changing or going away? But then again, it could just mean that they are going to clarify and maybe separate Helium cameras from Dragon cameras.

By the time October rolls around, some guys will have had 6 months with their Scarlet-Ws... I guess I was just hoping to get in early on one of the tick-tock cycles and I'm not sure if the "tick" is about to become a "tock" in October. (Tocktober? sorry, I'll stop!)

Don't forget, RED also makes the Epix-M, Epic-M Monochrome, Epic-X, and Scarlet. Maybe some of those are going away as well?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Red planned on discontinuing the entire DSMC1 line in the near future, and focusing on DSMC2 for the next few years, especially since they're planning on having the DSMC2 last into 2020.

Where does the 2020 date come from? Is that a Red statement or speculation?

Well that's just a fun post to look back on looking back on the last few weeks/months...

What really would be interesting to know is where the epic-w will be positioned in the lineup compared to weapon MG and if the upgrade price from epic dragon will be higher or below the current epic to weapon MG option as I really would like to stay in the game and get to dsmc2 system soon.
I did not do the upgrade from epic dragon to weapon yet as I did two upgrades last year before NAB coming from scarlet-X and I'm still working on getting these investments back.
I still think about if the jump from scarlet Dragon to epic dragon was the right choice for me als the scarlet dragon to scarlet-w deal was a very cool offer and for most of my productions the scarlet-w would have been o.k.
Maybe we can hope to a similar upgrade path going from epic dragon to epic-w, we'll see.
Besides that I am actually very happy with the epic dragon and maybe it's the right choice for me to stay with this camera and sell it at some point.
A little hint about the upgrade path from epic dragon to epic-w before the epic dragon to weapon deal ends would be very nice deciding where to go next.

Maybe there will be one epic, one weapon, and one svaket raven, but a choice of sensirs to put in them, maybe even choice of brains. And there will be one or two new cameras, one or two very small. One the modular phone, where the modules can be reconfigured for POV and drone work.

My take on the new lineup coming this October is this:
DSMC1 goes away.
Weapon MG/Carbon gets 8k Helium, no more Dragon. Only 1 version of Carbon. Current Weapon owners get to upgrade to Helium. Also Weapon MG Helium 8k monochrome.
Epic-W comes with a true S35 cut of the Helium at ~6.8k and priced between weapon Mg and Scarlet-w at around $19k (or $15k for world domination). Here Epix-MX/Dragon get upgrade paths.
Dragon stays with Raven and Scarlet-W.

I know this is all purely speculation, but yeah this is kind of a scenario that I'm a little concerned about. If there was something (price-wise and feature-wise) between Scarlet-W and Mg Weapon, I have a feeling I'd want to jump to that over the Scarlet. But it sounds like I might get my Scarlet a month before this October stuff happens. Let's see what little nuggets of inside info Jarred decides to tease next... :)

It seems like the main difference between the Scarlet-W and the Weapon MG is the sensor size, so it's hard to imagine something in between. The carbon Weapon bodies have significantly higher levels of computing power, so my guess is that the upgrade path from Scarlet-W to Helium would require upgrading the electronics package as well as the sensor. Without the additional computing power, a Helium in a scarlet would be a stils camera that can capture small cropped video footage also, rather than a cinema camera.

Besides, Panavision is planning on releasing the Millenium DXL next year... with a Dragon sensor.

one of the reasons i really like the raven is that at 4k its almost s35, and 99 percent of my productions for tv and commercials wont let me shoot above 4k.
i wish there was a camera that was exactly s35 at 4k, then went up in size and quality from there.
is there and im missing something? but it seems like 4k on every other camera is bigger then s35.

and on the 8k helium, now that people have it, can you choose to have a 4k in camera downscale to 4k, in prores at least?
sort of like the 4k-2k down scale that is going on?

The Varicam lt is exactly S35 @4k, 24.6 x 13mm (with a 26.3 x 13.4mm display look-around).

Helium's first sensor is the 8K s35 build on a completely new sensor line and will be available to Weapon customers in the coming months. (Or the coming weeks for those that know where to look)

Jarred, first of all, best camera company out there for offering the upgrade paths alone. Its a game changer. Our shop loves the camera, but we have no need for 8k resolution at it puts stress on our hardware etc etc etc. The 6k res is prefect for us, however, I want to know if there will be an upgrade to another 6k sensor with the new better pixels? New data rates etc.

Is Helium (in all of its possible variations in size) the only sensor planned for DSMC2?

"body -> sensor -> body -> sensor" pattern has been: R1 (M, MX), DSMC1 (MX, Dragon), DSMC2 (Dragon, Helium)

In other words, will there be another sensor with different specs from Helium (dynamic range, color science, etc) for the DSMC2 bodies? Or is Helium the future until there's a new body?

What would Helium DNA be? And why did Jarreds latest post just get taken down?!?!?! To many beans spilled??? :)
So many questions...
